Formal Night - do you go or pass?

Recommended Posts

Just wondering how many people actually go to formal nights............and what others do if they don't go to the main dining room. I'm asking, because on the boards I see many folks pass on formal night, just because they don't seem to want to bring the extra clothing along.

What's your preference, and why.

Our upcoming cruise will have 2 formal nights. My DH-to-be doesn't like to dress up, so as a compromise, I am going all out (formal gown) and dragging him along to the first one, then we will probably do Johnny Rockets or room service for the second one.

This will be our honeymoon, tho, so probably room service. :D

I'm still planning on going to the dining room during formal night. Partly b/c I want to get dressed up and having pictures taken with my mom so she can have that picture she's always wanted ;) Besides, it's fun to see other ppl get all decked out although I don't go for a formal dress or anything. Just a nice skirt or reg. dress b/c so few actually get "decked out" to the full so no need to be the one everyone else is staring at ! :)

I usually go to all the formal nights....I didn't go to one on my May Conquest cruise because one of my formal dresses was ruined (snagged) and I didn't want to wear the first nights dress again. The first one is when they usually have the lobster/prime rib - so if you are going to skip, skip the second :) Have fun!

Go. Unless dressing up for you is torture, such as pulling your fingernails out one by one, GO. It is fun. How often in this day and age do we get to dress up anymore? It is great to see everyone looking great and smelling sweet. Plus, you'll get to have your picture taken looking all great. I would never forgo eating in the dining room just so I could have an emptier suitcase. Also, I have seen some empty spots in the dining room on formal night, but it certainly hasn't been the majority by any means. You'll see hundreds and hundreds of dressed up people.

We love getting dressed up for formal nights. We dress business casual every day for work, and it is nice to see each other really spiffed up. It also adds to the more refined and festive feeling in the dining room on those evenings. On the odd occasion when either of us has not dressed up on formal night, we usually dine in the Windjammer.

Love it! We have to bring a suit bag anyway in addition to the rest of our luggage even for dress pants because we dont want them wrinkled and ruined by being stuffed in a suitcase, so adding in a dinner jacket for the men and a dress for yourself isnt a big deal. Now those that dont like to dress up is one thing, but the excuse of not wanting to bring extra stuff doenst really hold water. While we do go out to eat alot at home, we dont often go to fancy restaurants, so I find it a lovely treat to get dressed up and spend the evening out in your best clothing :)

We too also like to dress for formal nights....

DH actually took not only his black tux but his white dinner tux jacket too for the second night.... usually have a couple of formal events we attend each year here locally so he has his own tux.... (great website - www.uniformalwearhouse.com )

I usually wear dressy cocktail -sometimes long dresses.... but they don't take up a lot of room in suitcase..... LESS THAN JEANS !!!! lol

DH and I do both formal nights- On the cruise with the kids we also had them dress for both nights. Boy, that was stressful getting everybody ready, but it was worth it. I now have three large canvas pictures framed in my office one of the whole family, one of the kids and one with DH and me.

Everyday I look at the slight sunburn on their little noses and cheeks and remember our great cruise.

Well, it's 50/50 for me. If I'm cruising just with DH we pass on formal nights. Neither of us likes to dress up, we hate having our picture taken, and I don't eat lobster. If I am doing a chick cruise or we are cruising with friends, we will do it. I just hate packing the clothes and even worse, the shoes.

The only formal night I ever missed was on the Carnival Glory last October, and that was only because I was seasick. Tried to drag myself out of bed...just couldnt do it. :(

I plan on dressing for both formal nights on the Mariner on 10/29/06. DH has his own tux too, so he will dress too! We hardly get to dress up anymore, so cruising is the chance we get to do it! :)

We have always dressed up, but have now seen just how nice the Windjammer is during dinner. Very quiet and not crowded. We never would have known had we not had to feel our kids before we went to late seating dinner. I am now rethinking the next cruise. Maybe no garment bag will be needed;)

Just like a previous poster said, if nothing else, dress up at least one night so you can have your picture taken. Trust me, you will cherish the photo and be glad that you had it taken.

That is another reason that we are going to the first formal night. We don't get to dress up very often, and I'd like to have that picture of us all dressed up on our honeymoon. What a great memory to think of every time I look at the picture! :)

I think most of the female posters here will say they LOVE formal nights and most male posters will say they DON'T ... but to avoid conflict the men will go along with it to appease their mates :D

Not necessarily true...my husband loves when we can go formal...on a cruise or at home. He looks wonderful in a tux (and knows it) and just purchased a new tux to replace one that has seen many a fun cruise! He also loves shopping with me for my formal...well....maybe doesn't LOVE it, but he has great taste and always helps me choose dresses that are beautiful. The way I see this debate is...if you want to dine in the formal dining room on any given night..you follow the dress code. Most, of not all, cruise ships offer an alternative that will feed you well, if you choose informal. It shouldn't be such a heated subject.

Hi all

Well, the first time on Mariner I was very sceptical about how many would dress formally. However, I was glad we did as most people seemed to go out of their way to dress up!

The second formal night was my partner's 40th so a perfect excuse to dress up to do justice to the bottle of Veuve Clicquot delivered to the table at dinner and shared with our tablemates.

Looked forward to it on Navigator and will again on Freedom in 5 days time! Those formal portraits make great gifts for parents.

As we travel from the UK we hire the Tux from www.cruiselineformal.com, so easy and stops us having to carry extra baggage.

We enjoy all the formal nights. This is one of the reasons we only go on cruises that have the formal nights. It is a fantastic feeling getting dressed up in your tux. My wife would not have it any other way. She brings 2 formal outfits and about 7 pairs of shoes - she says she wont know which shoes to wear until just before stepping out of the cabin.

I personally dislike dressing up, I am more of a jeans & teeshirt kinda girl...but it's a cruise, it's a special occasion, it's a change of pace...so why not?! :)

It brings back the elegance of times gone by...imagine if teenagers stopped dressing for Prom or homecoming...it would certainly lose some of the specialness of the evening, and even the kids know that. ;)

My DH feels the same way, (well maybe a little bit more resistant)...so we will be dressed and maybe change into the jeans later on in the evening.

My wife was pregnant for our first two cruises, so she wanted to show-off her 'hard-won Size 2 body' on our most recent cruise last week. I talked her into only doing one formal night. The other one we skipped and went to Chops for dinner.

On our last cruise, we went to one formal night and spent the other at Johnny Rockets.

Admittedly, though - both times I felt sort of left-out. Even this past one, when I was walking around in a blazer and dress slacks. Everyone was dressed to the 9's and I felt underdressed. From now on, we'll do both formal nights.

Dave
