Sorry, Another Dreaded Motion Sickness Question

DH suffers from motion sickness. He's only been on pne cruise and used the patch. The patch worked for the motion sickness but made him sooooo drowsy, our night-life was non-exsistant. I hear it affects everyone differently. I think I may get him the non-drowsey dramamine this time. What if he takes the non-drowsey dramamine and it doesn't work, can he stop taking the dramamine and switch to the patch (since he knows it works)?

I get seasick very easily, and I have used the patch with great success, but it made me so thirsty. I tried Bonine & that worked great & you only have to take it every 12 hours. We had a very calm cruise & Bonine was all I took. Have the patch in case of rough sea, tho:) ! You can switch back to the patch, but don't take the dramamine/bonine while on the patch.

I also have a very sensitive stomach and have used Bonine with great success. My DH and I take it at night before bed and we are fine all day long. We have cruised with some pretty rough seas and have never gotten sick with Bonine. Have a great cruise :)

I spoke to a Pharmacist about Dramamine and Bonine...Bonine is Mecliizine which is what doctor's perscribe for Vertigo. I have a friend who has motion sickness and suggest to her to start taking the Bonine the night before we cruise and every night we are on the cruise (this came from a good friend of mine) and has been very successful. It has even worked on some pretty rocky seas.

Have never been seasick before but our last cruise to Hawaii the first night out was rough. We took Bonine and did start feeling better (but now will take a day before just in case). It did not make us sleepy - we took it at night and were fine during the day. Stopped after we got our sea legs and were fine for the rest of the trip.

It sounds like your DH is affected the same way I am.

When I use the patch, I am slightly drowsy. I don't feel like I could nod off at any time, but sleep comes very easily.

Dramamine knocks me on the floor.

Less-Drowsy Dramamine and Bonine are both Meclazine ... no difference between these pills. Meclazine is the generic name. LD Dramamine and Bonine are brand names. Both of these also knock me out --- less than regular dramamine, but definitely more than the patch. A lot of people take them with no bad effects, but I am super, super tired.

Your DH could try taking 1/2 of a meclazine in the evening before bed. This works for most people. If I do this, I can't drink alcohol the next day and I am very drowsy, but he may have better luck.

Now if he uses the meclazine and he is too sleepy and motion sick, he can't simply slap on the patch. You need to begin using it before you get aboard ... but it may be worth a try.

Two other things you may want to try are Seabands (available at the drug store), and ginger tablets. My mother swears by Seabands, and my niece used ginger tablets when the patch made her lose sight in one eye. If your DH does not have any heart issues and is not taking blood thinners, the ginger tablets may be the best choice.

As a super motion sickee ... I truly do believe that it is primarily psychosomatic, but it is tough to break that cycle. Hope this helps your DH find something that works right for him.

If the patch seems to be too much dosing, try using SCOPACE TABS, It is .4mg every 8 hours and you can take 2, if necessary. This will allow you to modify the dosage. This is only available by perscription. It is what the US Navy and NASA use for motion sickness. 40 tablets cost about 25.00 at Wal-Greens. Fair Seas everyone.

You may want DH to take some Bonine (or generic) for a day or two on a weekend when he is not working to see if it has any ill effects.

Charlie

I think this is good advice. Each person will react differently and it is possible that the combination of taking Bonine or other similar products will bring on more tiredness than say just taking the medication but I would try this suggestion. Also, the key to taking Bonine or other related prodcts is to take them before you start to feel seasick. It is important not to weight until you start feeling ill or you will likely feel more tired.

Is it true that you should not drink alcohol when taking any of these medicines?

Gail

I believe that the packages meclazine will carry warnings about alcohol, driving and operating heavy machinery. I have used both bonine and generic types and had no problems with a drink or two.
