JRA382 Posted November 18, 2006 #1 Share Posted November 18, 2006 We are flying into Houston the night before our cruise which leaves 3/17, we fly into Hobby (cheaper..southwest), and staying at the springhill suites (recommended on this board), my question is what is the best way to get to Galveston for a family of four and then back to Houston on Thur (3/22). Our flight leaves at 12:30pm from Hobby 1) will this be enough time? I looked at Coach USA and for round trip tickets it is 196.00 for 2 adults 2 two kids, but I noticed that when I went to purchase them it had a caption that not to book flights out of Hobby until 2:00pm. If anyone can help I would appreciate it. GO BUCKS!!!! Beat Michigan!!!!
Mrsg324 Posted November 18, 2006 #2 Share Posted November 18, 2006 Check wth Enterprise, I've heard people say that they have rented cars & dropped them off in Galveston at another Enterprise. I know I've rented from Enterprise in the past not to put the miles on my car when traveling & the rates were under 20 per day. YOu could do the same on getting back to the airport. Sure would be a lot cheaper than 196.00. Heck I think a cab would even be cheaper than that.
FunCruiser56 Posted November 18, 2006 #3 Share Posted November 18, 2006 We used a limo service that way your not waiting for everyone else on the bus. Limo will pick you up at your hotel and be waiting for you when you get off the ship. We paid around $160 for round trip limo. Our kids were thrilled! Mrsg324 Posted November 18, 2006 #4 Share Posted November 18, 2006 YIKES axe my idea. I just called them. It is 80.95 to do a one way rental. There is a 40 drop fee involved. Then if you rent it for the entire week is is 207 plus you would have to pay for parking. I checked Hertz also, they were even more I called yellow cab 85 each way. I say go with Funcruisers suggestion & get a limo. It's cheaper & the family will enjoy it much more.
WindinmySails Posted November 18, 2006 #5 Share Posted November 18, 2006 I just rented Oct 22 and 29. The cost was 32.00 from Houston to Galveston and then 89.00 from Galveston to Houston. That was an Economy rate. They did not charge me the drop off fee in Galveston. Unless you need a car, I think the Limo sounds like a neat idea, and I think if I did not need a car for the evening, that would be the way to go, considering time is lost doing all the rental paper work, picking up the car, standing in line etc.
L & D in MKE Posted November 19, 2006 #6 Share Posted November 19, 2006 I used Enterprise from Houston to Galveston - they said there was a 40.00 drop off fee, but when I booked it, they didn't charge me. The one way rental was a little more expensive from Galveston to Houston - not sure why, but certainly MUCH less than transfers for 4 people. You can't book this with any other rental company. Good luck!
marimojo Posted November 19, 2006 #7 Share Posted November 19, 2006 Galveston Limo - I've used them before. They have a small bus that takes you directly to the ship and picks you back up - the price is 50 r/t for adult and 25 r/t for children - still kind of expensive... but they are reliable. Here is their website. You are cutting it kind of short with a 12:30 flight. You should be okay, but its going to be close. http://galvestonlimousineservice.com/hobby.html

blyle Posted November 19, 2006 #9 Share Posted November 19, 2006 Here is a little secret for those renting cars in Houston. We have the highest airport rental taxes in the US. If you rent from the airport location your taxes equal the rental amount basically. So rent from an off site location, they will bring you the car and you will save big bucks. I found this out when doing research for those coming for a wedding. Apparently it is a well know fact not to rent from the airport location! I would get the springhill suites to let you use the free shuttle to get to a rental car location that is not at the airport. We have them all over town. Good Luck!! JRA382 Posted November 19, 2006 Author #10 Share Posted November 19, 2006 Thanks, I actually was able to reserve one way Houston to Galveston (2 day rental) and Galveston to Houston. There was a drop off fee of 40.00 but for everything it came in a little over $100, which for 4 people I thought was reasonable. (I also had some coupons...20% off)
Grandma Dazzles Posted November 19, 2006 #11 Share Posted November 19, 2006 It was a few years ago, but we also used Galveston Limo (small bus) not an actual limo. They were excellent - would recommend and use again.
Smiling Cruiser Posted November 20, 2006 #12 Share Posted November 20, 2006 :) We Just got back from a Galveston cruise 2 weeks ago. Rented a one way from Enterprise at IAH-drove to the Marriott near Hobby and spent the night-didn't want to drive for 90 to 120 minutes in the AM-too anxious to board early. Turned the car in at Galveston, at the end of I-45. (Drop off passengers and luggage and bring the car to the office. They bring you back to the ship.) It took my husband approx 15 min. from when he left me until he returned. The office is only four miles from the pier. It cost 17.95 plus tax (total $25.00 plus gas) for a KIA. There was NO drop off fee even though we were told on the phone that there would be. The representative at the airport told us it was considered part of the greater Houston area and therefore no fee. We didn't argue-left with a smile. There is an Enterprise office at the pier so you could probably book a car for the return trip rather than keeping the car for a week and paying parking fees. You might need a bigger car for four people and luggage but it should still be a good deal. (We chose to take the ship's transportation back to the airport since we were going to IAH and that is a longer ride than Hobby.) Try booking directly through Enterprise's office at the Airport to get the correct information. Good luck, have a great vacation, and let us know how things turned out.:) Happy sails to you-
