IslandJim Posted November 11, 2006 #1 Share Posted November 11, 2006 If your ship is stopping in Cozumel, you should include insect repellent for the exposed parts of your body no matter what activities you decide to undertake. Mosquitoes don't know if they are getting blood from a jungle enthusiast or a diamond purchaser. This illness is very difficult and entirely AVOIDABLE, if you will simply protect yourself. This is not an epidemic by any stretch of the imagination, but it presents a health situation for travelers the same as for residents. Enjoy your trip and return to your homes healthy. * * * * * From regional newspaper, Por Esto! In Cozumel 50 cases of dengue fever exist, of which 45 are classic and 5 hemorrágicos, brought to light by the Director of Health in the municipality, Juvenal Zetina Thorny. In spite of the fact that in all the state an epidemic of fever exists, in Cozumel while the figures have enlarged in comparison with other years; they are not alarming. The director of Health in the municipality, Juvenal Zetina, declared at this time 45 cases of classical fever exist and 5 of hemorrágico type. These are greater figures in comparison with previous years. Nevertheless, this should not alarm the citizenship, but they should NOT stop taking the necessary precautions not to be infected. It indicated that the great majority of these cases have been presented in people over 45 years of age; since they are the most prone to contract this illness. As for the zones where is more favorable the contagion in the island, Zetina said that the residencial colonies Emiliano Zapata, 10 of April, San Gervasio and San Miguel I and II is where the campaign has been emphasized most to avoid the spread of this illness. Adding that Wednesday gave start the seventh cycle of nebulización (fogging) as a group with the permanent campaign called "Clean Patio", which is carried out in coordination with the Direction of Ecology, the Sector Health and Ecoz. To conclude, the director of Health exhorted to the citizenship Cozumeleña to collaborate so that the cases of fever don't increase, by maintaining their patios clean and permitting the entrance to the brigade members so that they can revise the indications that give rise to the mosquito problems. rotty2 Posted November 11, 2006 #2 Share Posted November 11, 2006 IslandJim, Thanks for the "heads up" we will be there in about 2 weeks. Are there any areas that are worse than others? Right now we are deciding between; Occidental Grand Cozumel, Nachi Cocom, The Reef Club, El Cozumeleno, or Cozumel Palace. Thanks
LHP Posted November 11, 2006 #3 Share Posted November 11, 2006 Thanks Jim. We will definately add that extra layer of protection. Why take the risk when the prevention is so easy!!
IslandJim Posted November 11, 2006 Author #4 Share Posted November 11, 2006 The news mentions certain residencial colonies they are dedicating extra care to but those are areas you visitors wouldn't likely reach in your day visits. Mosquitos fly however and any area close to jungle, mangroves and even beaches get these very little mosquitos. They are difficult to see actually, but they carry ice picks. A simple, but thorough application of "Off" of similar repelant will be sufficient. These are not super mosquitos, they only carry a dreaded feaver that takes weeks to overcome generally. Ears, neck and face; apply the stuff everywhere you are exposed. Incidentally, these mosquitos are mostly out in the early morning and early evening (especially around dusk) and they mostly fly and attack at ankle altitude.
