Taxi from Cruz Bay Ferry Terminal to Trunk Bay?

What has been the experience of others on the availability of taxis to get you back to Cruz Bay from Trunk Bay? Someone recently posted that there weren't many taxis waiting around at Trunk, and this has us a little worried. Thanks!

Carnivalcruisejunkie - thanks for the info!

Sammy - I was thinking about that too. That would have us worried as well. Doing the Trunk Bay thing on your own (via Red Hook) works out to only $18 cheaper total for two people than the ship's tour. If you go via dntwn Charlotte Amalie - it works out to $34 cheaper for two. We kinda wanted to do it on our own because that way you can have more time to do other things or basically just have more control over what you are doing versus a tour. But if you have to wait for taxis or scramble to get one, the $34 savings isn't worth it, I think. We might just end up taking the ship's tour then we don't have to worry about missing a ferry or waiting for a taxi that never comes. I guess I will have to sacrifice a bit of my shopping time after all...

We were there on 11/1 and our experience was the same as wrp96. There were several taxis waiting at Trunk Bay to take us back to Cruz Bay. I would agree that you need to decide how long you want to be at Trunk Bay, or whatever beach you choose. To us, an hour and a half would not have been long enough. Trunk Bay is beautiful. I would also suggest going right away in the morning as you arrive before the crowds, even though it never got really crowded.

I have been to Trunk Bay and I know the ship tour is short. You see them come and go and you are still enjoying the beach. This is an easy trip to do. There will be others from your ship and just follow the lead. An hour or so on Trunk Bay won't be enough. They run this every day and have it down. They will know what to do for you. In fact you'll barely have to ask. The man on the shore will ask if you want the ferry to St. Jonh and when you get to Cruz Bay they will be loading the jitneys and off you go. The return is easy. This was the first excusion we did on our own and so very glad we learned. In the passing years we have booked most of our excursions and been more than happy. I find a majority of the ship excursions are only half a day. Sometimes you just want to be out there longer.

sunshine - I appreciate your advice but doing it on our own - we would only have 1 1/2 max at the beach anyways because I have to have a certain amount of time to shop and we have never been to Paradise Point and want to leave about 1 1/2 hours for that (to have a nice cocktail or a bite to eat and enjoy the view). DH and I have been over every possible scenario - taking the ferry from dntwn and taking it from Red Hook and the ship works out the best every time. I do agree with you though, if someone wanted more beach time - to definitely go on your own. By the way - do you know if there are beach chairs at Trunk Bay you can rent or do you just have to lay on the sand? Thanks!!

There are beach chairs to rent, plus snorkel equipment etc. One note though. The actual cost of the rentals is pretty low (I think it was around $10) but you have to make a large deposit, so either bring a large amount of cash for the deposit or a credit card you feel comfortable using for the deposit amount. When we went we got 1 set of snorkel gear and 1 chair, and I believe the deposit was around $75, but when we returned it we actually only ended up spending less than $15.

wrp96 - thanks for the info. $75 for a chair? What do they think - that we are going to carry it away with us-lol? I wonder if they take travellers cheques. I wouldn't feel comfortable giving our credit card. We don't really use our credit card at all when travelling as we are Canadian and don't want to pay the exchange. I guess we will have to make sure we have some cash. I wonder if they charge double for two chairs? I have never heard of that before! Thanks for the heads up!

We rented a chair, for $10, and was asked for a $25 deposit. Must have been cheaper cause we didn't rent any snorkeling stuff. Brought our own with us. Did use our CC for the deposit and had no problem. I can certainly understand though being apprehensive about doing so.

The $75 was not just for the chair but also for the snorkel equipment. We had to pay upfront the cost of the rentals PLUS put down an amount for the deposit. We paid the actual rental fees in cash but left a credit card number for the deposit. They don't actually charge it unless you don't return the items (and yes that is the reason for the deposit because people have been known to walk off with them in the past).

Glad to know that they don't want a $75 deposit for a chair! Thanks for all the info.

Bimms - No, we are not on the Jewel. We are going on Celebrity's Constellation in March. Back to back's are always great - have a wonderful time and be sure to post about all your excursions.

I was in at Trunk Bay 2 weeks ago and rented a snorkeling vest. It was $5 plus a $25 deposit.

We did this excursion on our own and had no problems getting there or back. There were 3 taxis waiting at Trunk when we were ready to go back. There weren't that many people on this beach that day so only 1 taxi was needed when we were ready to leave at 2:30. The driver did wait until it was full before we left so we ended up leaving Trunk at 2:40. Got back to Cruz Bay at 2:50.
