Also need info on freestyle dinnig? We are new to NCL, We are thinking about sailing on the Dawn. Does anyone have any pictures of cabin 9706,9708 or 9206 or can someone give me a detailed description? How does the freestyle dinning work? How many resturants are there on the Dawn that cost and which ones are free?. Which ones are included in the cruise cost? Can you wear a shorts in the main Dinning room? What restaurants are specialty and whcih ones comes with cruise fare? I did search for pictures and descriptions of the above cabins buty wasn't able to find any. Can you wear shorts in all of the dinning rooms? I guess my question is, will i have on shorts and someone at the table next to me have on a tux, is that how it works? Does dinner & lunch start at the same time everyday? Can you pnly wear shorts at a certain time in the main dinning room? As you can see, I am totally clueless with this freestyle dinning. Does anyone have any of their own personal pictures of those staterooms..

I know that they are advertising that "clothing is entirely freestyle". "Come as you are" is what I saw one of their ads say. Well the truth as I know it to be is this.....the dress code has not really changed much. You still can only wear shorts for breakfast and lunch.....but not dinner in all restaurants except for the Italian one and the buffet. Unless you are going on a crusie to Bermuda....in which case you are allowed to wear bermuda shorts for dinner.

However....with all the confusion with their new way of "not spitting it out clearly" and being so vague with these rules all the time...I say take your shorts and jeans and when you get on the ship ask what is or is not the rule for the day. It changes by the hour.

Most of the things you need to know you can find out on their web site...that's if you can find all the info and if you can read between the lines.

Here is a quick synopsis of Freestyle Dining:

I love Freestyle and that is why I only cruise on NCL.

Freestyle is all about your choice. Freestyle gives you the choice to eat WHEN you want, with WHO you want, WHERE you want, and HOW you want.

1.) You do not have assigned dining times. You can go the main restaurants anytime that they are open (5:30-9:30) and simply tell them how many of you there are and they will seat you, just like a shoreside restaurant. Unless you are a large group, you cannot make reservations in the main dining rooms. Sometimes this can cause you to wait a few minutes (usually less than 20) for a table if you dine during the peak hours of 6:30-8:00.

2.) You do have to make reservations for the Specialty Restaurants and most of them have a cover charge of $10-20 per person. (but that is only for the entree, you can have as many apetizers, salads, sides and desserts that you want.). You can make these for the entire week when you board. Not all specialty restaurants have a cover charge (LaTrattatoria for example) but all require reservations.

3.) You do not have assigned tablemates. You can dine with just your family or perhaps the friends you met that day. They have tables from 2 people to 10 people. You can also request to be seated with new people if you like. You usually do not have the same waiters each night, but you can request them!

4.) You can dress as you like. (within limits) All formal nights on all NCL ships are OPTIONAL in all dining venues. You do not have to dress up and can still eat anywhere. On formal night, only about 40% of the passengers will dress up and that will range from tuxes to shirt/tie. The other 60% will be in resort casual. (the 40% drops to about 30% dressed up on the Hawaiin cruises since Hawaiian attire is also an acceptable dress.)

With that said, you do have to dress in at least Resort Casual every night to dine in the restaurants. Resort casual simply means no shorts, jeans or t-shirts. Polo shirts, sun dresses, kahkis, and sneakers are all perfectly acceptable! I have never worn any more than a polo shirt, kahkis and sneakers to any meal on five NCL cruises! You will not feel out of place! The best part...the chance to dress as you feel comfortable.

(btw: if you have to wear jeans or shorts, you can then choose to dine in the Blue Lagoon (diner) or the buffet for dinner!)

On the Dawn (sailed on her in June): the free restaurants are:

Main Dining Rooms (no reservations): Venetian, Impressions and Aqua. All serve basically the same meal each night.

Specialty Restuarants:

Free but need reservations: LaTrattatoria (Italian) and Salsa (Tex-mex)

$15-$25 per person cover charge & Reservations: Cagney's Steakhouse; LeBistro; Tepperanki (sp?) -like a Japanese restaurant and Bamboo (Asian).

There is also the Market Buffet and Blue Lagoon (a diner like operation open 24 hours....great for a quick or late night bite.)

Thanks for the info, that was great. I just did another post at the same time you were replying here. You said these two restuarants are free but do require reservations( LaTrattatoria (Italian) and Salsa (Tex-mex).. Can you make reservations as the week goes on or do they fill up pretty quick and stop taking reservations? The ones that have a cover charge, do you have to pay the cover charge plus pay for certain items within the restuarant? Lastly, Just to be clear on attire, shorts and khakis can be worn in all restuarants even for dinner if they are dressy? or is it certain ones for breakfast lunch and dinner that will allow you to wear shorts.

Not even dressy shorts are allowed for dinner except at the Blue Lagoon (24 hour diner), the buffet and LaTrattatoria (Italian). Shorts are allowed "everywhere" for breakfast and lunch. No dress codes for breakfast and or lunch.

Simply put...all restaurants except the Blue Lagoon (24 hour diner), the buffet and LaTrattatoria (Italian), have a dress code for dinner only...no jeans, T-shirts, or shorts.

I did the Norwegian Dawn last year, and I was able to walk in and get a table without a reservation. I guess it depends on how busy they are at the time you come in, but I wouldn't worry about having to make reservations so far in advance. I'm sure if you're in the mood for Spanish food, making reservations the same day would be fine.
