will work to cruise Posted October 29, 2006 #1 Share Posted October 29, 2006 Do most of you book your airline seperatly or through RCCL? How about travel insurance? TIA
Happy ks Posted October 29, 2006 #2 Share Posted October 29, 2006 In the past, we have always found that we can save a lot of money by booking our own air and insurance. This is not always the case and you should look into it on an individual basis every time you book. We always fly in a day ahead, if we have to fly to port, so no worries about missing the ship. The insurance is (can be) quite a savings on your own, but again, check it out before making your decision. We also prefer to arrange our own hotels and ground transportation. We find it's cheaper, easier and saves time, rather than waiting around for cruiseline transportation. You can usually save enough booking your own hotel to pay for dinner and breakfast the next day, even more if you dare to use Priceline. While the cruiseline will assist you in finding flights, putting you up in a hotel and such if you miss your ship, so will an independent travel insurance company. All in all, we just prefer to book the cruise only with the cruiseline, that's the business they are in and all the other stuff is better off handled individually. Many people like the convenience of one stop shopping, but I don't think of it as a hassle at all, preferring to use my cash on the cruise itself. dougp26364 Posted October 29, 2006 #3 Share Posted October 29, 2006 To date we've always booked on our own. I presently have cruise/air booked through RCI for our Hawaiian cruise but, it's looking like I may be cancelling that. I pricing holds for the next 30 days (can't book yet as it's still to far out), I'll be booking a direct flight on Airmidwest out of Kanas City for about half the price RCI is charging me. I can easily pay for 2 nights hotel, transfers, and still have a a couple dollars in my pocket plus, it gives me a day pre and a day post cruise. With the way things go wrong for us when traveling to/from vacation, that extra day cushion sure takes the stress out of travel.
lovemylab Posted October 29, 2006 #4 Share Posted October 29, 2006 I book on my own at the advice of my TA. We prefer to fly to the Port a day early while RCCL will book the flights the same day. In comparing the prices, I have found that the airfare I book on my own is slightly cheaper and a more direct route.
Sheffie Posted October 29, 2006 #5 Share Posted October 29, 2006 Another thing: if you book cruise air, you have no say in which flight you fly unless you pay an extra fee. I have even read about groups being split up in the plane as well as being put on different flights.
