GATOR MOM Posted November 4, 2006 Author #26 Share Posted November 4, 2006 Hey Sailorgirl I got a travel book ( Frommers Seattle 2006) from our library today...a bit early but I enjoy reading before I go...know what to expect. And...the front of the book has the greatest pictures of the city...it really looks lovely...but...I have to ask...weather...how is it? Very rainy? How cold is it in May? I'm in Florida ( in case you don't know) & the hubby has no blood! Even today...I'm in shorts...he's in jeans with a heavy sweatshirt!!!
Sailorgirlseattle Posted November 4, 2006 #27 Share Posted November 4, 2006 My parents were visiting here from Florida a few summers ago ... during a heat wave when we were all MELTING ... and my Mom was afraid she was going to get cold! LOL. May can be cool and wet, but it can also be quite nice. Pretty much a gamble, so come prepared for almost anything. If you like to read fiction about places that you're visiting, pick up some of J.A. Jance's Beau Beaumont mysteries ... they are mostly set here in Seattle and she's great at using the city as a backdrop ... down to REAL businesses and everything. She did on Beau mystery set on a cruise ship in Alaska, although I can't remember the name of the book. Would be a fun read ON the cruise though. GATOR MOM Posted November 4, 2006 Author #28 Share Posted November 4, 2006 Sailorgirl I just picked up a J A Jance book @ the library today!!! But it is a new book...so guess it is not the one re an Alaskan cruise...I'll check it out. I started to flip thru the tour book...it seems I'll get a lot of use of an umbrella! But your scenery will make it worth it...it is so flat here...mountains are such a great pleasure. We just went to San fran in Sept...& drove over to Yosemite & Tahoe...absolutely beautiful!!!! What part Florida do your folks live in? Just curious...you don't have to tell me...it's OK here...if you like hurricanes.
Sailorgirlseattle Posted November 4, 2006 #29 Share Posted November 4, 2006 Wow! Let me know how you like J.A. Jance! I love her writing. I've only read her Beaumont books .. her female detective books are set in the Southwest, and I haven't read those yet. My folks actually just moved back to Ohio last month, but they spent 10 years or so in Port Charlotte, just north of Punta Gorda on Charlotte Harbor. Charley's eye went right over their house! Oh, and don't bother with an umbrella in Seattle .. you'll just stand out as a tourist!:D Really. Most of us locals just wear rain gear with hoods. Ya get used to it. cruisemamma99 Posted November 4, 2006 #30 Share Posted November 4, 2006 Were staying at the Warwick Hotel next summer. Anyone stay three before?? Looked nice and close to everything.
creddick Posted November 4, 2006 #31 Share Posted November 4, 2006 I highly recommend the Crowne Plaza on the corner of 6th and Senaca. Very clean and one of the largest most comfortable rooms we have ever had. It is about a 6 block walk to the waterfront, etc. A great location. As to smoking, I think all hotels, restaurants, bars, public buildings etc. in Washington are non smoking. Regardless, if we return to Seattle, the Crowne Plaza will most definitely be our stay. We got a great rate too.
Sailorgirlseattle Posted November 5, 2006 #32 Share Posted November 5, 2006 I've stayed at the Warwick ... it's a beautiful hotel! Tiny little stepout balconies and a killer view of the city, from the southside rooms. Nice restaurants nearby, and good shopping. Asaggio italian restaurant is just a coupla doors down, and it's a very nice rest.
GATOR MOM Posted November 5, 2006 Author #33 Share Posted November 5, 2006 Hi Sailorgirl I guess I better check out that Warwick hotel! As for hurricanes...it has been a very quiet year here...your folks escaped the threat & moved to Ohio. What a different climate up there!!! So...no umbrella...I did buy a rain jacket as we were sappose to do Alaska this past Sept but the ship had engine problems so cruise was canceled. My hubby is the one who reads...I'll let you know if he likes this JA Jance book. I use to read more...but lately I fall asleep with a book:confused:
GATOR MOM Posted November 5, 2006 Author #34 Share Posted November 5, 2006 Hummmm....That Warwick hotel looks very nice!!! And it seems they offer free transport to cruise terminals...most interesting!!!
Sailorgirlseattle Posted November 5, 2006 #35 Share Posted November 5, 2006 Warwick is not at all far from either cruise terminal. Nice hotel. rain jackets -- cannot go wrong with gortex. Any hiker gear is well used in this area.

My group just booked this hotel through Hotwire at a great rate :D We stayed at the Crowne Plaza last year and it is a great hotel too but I will enjoy having a balcony with a door that I can open :)
Nanietwo Posted November 6, 2006 #37 Share Posted November 6, 2006 Is the Warwick hotel close to the amtrak station? If not could you recommend a nice hotel that is close since we are taking amtrak early in the morning to Vancouver to board our ship. Thank You Lynn
star7228 Posted November 6, 2006 #38 Share Posted November 6, 2006 I've now been looking up Seattle hotels all morning for our one-night pre-cruise stay next June. I am really struggling with what type of hotel/room to look for. We're only there for one night before the cruise, and my question is, should we get a city view room or a water view room? We'll be on a cruise for 7 days viewing the ocean ;) and we have an aft balcony, so we'll get lots of views that way. We've never been to Seattle, and don't know if we'll get back there any time soon (we're from Michigan), so I wonder if we should try to get a great view of the city skyline as opposed to sound views? Any recommendations? :) I looked at the Warwick this morning, but unfortunately I was told they were totally booked up for 6/23, the night we need to stay there:eek: Looks like I need to get on this pronto! haha Thanks in advance for any advice! :)
Sailorgirlseattle Posted November 6, 2006 #39 Share Posted November 6, 2006 Nanietwo, no the Warwick is not near the train station ... Amtrak is near the football stadium and some govt. buildigs. There is a new hotel opening near the stadium, but on the far side from Amtrak. It's called the Silver Cloud. But I'm sure most of the big hotels downtown would shuttle you to your train, or a cab ride would be short and not too pricey. Star, you might look into the Edgewater on the waterfront. Or downtown there are a bunch of hotels .. the Sheraton, Alexis, The Westin ... tons of 'em. BTW, I'd go for the city view too, for just the reasons you said. Thank YouLynn I don't think any of the downtown hotels are that far. We stayed at the Crowne Plaza last year and the taxi was only $6 plus tip. The Warwick is a few blocks further so we will pay slightly more this year. I wouldn't be too concerned about the distance as long as you are in the downtown area. Gawga Girl Posted November 6, 2006 #41 Share Posted November 6, 2006 Has anyone done the Inn at the Harbor Steps? The location looks good, for we want to be in walking distance of Pikes Market, etc. Would appreciate any info.

We booked the Westin, and I'm really looking forward to it! Except now I'm wishing we were flying in on Friday instead of Saturday to spend at least 2 days exploring Seattle! :) Of course that would just be much more expensive, and I'd rather save that money for shore excursions!! :D
Sailorgirlseattle Posted November 8, 2006 #43 Share Posted November 8, 2006 Hey cool! The Westin is right in the center of things. I'm sure you'll get to experience a lot of Seattle in your time here.
GATOR MOM Posted November 9, 2006 Author #44 Share Posted November 9, 2006 OK...we've gotten a few ideas re hotels in Seattle & all sound great...but...how about hotels near Mount Rainier? I checked sites & see a few lodges right in the Park...but what about any towns near-by? Or...is the area real wilderness. We went to Yosemite this year...& there were a few hotels in near-by towns...not many...yes...beautiful wilderness. So...what's the story near Mt Rainier...might just try it out before I cruise:rolleyes:
Sailorgirlseattle Posted November 9, 2006 #45 Share Posted November 9, 2006 Mt. Rainier is pretty far away from Seattle ... you'll definitely want to plan time for that. Not sure of all the towns, hotels, etc ... I can think of the town of Orting though, which is near. As for the Harbor Steps question, I've never stayed there but it LOOKS really nice and is definitely in the thick of things downtown.
GATOR MOM Posted November 9, 2006 Author #46 Share Posted November 9, 2006 Thx Sailorgirl...I'll check out that town Orting. We may be flying into to San Fran & driving up to Seattle...that should put us driving right by Rainier...thought it might be a nice stop over... Hope all is OK with you...see the terrible rains out there:(
mbisson Posted November 9, 2006 #47 Share Posted November 9, 2006 Actually, for visiting a mountain, it would be a shorter drive (off the freeway) to Mt St Helens. -Monte
Sailorgirlseattle Posted November 9, 2006 #48 Share Posted November 9, 2006 I agree with Monte on St. Helens, if you're coming up I-5. I'm in the City here, so no flooding for me. Looks pretty bad for some of the folks out in the farmlands though.:(

I'm tempted to go over to Fall City (but probably won't)! http://www.snoqualmiefalls.com/ BTW-If traveling up I5-I'd probably try to spend a bit of time near Shasta as well. -Monte
Sailorgirlseattle Posted November 9, 2006 #50 Share Posted November 9, 2006 Shasta is cool .. I have a friend who has a cabin on the east slope and we've camped out there several times. I've not been to Hood, but hear that it's well worth the trip too. Have you seen the aerials of snoqualmie falls on the news? Pretty darn impressive!!
