I have been reading alot to learn about cruising for I will be going on my first in May 07' and I read that you don't have to have a passport until Jan. 2008 unless you are traveling by air to Mexico, etc. Then I called carnival and they did agree. I just want an opinion. I am kind of worried and think I need to spend the money and get the passports. I just want everything to go smooth. Any feedback would be appreciated.

If you want to fly down to Cancun or Cozumel or any other Mexican city after January, 2007, you'll be required to have a passport. So...why not just bit the bullet and get one now. It's good for 10 years. The cost per passport is roughly $100 right now, so for only $10/year you have all of the documentation that you need in one easy laminated place. Trust me, it will give you peace of mind to have it done with. If you wait til the last minute to get one, you may not be able to get it quick enough.

I agree with Debbie and it sounds like you've pretty much made up your mind to go ahead and get a passport now. What bothers me is that the regulations state you don't need a passport if traveling by sea but you do need one if you are traveling by air. If something should happen while you are cruising (God forbid) that makes it necessary to fly home, it could be a hassle. It's so much easier to travel with a passport that I'd go ahead and get one now since you have so much time.

I personally chose to go ahead and get mine because I was thinking that when the requirement is actually put into effect that there will be so many trying to get them that it would be slow and that the demand might cause processing fees to go up. It is good for 10 years so you are looking at approximately 10 dollars per year. Then you will have it on hand if you decide to fly somewhere on short notice.

Yep...I agree you should DO IT too!

My husband and I recently did ours. It was after I had cruised to the Mexican Riviera and had no problems but then I just got back from Cancun and we had just sent off for our passports the week before I left...all of a sudden I realized that my birth certificate (the original) was sent in with the passport docs.

I FREAKED OUT for a minute thinking..OMG...I need that birth certificate to fly to Cancun. Well, luckily for me...I was able to get a new one the same day. But some folks arent that lucky.

I still had problems flying to and from because I did NOT have my marriage license with me...

Man, I'm SOOO glad we just went ahead and ordered them... Seems like it will be SO MUCH EASIER!!

It ended up costing us $225 for both of us! YIKES! More that we thought it would be but now its DONE!

Good luck to you! I'm glad I wont have to worry about that anymore.

Shouldn't need anything but the passport. Lots of folks take their DL, or ID as an extra precaution, but that's a personal preference.

I still take my dl on cruises because for instance in Nassau, when you need to go back to the ship the port authorities want to see your s&s card and a photo id and I leave my passport on board (keep a copy with me). But I think a passport is easier all around and you never know when you might need it, like if you win a last minute trip to Paris or something:D
