My husband is now eligable for AARP. He is planning on joining it and I saw it had benefits to travel but link didn't give me anything on details. I am wondering if it will help at all with traveling. Thaanks ahead of time for your replies :)

I've used it, but can't say there are any really great savings. Usually, it amounts to about a 10% - 15% discount. I've used it booking cars, Amtrak, hotels...can't remember if the airlines honor it or not. I also belong to Triple A, which gives you the same discounts. You can only use one, so I let my AARP expire.

There are AARP insurance plans that I've heard are worth while, but I don't know anything firsthand about these.

We have both AARP and AAA memberships. AARP is a lot cheaper; it would be silly to join AAA just for the travel discounts unless you travel a lot more than we do. Most places that give this sort of discount will do it for either AAA or AARP, but some places only take one or the other.

AARP has their own portal into one of the big travel websites now, and are promising some extra discount, I think. I haven't really checked that out yet...

Thanks everyone :). We weren't joining just for the travel discounts..although any discount is a nice bonus to me, but for the information and ability to voice with them for changes for *cough* mature ppl treatment lol. Its nice added feature if even all we get is a bit of a discount on a car rental but a added cruise discount would be nice :). Not sure if we could use it though since we already get past cruiser and veteran discount. Not sure they would allow 3 lol but maybe if it was a small discount they may on carnival.

They will only allow one discount and the Military discount is much larger than the AARP or AAA ones. I was told by a PVP that the Military Discount is the same as what they give Carnival employees.

We are members of AARP and have used AARP to book hotels and rental cars and it does save a little. I married a wonderful man who is 17 yrs older than I am. I took a girls trip to Gulf Shores and I booked the hotel using my AARP card. Even tho I am 47 I have my own card cause my DH is a member.

Anyway I got to the hotel to check in and the guy at the front desk is looking at me funny. Finally he says look I don't care if you are a member of AARP, but I have to know just for my own curiosity-I won't ask your age but no way are you 55. I looked at him and said you're correct and it pays to be married to a geezer. I came home and told my DH and we had a good laugh. The geezer thing has kind of stuck. I call him my geezer. He is in no way even close to a geezer and probably could give most 30 yr olds a run for their money.

So remember you can get your own card and use the benefits also even if your DH is not traveling with you.

Love the geezer story! I had the same experience since DH was eligible to join way before I was.

As mentioned before, usually the AARP discount and AAA are about the same. But we do have our car insurance through AARP and it is a much better rate. Since the annual membership dues are not that much, it definitely is a money saver. We also have a small health insurance policy with them since we own our own business. No one that we've found has a very comprehensive policy at an affordable price for the self employed, but it's better than nothing I guess...

Carnival once offered AARP discounts, but I think they have changed that. At any rate, the past cruiser discount was actually better than the AARP rate when I inquired - and was told I could use only one discount per cruise.

Carnival has senior discounts on some cruises at some times. On my December cruise, it offers about $150 off per person for oceanview or better cabins (no discount on interior cabins). If you want to try it out, the discount code is PSE. At least one person in the cabin has to be 55. AARP membership is not required.

That will probably be the discount we use when we finally talk my mother into going. She is eligable for the senior citizen discount. My father has passed away but was a veteran..wonder if she gets that discount with being a widow of a vet? anyone know?

You are eligable for AARP at age 50, however most hotel sites claim you have to be 55 or older for the discounts. Has anyone ever been refused the AARP discount because they are not 55?

I am 51 and have been an AARP member since last year. I've never had anyone question my age; they took the card and gave me my discount.
