bepsf Posted November 3, 2006 #1 Share Posted November 3, 2006 Scotty called me from Westerdam tonite (he's on the HAL-O-Ween/Bear cruise) - he said that they're in the middle of the ocean and his phone suddenly beeped and he has 5 bars! So what does he do? *Start calling everyone telling them where he is (in the suite) I told him to hang up fast - those calls are gonna be hella expensive!

Schplinky Posted November 3, 2006 #8 Share Posted November 3, 2006 :(Another sanctuary where you are forced to listen to others' loud cell phone conversations I agree. Cruises were one of the last places you could escape this. Luckily, the surcharges are really high and so that should prevent some people from yammering on too much. Given that most cruises stop in port most days (or at least every other day), it seems incomprehensible that people need to be calling even more, while sitting on a pool deck. I wish they could block the signal in the pool areas and just allow these functions to work from folks' rooms. I was in Las Vegas on the weekend and it was confounding to me how many people dining alone would call people (or be called) all through the breakfast meal and would talk while they were eating. Lastly, why do people on cell phones always talk so loudly?
Odd Ball Posted November 3, 2006 #9 Share Posted November 3, 2006 Just what I want to hear on a cruise, Ride of the Valkyries, and all those other tunes that people love to have on their cell phones.
fcorey Posted November 3, 2006 #10 Share Posted November 3, 2006 accidentally discovered the service on Oosterdam while playing a game on wife's cell phone.... was killing time while she was getting her self ready for dinner. I was very surprised when I saw that it was functioning just fine with full signal! At that point I quickly shut it off and thanked god I left my blackberry at home! :D

RuthC Posted November 3, 2006 #12 Share Posted November 3, 2006 Ok i give, what exactly are thest wang wang's i keep hearing so much about? It's a potent potable. Emphasis on "potent". I don't remember all that's in it, but do remember that it's a combination of several liquors with some citrus juices thrown in. Not a bad drink, but didn't make me a convert, either. twinkletoes4445 Posted November 3, 2006 #13 Share Posted November 3, 2006 Well, as a business owner, I am THRILLED that they will have cell phone service. The biggest issue for me is pulling hubby away from the business, and now if there is any crisis, he can be reached....which means MORE cruising for me!!!! Yeah!!! He's reluctant to go places where he can't be reached. Hubby hates talking on the phone, and only talks when he has to. As much as I hate cell phones, for us, we need them to keep on top of our business. I just hope they have cell phone service on the Zuiderdam when were on it next year. It is expensive...we used ours a bit while we were in Grand Cayman, so I hope this will stop people from yammering on and on and on....and it might. I think it was $1.65 or so per minute for our calls.
Charliesmom Posted November 3, 2006 #14 Share Posted November 3, 2006 I hope folks realize that when we are in port if you use your cell phone while on the ship, you will incur a use charge, whereas in the past, if you were in port and there was cell phone service, you did not incur that charge. I made calls from Hawaii sitting on my balcony on the Island Princess and it cost the same as if I were home in Massachusetts. That will no longer be true. So beware cruisers. Making calls from the ship might be more expensive than you bargained for. Roberta

jtl513 Posted November 4, 2006 #16 Share Posted November 4, 2006 Yes, cellular service will eventually be available on all of HAL's fleet. Oh Joy! I don't mind people making brief, necessary calls, but those people that I can't get away from in airports that are obviously just killing time talking trivia drive me nuts!! I get up and move away and another one will sit down near me. A couple of days ago there was a woman talking so long and loudly that everyone within 100 feet could hear all her gossiping! She was even annoying OTHER callers!:eek:

She was even annoying OTHER callers!:eek: That is annoying...and you know it had to be bad if other callers were miffed. Not long ago, we were on a plane and there was this guy sitting behind us that not only was yammering on his phone very loudly, but he had on enough cologne to choke a horse. It was awful. The flight attendant had to tell him, more than once, to get off the phone! I wished they had tossed his rear off the plane. But this is just another example of how people are these days...and it's not just cell phones. I've lost count how many times we've been in a restaurant and there is someone who is yammering away in a voice that is too loud. It's as if people have no manners. I have no desire to know about Aunt Lucy's recent surgery...and the complications...while eating my lunch. It's sad to watch the behavior of some people these days. And you wonder why their children are out of control? Ha! They learn from example.

I know what you mean - earlier this year before takeoff, some "princess" in the row ahead of me refused to get off the phone or bring their chair upright in preparation for takeoff until the head steward came & threatened to throw her and her entire group of 4 off the plane! Schplinky Posted November 4, 2006 #19 Share Posted November 4, 2006 I was at the Bellagio hotel in Las Vegas by the pool and this woman kept phoning all her friends and screaching into the phone "Guess where I am?!?" and she wouldn't say until they had guessed a few places. Then, she would blurt out that she was at "that Oceans 11 hotel" and that it was JUST SO RELAXING in such a loud voice. Finally, one of the pool attendants asked her to lower her voice or go into the hotel to take her calls. She was very upset and started complaining about bad service as she stomped off but I'm pretty sure the attendant got lots of tips that day. What goes through these peoples minds??? Do they think they are just that special that the rest of us have to deal with them and their silly antics? Good for the steward for telling them they may get booted off the plane... The guy that was behind us was talking "business" of some sort, but it wasn't the usual "getting things done," it was more talking about $$$ and how much he was going to make on something. I was not impressed. Fool. I wanted to tell him that we're all happy that he has a big-fat-wallet, but his big-fat-mouth was driving us all nuts. He was a slick dude...and I can't even imagine doing business with someone like that!
