hammybee Posted October 27, 2006 #2 Share Posted October 27, 2006 When traveling anywhere, I am prone to doing the Big Mac Value Meal (where is Kyros when I need her?) test of the local economy. If is the best indicator of the cost of living I know of. And I must confess, I get a kick out of checking out a grocery store when off shore, just to see what they have and what it all costs. Right before 6:00 PM, on Saturday, the butchers in Athens run a buy one/get one special on Lamb's heads. Who knew?
AAAAmerican Posted October 27, 2006 Author #3 Share Posted October 27, 2006 Yes and the two menu prices sometimes three ... I am sorry I have not had a Mc Donalds meal in a coons age or more. I think the last was in Stamford when i was getting the Dogs Vision and Hips checked at that Vet. Athens has a wonderful abundance of eateries and the Falaffel there is Yummy... Yes Europe and in Asia do dispaly most of the animals by Steel hook hangers... Did you write your initials ever walking up to the P in the Century plants ? michmike Posted October 27, 2006 #4 Share Posted October 27, 2006 Do land beverages count? My coffee was "ground" this morning... just a small parcel, mind you (and just for the record, I've never P'd in the century plants) although, after 5 cups, I've certainly had the urge
WNYCRUISER Posted October 27, 2006 #5 Share Posted October 27, 2006 I get a kick out of checking out a grocery store when off shore, Where do you find these off shore grocery stores?:p If you are running low on supplies, can you get the ship to pull in so you can restock???? Joanandjoe Posted October 27, 2006 #6 Share Posted October 27, 2006 Where do you find these off shore grocery stores?:p If you are running low on supplies, can you get the ship to pull in so you can restock???? Funny! Actually, one can get interesting stuff at grocery stores, at much lower cost than at tourist places: marzipan in Spain and France, cheese in France, candies and stuff like tomato paste in tubes in Italy, ginger beer in some islands, local wine, interesting cakes and cookies, chocolates in Belgium and the Netherlands, maple syrup and amazing jams and jellies in Canada, coffee in Costa Rica, rum in Panama, etc. I don't think we've ever had a trip of a week or more, cruise or land trip, when we haven't visited a grocery. There ya go. I see AAAAmerican and I are not the only ones who likes to check out the off shore grocery stores. Some of my better scores included COSTCO in Kona for Royal Kona coffee....about 75% less for what it cost in tourist shops elsewhere and made for fabulous gifts. The other is ouzo in cans off the Plaka in Athens. The locals mix it with Coke. I prefer it with my nectar, Dr. Pepper. :)
Joanandjoe Posted October 27, 2006 #14 Share Posted October 27, 2006 There ya go. I see AAAAmerican and I are not the only ones who likes to check out the off shore grocery stores. :) Where do they have floating groceries? We've been to a lot of on shore groceries, but never a floating one offshore. Sounds like fun! (Either that or a typo.) Someone asked where you find grocery stores. If they're not visible from the ship (as in Halifax), ask a local person or the tourist board. A lot of people use the local groceries to avoid the cruise line's charges for soda and bottled water. We do that, and the local pop is often quite good. No soda on our Celebrity ship in Bermuda was as good as the local diet ginger beer, and it was pretty inexpensive. It mixed nicely with the rum, too--instant Dark and Stormy.
kakalina Posted October 27, 2006 #15 Share Posted October 27, 2006 We always check out the local groceries. In some of the third world countries it can be a real eye opener. It can certainly make you appreciate your local health laws. On the other hand we have found some great bargains.

Yes Joanandjoe, I meant offshore not off shore. Sometime typos make for an interesting read. I guess we should plan to cruise in Asia because they do have off shore grocers. :)

AAAAmerican Posted October 28, 2006 Author #18 Share Posted October 28, 2006 Yes even off of shore there are stores.. even in America here *S* On rivers and lakes there are wakes... On land Based items.. In Holland they use ..Wiinebago type Motor Vehicles for Stores on Wheels... yes even meals... In America we used to have every kind of vedor on wheels too.. fruit/Nuts and veggies.. the Good Humor trucks.. Ice , fish , Mail, groceries, etc....etc.... and then came Giant which created thee now almighty Supermarket then the little vendors on wheels started going the way of the horse and buggy..few and far between except in the Amish and Mennonite communities etc... In Asia and Africa as well S. America still in parts of Europe they are in water shops and stores. Amsterdam has Canal Stores... Rotterdam... Scotland too... Have you been to SterlingShire? Near Gargannock? Or Aberfoyle? Look even at the Phillippines in low tide there are thousands more islands..Malawi... there people sell anything they can! On cruise ships even in Alaska I saw local vendors selling goods/services from boats... Sometimes it is very easy to overlook things not seen often.. There used to be a few small boats selling items on the Passaic River where what is now NJ Rt 21 and 3 intersection even from a barge that sold groceries and was a bar too ...and yes they did have cats aboard... Most people only see Rutts Hut now with the Deep Double Fried HotDogs and the Mustard/Saurkraut Special Secret Sauce.. But one warning for that location if you drink more than one cup of coffee be prepared to pay for each one... I think StarBucks got the idea for charging that way *S* So yes Captain HammyBee is really correct ya see. Did ya get my eMail I sent ya with the question, as well the Picture of Bermuda Chicken Eggs Large at $6.25 a Dozen? BMD and USD$ are at parity. Where do they have floating groceries? We've been to a lot of on shore groceries, but never a floating one offshore. Sounds like fun! (Either that or a typo.) AAAAmerican Posted October 28, 2006 Author #19 Share Posted October 28, 2006 Texas Dr Pepper with the secret ingredients is still best! Even with that Orchid product added... Real Vanilla! I am sorry I never really go in CostCos. Here I go toget stuff once in awhile at BJs when they have gratis memberships..as you remember how what a great consumer pricing area this is/was?*S* Yes I did /do drink a nice wine Ouzo and love that Retsina with that pine is so nice....i drink it thrice... KONA is my very Favorite Coffee and the only American one! I have got it by DHL, USPS, UPS and about 20$ a pound here delivered. A store from MA Trader Joes rated very high in a recent issue , I use as a comparison resourse, of Consumer Reports. ShopRite too has it. Never get a blend as they do use inferior beans and especially when it has flavoring (flavouring).... Wheh I have been to HI I have gone to the producers. You may order direct fropm a lot of them.. Yes a great Christmas American gifting source too. There ya go. I see AAAAmerican and I are not the only ones who likes to check out the off shore grocery stores.
