What is the advantage of taking the Carcross Bus/Rail vs Yukon Bus/Rail?

Ok - these Carcross train posts are making me dizzy!

My DH & I have never been to Alaska. We are doing a 7 day land tour before our 7 day cruise from Anchorage to Vancouver in July 2007, so we will be seeing some of Alaska prior to Skagway.

This is the website I am looking at: http://www.skagwaysbesttour.com/carcross.htm

We REALLY want to ride the train, but....here is my question: What is the advantage of going all the way to Carcross on the train? It looks like if you go the Yukon route, you get off the train and ride a bus to Carcross anyway. Is it worth spending our whole day in Skagway on the Carcross trip?

Murray, BQueen, anyone else....give my your input PLEASE!!

thanks,

Julie

If you are a rail fan, the farther you go in a train the better. This is also a historic route. The train routing is different than the Klondike Highway too. The train is a lot slower. Only you can decide what is your preferred mode of travel.

The train to Carcross is for people who really love trains - it's really that simple. The WP&YR narrow-guage line has always been regarded as one of the top 10 rail trips on earth for railfans, and this extension will be drawing them from all over the world. The Alaska Railroad, OTOH, doesn't make the list at all (not even the Anchorage-Seward section).

Sounds like from what you have said, this is taken because of popularity (being such a famous stretch of narrow gauge) and by railfans.

So if we choose to do the train all the way to Carcross, is the scenery spectacular? Do you stop anywhere along the way that you can get off and get back on again? Or is it just a "train ride" to say you have traveled it and gone all the way to the Yukon?

thanks - I am just sooo confused on which trip to take and of course want to take the "right" one, whichever that is. But I don't want to miss out on the opportunity to maybe do other fun things in Skagway either.

Decisions, decisions.....

You stop at Bennett Station/Lake Bennett for a (I think) 1.5-2hr lunch stay. Other than that I don't think there are any stops.

If you look at this map (see link) you can see where the road runs for the Yukon Bus and Rail, and where the train runs in comparison.

If you are looking to book the Carcross run, do so asap - apparently some days have been booked full or been taken by cruiselines already. Check out the other threads for more info.

It's number 1 on the National Railroad Historical Society list. :)
