woodyginger Posted November 12, 2006 #1 Share Posted November 12, 2006 This is our first time crusing with RC, only been on Princess. We are leaving DEC. 3 for 7 days then we are staying on ship for another 7 Days. Eastern and Western Caribbean. If anyone has been on this ship lately could you please tell me what nights are formal and are menu's the same or is there one night that food is best. We normally only eat in main dinning room on formal nights . But since we are doing 2 cruises back to back we are only dressing on one night first cruist and one night second cruise. The reason I'm asking is it is our anniversay cruise and I need to let my Travel agent request a table for 2 but not sure which nights. Also if anyone remembers menu. Thanks for any help also if any one has an opinion on this ship please share your thoughts. Thanks
Sue L Posted November 13, 2006 #2 Share Posted November 13, 2006 Explorer is a wonderful ship with a ton of stuff to do. I was on the 5 day to Bermuda so my menus wouldn't help you. But I would suggest going to Portofino's one or two nights. There is a 20$pp surcharge but it is well worth it. There is a link in my signature to pictures from the ship. My cabin was 8328 and E1 on the hump, which if you are not familiar with is the middle section of the ship that bumps out. You will love the ship and the bedding is all brand new. crisndeefromde Posted November 13, 2006 #3 Share Posted November 13, 2006 When we were on her the end of April we were going 7 day western. The formal nights were Monday night and Friday night which were the two days at sea. We will be getting on her the 10th!!!! Happy Anniversary!!!! Sheepdog Posted November 13, 2006 #5 Share Posted November 13, 2006 The Explorer is my favourite ship (Canadian...hence the spelling !! )....but it's been about 4 years. We've since been on "another ship", but continually talked about the Explorer !!! Does that tell you how wonderful it was ???? I agree...do try Portofino's...from all reports,it's money well spent. Can't remember menus, but was pleased with the food and all the crew...great cruise. I wish you the same !! Sharon:)

lv2bcruzin Posted November 13, 2006 #7 Share Posted November 13, 2006 The Explorer is my favorite RCI ship by far. There is so much to do and the staff is wonderful. The food is hit and miss like all cruises and especially with RCI and if you go in knowing that it won't be a deal breaker for you if your not overwhelmingly happy with the food. You have to try Johnny Rockets which IMO has some of the best cheeseburgers around. The formal night for us was on the 3rd to last day. Here are some Explorer photos. wrp96 Posted November 13, 2006 #9 Share Posted November 13, 2006 One thing, it sounds like you only want your agent to request the table for 2 for only the nights you will be in the dining room. RCCL does not work that way. You have the same table the entire cruise, so it doesn't matter if you will be in the dining room or not, you will have a table assigned to you. Also, any table size requests made before the cruise are just that, requests, they make no guarantees. Definitely have your TA request a table for 2 for you, but once you get onboard go talk to the maitre'd about getting you a table for 2. As to the menus, usually there is a different menu each night - but they follow the same schedule from cruise to cruise, occasionally varying it. Your best bet is once you get onboard asking the maitre'd what nights are the formal nights and asking to see the menus.
vmom Posted November 13, 2006 #10 Share Posted November 13, 2006 RCCL and Princess work quite differently with their dining. There is huge shortage of tables for 2 on RCCL ships and many people who request them don't get them. Since tables are assigned for the whole cruise, 7 days, and you only want to use the table for 1 day of the 7, it really would be unfair to get a table for 2 and not use it the other 6 days while many people who have requested a table for 2 won't be able to be accomadated. Instead, make reservations at Chops or Portofinos for the night you want to celebrate.
js Posted November 14, 2006 #11 Share Posted November 14, 2006 We sailed on many RCCL ships but only sailed the EOS twice. We really like the ship. We also are thinking about sailing her again July 08 to Bermuda. Does anyone know, is Bermuda only 5 night? We want to do a 7 night. Thank you. Unless they change it, the Explorer was alterating between the 5 day Bermuda and a 9 day eastern caribbean. If you want to go to bermuda for 7 I believe the Empress out of Philly is 7 day and possibly the granduer out of Bermuda. Sye

Sue in your pictures the beds look like the same ol hump in the middle sagging on the sides beds with the same ol ugly print bedspread. I was under the impression that the bedding included the new white comfortors with the dark green throws? we are sailing on the EOS on the third of December and we are also doing the b2b like the OP and are very interested in knowing. Thanks for the info!! drbndeb!!
