Norwegian Dawn Charges??????

Cruising Tammy

Recommended Posts

I just came back last Sunday, the 29th from the Dawn. My sign and sail account was $590.

Yesterday I looked at my recent credit card charges, and the $590 was there from the Dawn, along with additional charges for $35.52, $78.41, $300.00 and $94.48!

I called the customer relations number at NCL, and they opened a file for me to investigate this. They informed me it would take 10-15 business days to figure out what these charges are for! They had no info. what these charges were for. But they were quick as hell to charge my credit card.

Anyway, has this happened to anyone before?

Can anyone speculate as to what they might be attempting to charge me for?

And before anyone asks, I didn't use any of the liquor, soda or candy in my room. And I didn't take anything home with me by "accident." :-)

Thanks in advance for any input you may have.

Tammy -

I know that some cruiselines use "temporary" charges that basically act as test authorizations. Sometimes within a few days, these charges automatically disappear from your credit card statement (if you are checking it online). I've had some "temp" charges take a week to remove - after the final charge was approved (and those weren't from cruiselines).

Did you try calling your credit card company to see what they knew about the charges?

I hardly think they'd put a "temp charge" on a credit card for the amount of $300. Those "temp charges" are usually small. Wondering if these are charges that were made after the bill was generated...like the night before debarkation. Also, wouldn't your remember a bill for $300? Could that be trips excursions or casino cash advance? Hmm.

Its not usual for the first hold to be for $300.00, that would be the amount they send when they first set up the ceredit charge. as you buy more they send additional temp charges. So the others make some sense but you will know when you recieve the first statement. It may be temps it may be charges you will see when the statement comes in or is posted.

My bet - the $300 was the first temp charge to make sure the card was good (credit limit), the others perhaps daily after the balance exceeded the 300. Better to find a problem before the last morning. If you add up all the temp charges the come to about $508 that leaves about $80 (last 24 hours or so gift shop, drinks, wine ?) that was included in the final $590 bill.

I always have a bunch of temp charges when I get off the ship and check online.

Does that seem to add up Tammy

Hmmm.....I don't recall there ever being a "temp charge" on our credit card the last time we cruised. I always thought they put them on "debit cards" only. We never took close notice, but will the next time. You are probably right.

They will never show up on your statement and vanish online normally a couple of days after you return.

I checked our bank statement periodically through the cruise.

On the first day we got hit with a 500 dollar charge (I put alot of things on the card that first day...), then we had something like a 60 an 80 a 40 and a 30 dollar charge over the next few days. When I got back the total of all the little charges equaled a bit over 1000. The monday after we got back they had all disapeared and we were left with just a total charge of a little over $1000.

Hope that helps.

Because I have a tendency to forget what I purchase, I made a point to keep each and every receipt on our cruise last month. Then I got a copy of the bill the night before we left and matched everything up. There were a few beer charges that were charged as 4.54, then removed and added back as 5.54 because we added a tip. Other than that, we had NO trouble with our bill at all but I KNEW I would freak out if I saw the bill and out of nowhere, there was $800 on there and couldn't remember what was purchased.

Not that this helps you now but I found it very helpful to keep the receipts and then keep track so that I wasn't shocked when the bill came. Also, by doing it the night before, I could settle up any discrepancies before the morning rush.

And despite my lack of a review (too lazy), we had an absolutely FABULOUS time on the Dawn. No complaints (other than obscenely rude cruisers in Cagney's) at all.

When we returned from the Dawn on October 19th, we had several temporary charges as well. Give it a few days Tammy and recheck. Ours were gone within 5 business days I believe.

Geesh...with the advent of the internet we all get to see these things now so quickly. These temp charges (and we get them from alot of different vendors) drive me nuts.

Ciao all,

Thank you everyone who responded to my concerns about the billing.

I checked my credit card again this afternoon, and a few of the charges have disappeared.

The other 2 that are still remaining do say pending, so hopefully they'll drop off too.

This never happened to me before.

Thanks again all.

When I checked my account online when I got back from a cruise last April, I also had the big charge, or authorization, at the beggining of the cruise. Then I had $1.00 charges, or authorizations, each day after, until the last few days when the charges, or authorizations, tried to stay ahead of what I was actually charging. It all worked out correct in the end.

For any NCL executive types reading this, I seem to remember on prior cruises that we got a preliminary statement of charges more than a day before the cruise ended. This gave us a chance to look at it without pressure and reconcile it against our own records.

On the last cruise (Sun, Oct 15) there was never any bill until quite late the night we were packing and putting our suitcases in the hall. This put a lot of pressure on us to reconcile it and go down to the purser desk with questions while getting set to debark, which was a somewhat unpleasant way to end a nice cruise.

fin: I always go down about a day before the end of the cruise and ask for a "preliminary bill." The pursers desk has always cheerfully provided me on. I can then go and check over it during the day. Then the only things I need to check when the final bill comes are the last day items.

On the POA in 2004, they had charged my daughter and adult shore excursion price. A wonderful person a the pursers desk helped me out. It took a couple of days to get it changed and she was becoming as frustrated with the shore excursion people as me. Finally, she took the bill with me in tow over to the shore excursion desk and ordered them to correct the price or she was going to delete the whole charge for the shore excursion. It got changed!

Everyone should ask for a preliminary bill before the end of their cruise. Don't expect the ship to bring you one.

Shoreguy: Was it an 8 day cruise? Could the missing $80.00 be the service charge? 10 x 8 = $80.

On the 12 day cruises, we did get a preliminary statement of charges more than a day before the cruise ended.

On 7 day cruises, just the night or AM before the cruise ended.

A good thing...my last NCL cruise...I was charged all of my (off the ship) charges on the next bill.

NCL charges came up the following month.

May have had to do with my statement date?

Whatever...it was good for me:)

Hi Tammy,

I just came back from the Spirit on the same day as you.

I agree with all of the fellow posters. Without knowing what you actually charged onboard, I would guess that the 300 is the pre-authorization on the card and the other charges are your daily total charges that the cruise line runs each night to ensure you have an available balance. I don't know if you used a debit card or a credit card. I used a debit card for my sign and sail. I checked a few times online during the cruise and I had charges every day on my bank account under "pending charges". It read 10.00 Norweigan Spirit, 4.50 Norweigan Spirit, etc. They all dropped off and then the final bill posted.

There was a couple on our cruise who was removed from the ship in Antigua because of credit card fraud! I think running the charges though every day helps prevent things like that happening on a frequent basis.

The Onboard credit desk can run a printout of your charges at any time.
