Rare Radio Posted October 28, 2006 #1 Share Posted October 28, 2006 I have just been contacted from a fellow Cruise Critic passenger (TPKeller) from the Grandeur of the Seas. He has reported that due to rough seas, the Miami port call will be cancelled. I hope everything will be OK later on...The forecast for Key West for Monday is Sunny and 85F... TPKeller writes " After all night and all day of 40+ headwinds and 18 foot swells, (making at times only 12 mph, instead of the required 20 knots), the Captain just announced that we are skipping Miami altogtether, and also postponing tonight's formal night. Lots of folks are under the weather " There are over 70 fellow Cruise Critic members on board the Grandeur 9 nt Western Caribbean, which left Baltimore on October 27... Radio   . GMoney Posted October 28, 2006 #4 Share Posted October 28, 2006 Apparently, Granduer can't handle the seas the way the newer ships can! I think most ships would feel the effects of "40+ headwinds and 18 foot swells..."

Hopefully everything will be smooth from now on. Where I live in NY we are also expecting 40 to 60 mile an hour winds tonight and thru tomorrow. We also had to batten down the hatches. Maybe they are blowing up from Baltimore? This weather lately is very strange.

sdear Posted October 29, 2006 #7 Share Posted October 29, 2006 I think most ships would feel the effects of "40+ headwinds and 18 foot swells..." When we sailed on Freedom, the night we were coming back into Miami, we hit some 40-45 mph headwinds. That ship handled them like a pro ! We felt very very minimal movement. I was very impressed. Rare Radio Posted October 29, 2006 Author #8 Share Posted October 29, 2006 TPKeller also metioned that : " They had the outside decks completely closed all night and today, only one way to get out near the covered areas of the pool. I hope that everyone is feeling OK, and I am sure that the weather will improve for all passengers by Monday. Radio

Did you attend Captain Admarker's Nautical Notes lecture on Grandeur? Sorry folks, a little off topic. Thanks, wraithe

Radio ;) ;) Yep, I have to agree, he did a very well detailed video and lecture and there were several really good questions, with good answers. Would love to see an engine room specific talk by one of the ship's Chief Engineers sometime. I'm sailing on Radiance in March and hoping to get to chat with her Chief Engineer while I'm there. Have you heard anything else from Grandeur yet? Later,
loveJake Posted October 29, 2006 #12 Share Posted October 29, 2006 I have a co-worker on this cruise, so I am posting to be kept up with any updates. I cruised out of Baltimore in May 2005 and we had +horrible seas along the east coast and I warned him this could happed. Our outside doors were also locked and barf bags were placed around the ship. Thanks for the update.

Thanks for the update. Rough seas/storms can happen any time of year, on any ship, sailing out of any port. I've personally experienced this many times. Usually during Bermuda sailings. It's occasionally part of the cruise experience. I'm sure they will have better weather for the rest of their cruise.
loveJake Posted October 29, 2006 #14 Share Posted October 29, 2006 I have sailed 10 times from Florida, skirting hurricanes and tropical storms. Have had to change cruise ports and have missed some and sailed in some ruff seas. But I have never sailed in seas like going down the coast on the Atlantic ocean. 2 to 3 days of constant bobbing is not my idea of fun, you may hit some bad weather when you are South, but it never lasts that long. I checked the sea reports on Thursday and this is exactly what was predicted, very high seas and gale force winds.

redcat72 Posted October 29, 2006 #18 Share Posted October 29, 2006 Thank you for this update Radio (& theron!) We are currently on the Freedom and were waiting for the Grandeur to show up. I was wondering where she was. Muster is in a few minutes. Weather currently in Miami is hot and humid. Tell Theron we hope his cruise has more calm seas in the future (if I do not run into him at Cozumel.) We were on that same cruise out of Baltimore last year. Glad we chose the Freedom this year. :)
yuyi64 Posted October 30, 2006 #19 Share Posted October 30, 2006 Apparently, Granduer can't handle the seas the way the newer ships can! The Grandeur handles rough seas very well, better than most cruise ships I've been on. The kind of seas described by TPKeller would slow down any ship and cause some passengers to feel less than well.

skypilotks Posted October 30, 2006 #21 Share Posted October 30, 2006 We just got off Mariner this morning and went right by Miami last night, and didn't notice anything other then the rainy weather we had all day yesterday!! sppunk Posted October 30, 2006 #22 Share Posted October 30, 2006 I have a very good friend and her extended family sailing - it's the first cruise for many of them. I hope they aren't scared not to go back. I enjoy rough seas myself, but know they likely don't. I hope things calm down very soon for Grandeur. wvjohn Posted October 30, 2006 #23 Share Posted October 30, 2006 We were on the prior cruise coming in and had 12-18 ft seas and 30 mph headwinds on Wed. nite. They had to drain the pools because of the slosh (I have a great vid which I will post when I get a chance) and they cancelled the Broadway show, closed off the decks, etc. Grandeur seems to handle the seas pretty well, but running directly into the swells there is a lot of up and down movement....hope it clears up for the rest of the trip :)
TPKeller Posted October 30, 2006 #24 Share Posted October 30, 2006 Just a quick note, I'm not a "LIVE" poster like Radio! :) Too much other stuff to do! :) Yesterday was absolutely wonderful, and everyone's spirits were definitely improved. They also closed the windjammer for lunch on Saturday, many crew said they had never seen that, apparently they had so much stuff falling they decided it was unsafe so they abandoned the kitchen spaces until calmer weather. Remember the windjammer and it's kitchen are all the way forward. They postponed formal night until Sunday night, not only because of the large number of people under the weather but because of the high heel issue for the ladies. :) Today is looking wonderful so far (from the cabin window at least) so I will leave for now, perhaps check in a bit later. RedCat, if you see this, we watched you come out of Miami last night, and we were ahead of you much of the evening. It was just after sunset, but there was NO DOUBT it was Freedom coming out of the channel... quite an amazing sight, although a bit too far and dark to get a picture. :( Thanks for the well wishes! I'll put them to good use! Theron
