In Halifax there is a ton of stuff to do. You can rent a car and drive out to Peggy's cove. It's a nice place if you want to visit...lunch at the restaruant is suppose to be very good. You can walk along the board walk from where the ship docks at pier 21. There are a lots of shops, bars, THE RUM CAKE FACTORY!!! along the way. Nice places to eat if you are so inclined. Also a little know fact but there is a crystal factory in Halifax that makes amazing crystal designs. Some really great things in there. You can tour Alexander Keith's brewery...it's a bit hokey but kinda fun.... plus you get free beer! When are you going? We had a load of fun when we went...twice!

The Maritime Museum of the Atlantic is also along the waterfront. I'm not really interested in museums but I love this one and have been there several times. There are interesting things there from the Titanic.the Halifax citidal is just up the hill as well. You'll see it when you sail in the harbour. Halifax is a nice city and the walk along the waterfront is very enjoyable.

We've been to Halifax five times now. We always rent a car and drive to view the beautiful Nova Scotia countryside. We usually head South along the coast for some amazing scenery. We have found many hidden treasures where no cruise ship passengers venture. I'd recommend renting a car for a very enjoyable day.

Anyone have suggestions for interesting sites to see in Halifax and Bar Harbor. Nothing too physical.

Thanks.

In Halifax:

A walk up the hill to the old fort.....probably not another one like it, in almost perfect condition. A bit physical, but I am 60 and it didn't wear me out. You can also get a taxi up the hill if need be.

Harbourfront is interesting, the Maritime Museum terrific and lots of good seafood restaurants and interesting shops there.

A drive out to Peggy's Cove doesn't take long, and just a little further up the road is the memorial to the Swissair crash which went down just off the coast.

aliana, there is an amazing amount of fabulous information on these two ports on the Ports of Call section of Cruise Critic. Lots of citizens of those areas answer cruisers' questions.

Lets see, what to do in Halifax.

Citadel Hill, Maritime Museum of the Atlantic (Great Titantic exhibit), Peggys Cove, Casino Nova Scotia (if you haven't had enough on the ship - about a 10-15 minute walk down the boardwalk), Keiths Brewery Tour, Cows Ice Cream (very good ice cream), Theodore Tugboat for the kids, also there is a Harbour Hopper tour (the vehicle goes on the street and in the water). The weather for the next few days is cloudy and the temps are supposed to be 9-14 degrees celcius.

Take the free FRED bus that comes right down to the pier and ride the whole loop through Halifax. We took it up as far as the Public Gardens and then walked over to the Citadel and then back down to the ship (an easy, downhill walk), stopping at the Maritime Museum on the way. They have a nice Titanic exhibit there, if you are interested in that.

In Bar Harbor we did a ship excursion that took us through Acadia Park up to Mount Cadillac and on the way back we stopped for blueberry pie. It was a lot of fun. Fantastic view from Mt. Cadillac.

And now for what NOT to do in Halifax or Bar Harbor - whale watching. If you envision whale watching as a chance to see whales breaching (jumping out of the water) and then watching their tail fins stick up above the waterline as depicted in many photos, that's not going to happen in Halifax or Bar Harbor. The type of whales that breach are not typically found in the New England area. The whales that you are likely to see if you see any at all may provide a brief view of their dorsal fin and that's about it.

And if you like lobster, be sure to have some in Bar Harbor. Maine lobsters are the very best! (I'm originally from Maine, so I'm allowed to say that!:D )

We hired a van driver with 2 other couples we met on ship to split costs and went to Peggy's cove in Halifax. If weather is sunny, it is a fabulous destination and photo opportunity! :) Also, did our own 'pub crawl' Great pubs within walking distance of piers.

In Bar Harbour ate lobster and walked around.

For Bar Harbor - check out the New England port of call for lots of good information. Besides blueberry ice cream it is also possible to have lobster ice cream at Ben & Bills (which I think sounds perfectly gross)http://www.benandbills.com/

PS - I love Ben & Bill's for other ice cream flavors and chocolate!

I've never cruised to Bar Harbor but know it well since I lived in Maine and it is absolutely beautiful. There are plenty of excursions as already mentioned but if you just want to kick back and enjoy the day on your own the town is great to walk around in. Lots of quaint shops to look around in and real New England places to eat. Despite it being a place tourists love it still remains a working fishing town and resturants usually close early in the evening. We are cruising there next Oct. and we plan to just enjoy the day in town as we've seen Arcadia and Cadillac mountain many times. Several good places to eat by the water and I recommend the lobster or NY strip steak and of course blueberry pie! Have a great cruise!:) I suggest you put Bar Harbor in seach and find a website about the town and if strolling around and relaxing is your thing, you'll love Bar Harbor!

One of the most enjoyable excursions we ever took was whale watching when we stopped in Saint John's, New Brunswick. We rented a car and drove down to Saint Andrews (took about an hour). We took a private whale watching excursion with Dr. Chuck and had a wonderful time. It was just my DW and myself and cost only $100 plus tip for three hours of whale watching. I highly recommend doing this if you visit Saint John's and don't mind an easy one hour drive with no traffic. We had a great time and would do it again in a heart beat.

In Halifax we did the ships Pub tour and had a blast!!! I really don't drink but enjoyed watching everyone!

I 'heard' that everyone that took the whale watching tour was very disappointed this time - lots & lots of seasick people and maybe one whale..cold & misserable waters. 10/24 - I think was the date. I imagine in the summer ww would be great but not this late in the seasom.
