Taking luggage on when you embark?

The opposite of my other post today...

If you have luggage you can easily carry yourself, do you ever just take it on with you yourself on embarkation day? I am going to have a carry on plus a pullman suitcase with wheels. I can easily carry them myself.

However, the other issue is, if we board on the early side, can we drop them off in our room?

Thanks!

What you take on board with you must be able to fit through the x-ray machine that is the size they use at the airport. Last cruise we were not allowed into our cabin until about 1 p.m. It is easy to send your luggage onto the ship; I wouldn't carry-on anything but my valuables and whatever I plan on wearing for the afternoon.

IMHO it is much easier to check your luggage when arriving at the port. That way you can start enjoying your cruise without having to pull along your luggage. They will deliver it to your cabin a little later in the day.

I now usually carry my own luggage off if possible. To me that is much easier. Again, it depends on the amount of luggage that each of you have and if you can manage it without holding up guests behind you.:)

As I understand it, if the luggage fits through the scanner, and if you want to haul it around with you until the rooms are open, you are free to do that. Just because most of us wouldn't bother, doesn't make it impossible. Most ships allow you to take your luggage off early when debarking. Nancy

So,

If i am understanding this correctly..

You MUST check it when boarding, however when leaving do you need to put it out or can you carry it with you?

... pardon my ignorance...

Thanks!

If it won't fit in the standard carry on Xray scanner..........you need to check it when boarding.

There's one more thing I might add. If you check take a small bag or carry-on with you onto the ship, you really don't have to drag it around until your cabin is available. Usually one of the greeters at the entrance of the ship invites you to leave your bag with them to watch so you don't have to drag it throughout the ship. I think they have their self-interest at heart. Three thousand passengers dragging heavy carry-ons everywhere on the ship can actually do a lot of damage scuffing up walls and so on.

My last cruise on the Sov. I brought my suitcase & carry-on with me. My suitcase was 14" high when laid flat & BARELY made it thru the X-Ray mach. In all honesty I don't think I would do that again. We were lucky as I had a friend on a B2B & I was able to leave my suitcase in her room. Even on wheels it was pretty heavy to schep around.

But really - what would be the point of bringing all of your luggage with you when you first embark? Unlike disembarking, which some people feel they must do in order to get to the airport on time, what benefit is there to dragging it around that first afternoon?

I think they want you to check your bags when you embark so that they can scan for alcohol and such items. On the Mariner we didn't have much trouble getting on the luggage but on the Freedom it took forever... I ended up taking my luggage from the hallway by the elevator. I needed clothes for dinner and wasn't going to wait any longer for them to bring it to my cabin. I have easy to spot luggage, pink with pink locks!!!
