Bobal Posted October 16, 2006 #1 Share Posted October 16, 2006 About to embark on Eastern Caribbean cruise in 5 days time :D This is a suprise birthday gift so not much time to find out information. I'll be travelling with DH and 2 DS (13 and 15). I understand that Carnival are not 'formal' ships but we enjoy dressing up - will DH be out of place in a tux (will other guests tend to wear suits) and have persuaded DSs that they need to take 'smart' trousers, but will they need to wear a tie?
jmo1 Posted October 16, 2006 #2 Share Posted October 16, 2006 The vast majority of people on Carnival these days wear suits on formal night. I don't recall seeing anyone wearing a tux. Carnival tries to uphold a standard of requiring at least a tie, but you can get by without one with a frown from the maitre d'. I saw several people wearing nice shorts on casual nights, event though the Carnival literature says, "no shorts allowed in the formal dining rooms at dinner time." westernmom Posted October 16, 2006 #3 Share Posted October 16, 2006 We saw a good mix of tuxes and dark suits at formal nights. More suits though. Men in tuxes did not look out of place at all. I would think the sons should wear ties especially where you dh is dressing in a tux. They can never go wrong wearing a tie. It will look nicer in your "formal" photos also. Good luck and have fun. We loved the eastern and the Triumph and I wouldn't have cared if we would have booked the exact same cruise again! I only wish we were leaving sooner! If you enjoy dressing up, then dress up -- even if you look a bit dressier than many of the other passengers, you certainly won't look overdressed or feel out of place. rvrgirl Posted October 16, 2006 #5 Share Posted October 16, 2006 Carnival tries to uphold a standard of requiring at least a tie, but you can get by without one with a frown from the maitre d'. You won't get a frown from the maitre d' if you don't wear a tie. There are some tux shirts and shirts that you wear with a suit that don't require a tie. The guys in our group wear them....no problem. And they look sharp.
Upandadam Posted October 16, 2006 #6 Share Posted October 16, 2006 Generally speaking "Formal" for men means, "Tuxedo". My experience on Carnival is that over half of the men will wear suits with ties, but no one will be out of place wearing a tuxedo. They will just be among the nicest dressed and those living up to the spirit of the evening. The boys should probably wear ties and even a sport coat if they can, but ties will be fine. There will be those who may wear slacks and a nice shirt, but let's face it, that's not quite formal and if anyone's out of place on formal night, they are. Have fun! Traveler353 Posted October 16, 2006 #8 Share Posted October 16, 2006 Wear what ever you wish. It is your vacation. You will see every combination that someone can come up with. The best that I have seen was a group of frat brothers wearing Zuit(sp) suits. Complete from head to toe. Have fun and be comfortable.
