Hoosiermama Posted November 20, 2006 #1 Share Posted November 20, 2006 We will be on the Century in March 07 with 40 people who will be attending a wedding onboard. There will be 8 gay couples on this cruise, including my daughter and her partner. How gay friendly is Cozumel? My daughter and her partner are extremely open and affectionate with each other, which is fine with my husband, myself and all of our friends and family. Will they need to be more careful in Cozumel? My daughter and her partner are somewhat younger than the other gay couples and they haven't traveled outside of their own little world yet. I get sick thinking that someone might hurt, or ridicule them, and I have never requested them to not show affection to each other. I know they will want to go off own their own little excursions, but being mom, I'm worried. Should I be? Thanks for any help!
Rare geoherb Posted November 20, 2006 #2 Share Posted November 20, 2006 You don't mention exactly how young they are. Cozumel seemed to be safe when we were last there--but we were 40- & 46-year-old men then, both 6'3", and not too openly affectionate. I'd worry just as much about any two young women going off by themselves. I'd try to get them to stick with others from your group or with others that they meet on the ship. Hoosiermama Posted November 20, 2006 Author #3 Share Posted November 20, 2006 My daughter is 24 and her partner is 26. They are about 10 years younger than the other's, but in terms of them not really experiencing the outside world, they are far younger. They haven't really traveled, except of course when she was younger and we took our kids to vacation places. I've been following some of the threads about problems in different places, so I'm wondering about Cozumel. I'm sure she and her partner will spend their time there with her other friends and family and not really venture off alone. I tried to edit my post, because instead of saying there were 8 gay couples going on this cruise, there are a total of 8 people or 4 couples! Sorry! SingerEsq Posted November 21, 2006 #4 Share Posted November 21, 2006 We were in Cozumel in September (as well as Ocho Rios and Grand Cayman). Like we did in Ocho Rios, we had a private guide through Jungle Buggy Safaris or something like that (found it on shoretrips.com). Our guide literally took as all over the island. He was great and the whole thing was great. Never had any problem and then we did some shopping by ourselves along the waterfront (where all the stores are). As anyone should be, esp. young women either gay or straight, they should use good sense and I would not stray off the tourist path too much without a private guide or in a group tour. I remember being young(er) and thinking nothing could or would happen to me, but anything can happen to anyone. Hope you have a great cruise! bububr Posted November 22, 2006 #5 Share Posted November 22, 2006 Actually my partner and I have been to cozumel a number of times. We have never had any problems, however we stick to the 'tourist' routes around town and avoid anything that looks suspicious. One of our favorite things is Passion Island. Its a great beach getaway with an open bar and buffet; after theres a couple hours left for shopping downtown, or Sr. Frogs or whatever. http://local.google.com/ Heres a map: If the link doesn't show type in Cozumel into the seach, click on satellite, scroll up to the top of the island where you'll see a sand bar, and zoom in. Its our favorite beach spot on the island. Dave:eek:
Hoosiermama Posted November 22, 2006 Author #6 Share Posted November 22, 2006 Thanks for all the infomation about visiting Cozumel. I'm going to make sure that my daughter and her partner, as well as my son and his girlfriend stay with their groups and use their common sense to avoid any problems. We can't wait for this cruise! Everyone is getting really excited and we are anxious to go. Thanks for the information about Passion Island, it sounds wonderful! Also, to SingerEsq, I know what you mean about being younger and thinking that we were invincible. My kids are going through that stage right now, and it's kind of scary for us older folks! Nobbi Posted November 23, 2006 #7 Share Posted November 23, 2006 Although I've never been to Cozumel, I've been to PV, Mazatlan, Merida, Cancun. Mex is very gay friendly. Now I don't know about 2 women (or 1 or 3) in the boonies in terms of safety. But I wouldn't worry about gay bashing. (Jamaica, Caymans, St. Martin are a different story).
