RCI - Port of Miami check in Theft

Hello,

My family and I just got back from a great cruise aboard the Freedom of the Seas. However, I wanted make everyone aware to be carefull with your belongings at the Port of Miami. When we arrived via taxi at the port of Miami we as usual tipped the attendant to take care of our bags. Our 12 year old son had a backpack that he also left that was tagged with the room tag. In my sons backpack he had his Play Station Portible (PSP), 3 games, sunglasses, and LOTS of homework.

Sunday evening after dinner we had received all of our luggage except for our sons backpack. When I asked the cabin steward about it he informed us that all baggage had been delivered. He then advised that we should check on deck Two for any non-tagged baggage. We checked there and sure enough our sons backpack was there and the tag was ripped off. My son then opened his backpack to find his PSP and three games all gone. The cases for the games were still there, but they stole the games out of the cases. Obviously the theif only wanted items they could put in their pocket.

We immediately went to Guest Relations desk and reported the theft. They asked us to fill out a report and then sent two housekeeping personnel to our room to search it for the missing items. (Not sure why they did this, but we did not care). After the search of our room we contacted guest relations and were informed that they would turn the information over to an outside agency who would "handle it". I asked several times to speak with the head of security but was told he was to busy to talk to us anytime durring the cruise. I was told that the outside company would contact me at home after the cruise regarding the "alleged theft".

I still do not know what will happen. But, be carefull. And by the way, no I did not have cruise insurance. I have cruised 9 times and have never purchased it. I thought it was more for emergency situations, not for cruise line employee theft!!!

If anyone has experienced this before, please let me know how I should proceed or if my son is just out of luck...

Man, that's too bad! I'm not sure what your next step should be--if you paid with a credit card, don't they carry some kind of trip insurance that could be brought into play? How about your homeowner's ins????

From now on, never put anything of value into a bag that doesn't lock, unless you keep it with you at all times.

That is so unfortunate. As the above poster mentioned, you might want to check your homeowners policy. Thing is, odds are there are deductables and plus it would put a mark on your policy that claim had been filed so you might want to think about that. I won't give you a lecture on travel insurance as that's water under the bridge but it would have covered your loss (sometimes with a $50 deductable). I didn't have anything stolen but did have my luggage damaged by RCCL. They have loop holes in the claim with max. payouts and deductables. I went through the whole "housekeeping" thing too with no avail. I just wrote it off.

It was a pricey lessons learned. A carryon like a backpack with valuables should be kept with you like a purse. That too is water under the bridge at this point and I'm sorry you had to learn this the hard way.

wow...Sorry that happend..

We are in the process of buying our DS almost 7 his first Gameboy...Going with the Nintendo DS lite..( i know i know don't even go there..Something about a promise he thinks Santa made:rolleyes: )

I can only imagine how ticked I would be to loose the PSP

But people everywhere please!!!....Just as on an airplane, bus, train etc etc....Keep your valuables with you...No cameras,computers,I-pods,gameboys,jewelry etc goes in checked luggage...ever....

ON another note...My DH & DS were at a Cubscout campout this weekend. While waiting on the rope bridge,DH thought someone behind him was standing way to close, but did not give it much mind... (on the rope bridge at BSC!!) come to find out a couple of items were missing from his backpack..Nothing like a PSP..But come on,whats with people...

Two weeks ago while at St Thomas for the day we went to Morning Star Beach. Someone lifted my wallet. I had it returned by security a little while later they took all the large bills only left $1s and $5s. They got almost $300 cash. Stupid me I cashed $300 worth of travel checks before going ashore so I did nto have to worrie about getting correct change in port. t does not make sence why they did not take all the cash, Unless they wanted to leave me enough for cab fair back to the port.

I thought it was more for emergency situations, not for cruise line employee theft!!!

The items could have been stolen by port employees so it may not have been cruise line employees. As others have mentioned, anything of value needs to be carried with you. I guess the question that comes to my mind is why you would check a small item such as a backpack, particulalry when the backpack contained electronic equipment that could easily be damaged. I would be afraid to check anything that size since it would likely be crushed by all the larger pieces of luggage. Overall, I would say that your son is just out of luck since they will never be able to ascertain if the items were stolen by port personnel or ships personnel.

Hello,

As other's have already mentioned, you are making assumptions that may not be true, you have no way of knowing where the loss occurred, could also have been a fellow passenger, the bags sit in big piles at sorting and delivery etc. It would be VERY easy to pick up a backpack, take out what they did and dump it back off. So to claim it was the ship employees just isn't factual.

AGAIN- NEVER leave anything of value as checked baggage. Sorry for the loss, but the reponsibility for the valuable items was yours.
