Tip at Specialty Restaurant

Do you consider the gratuity on any wine you order in determining any additional tip. I ate at the Sterling on the CB, and ordered a bottle of wine that included a gratuity of about $20. I thought that, plus the cover charge, was adequate.

I don't and feel that if one can afford to buy a Robert Mondavi Napa Reserve, Caymus Special Selection Cabernets or the Opus or the Dom, they can afford to give an extra Hamilton or two as the wine gratuity is split 50-50, half going to the servers and half going to the auto-tip pot.

We just came off the Caribbean Princess - we ate in Sabatini's the first nite (not many diners, therefore lots of time to talk to the wait staff). At end of meal when bill was presented, we asked where to write in extra gratuity above the $20 pp service charge and the waiter told us "you can write in extra if you like, but none of us here will personally see that money." He explained that the $20 pp. meal charge and our daily $10 pp. "hotel service charge" formed the basis for their "tips". He said any extra contributions went into a general pool that helps to compensate all staff for those who do not pay the daily $10 pp. service charge. Instead of tipping extra, we took down the Sabatini's wait staff names and wrote them up on a "You Made the difference" card that Princess left in our cabins. Apparently, these cards help staff earn extra time off and help with employee evaluations....

Enjoy your cruise!

This doesn't sound right. As long as you have left the auto-tip in place, you've tipped in the specialty restaurant. If you wish to leave an additional tip, I'm pretty sure they get to keep the tip just as your cabin steward or dining room staff get to keep an extra tip. I could be wrong. This is different from the wine tip which is not included in the auto-tip.

Maybe we can give the extra tip in cash and hand it directly to the server. Would the server still has to put this "cash" into a general pot to share with others? BTW, what is a Hamilton tip?

Check the pictures on your US bills, if you have different denominations you will find the answer.

I agree and think that Luv was misinformed. They get to keep the extra tip as long as you leave the autotip in place. When you leave the speciality restaurant, they will put the extra tip in an envelope with your name and cabin number written on it. At the end of the cruise if you did not remove the autotip, they will get the envelope back. If you did remove the autotip, the envelope goes into the pool. Also the wine tip is included. The servers get half and half goes into the pool.

I'm afraid the notion that removing the auto-tip to give cash penalizes your steward is a bit of ongoing Princess board folklore, and the new disembarkation information clarifies this:

The discretionary Hotel charge and any cash provided up to the standard $10 per day will be shared amongst those staff who help provide and support your cruise experience, including the wait staff, stateroom stewards and accommodations staff, buffet stewards, galley staff, laundry staff and others.

In other words, whether you leave $0 auto-tip and $10 cash or $10 auto-tip an $0 cash or $0 auto-tip and $100 cash, $10 will be shared. No matter how you choose to tip, $10 of the tip will be shared, and any excess is kept by the individual.

I have heard so many conflicting stories about what happens with cash tips, that I don't know what to believe. I have also heard different versions of how the auto tip is divided.

It would be nice if Princess would make that information public.

I also wish Princess would make it so you cannot remove the auto tip. I know this would upset a few people here, who like to remove it and hand out cash. But for every person who hands out an equivalent amount in cash, I bet there are two who remove it and don't tip at all.

To me the simplest way to do it would be to make the auto tip non-removable and any extra cash you hand out could be kept by whoever you gave it to.

Under my scheme, if someone has a legitimate complaint about service, they could file a complaint with Princess. After an investigation, if Princess agreed with the passenger, they could refund a portion of the auto tip, which would come out of the crewman in question's share of tips.

BTW, what is a Hamilton tip?

It's the money used by guys who still think it's cool to wink at you while shaking your hand.

And who think large, gold nugget pinky rings look good.

And used car salesman......I think.

:p
