Tipping for Cat 12 Passengers Different?

another thread just got me thinking about this...

going into our 1st cat 12 suite in february. Are Cat 12 Passengers expected to tip the cabin steward more than the customary $20 extra on a 5 day cruise for good service? Cat 12 pax are occupying the most expensive staterooms on the ship and cabin stewards have a bigger area to clean each day. Do you past Cat 12 passengers tip more? if so, how much? and what about room service? more on that too?

As far as I know the gratuity is the same... they really don't have much more work to do. Same towels, same beds... Not sure why anyone would tip more for room service just because they are in a Cat 12... the food is still the same as well.

it wld just seem to me that you'd be expected to tip more if you're in one of the most expensive staterooms on the ship (just like you wld be if you had a penthouse suite in a hotel). but, i don't want to feel compelled to do this just b/c of location if doing this is not the norm. i always tip something extra for great service anyway. just curious from past cat 12 occupants if the tip they give is more than the customary. and if so, if they do merely b/c they're in a suite.

Difference being... in the Penthouse suite of a hotel, your level of SERVICE is higher... it has nothing to do with the square footage of the room, you are tipping based on a different level of service. Your level of service on a Carnival ship is going to be the same... you don't get treated in any different way.

Other cruiselines Penthouse suite are a lot different from Carnival cat 12 suite. For one other penthouse suites gets lots of extra perks-- on carnival you get priorty check in only.

Other penthouses may get a butler-- that is what cost more in the way of tipping. On Carnival you get a cabin steward who will share your 10 bucks per person per day.

On Royal Caribbean Cruise Lines, they suggest a higher tip amount for the cabin steward for Grand Suites and Owners Suites. The Dining Room staff for Suite passengers gets the same as all other cabins. Their logic is that cabin stewards for suites get assigned fewer cabins and the extra $ prevents them from losing out. Seems to reason that the suites are larger and take longer to clean.

Also FYI if for some reason a OBC is declared, you will get the same amount as a 1A Cat.

I guess I don't see it... they aren't doing ANY more in a suite than in a normal cabin. They don't typically vacuum, except at the end of the cruise or if you are messy :p So yes, it would take an extra 45 seconds to vacuum the additional space... but we are only talking additional floor space here... same bedding, same towels... same ice bucket. I don't see how it would be extra work, just because there is more floor space

But are there any posters out here who have actually occupied a Cat 12 and tipped more because of it? I'm just curious to see what those who have stayed in them have done.

My parents were in one, said they only tipped additional as they would with ANY cabin (for great service)... our good friends were in one 2 years ago, they tipped the standard grat (not great service)

Okay, because you asked the question of "those who have stayed in them"...

here's my Carnival history:

OS (also known as Penthouse 1 or 2)...Ecstasy...three times

Cat 12...various ships Fantasy Class...five times

I've also sailed on other lines, and in ocean views up to the Royal Suite.

That said (...and only my personal views...no judgment of others' views):

I do NOT tip more "because" I'm in a Cat 12 or higher. I "tip" solely based on service. I always pre-pay (personal preference) my gratuities, and add more at the END of my stay...if warranted.

The Rhapsody Royal Suite was gorgeous, but had the worst team of attendants I've ever had. The Ocean View on the Elation had a superb team, and other cabins I've occupied have had teams who were pleasant and did their jobs.

Do what is comfortable for YOU. Additional gratuitity is NOT necessary solely because you are sailing in a Cat 12.

Have a great trip.
