Grandeur Review 7/11-7/18/04 Part 2

Recommended Posts

Thursday

Coco Cay

Heaven on the beach. For those that have been you know what I mean. For those that haven’t it’s an awesome place. I would be happy to stay there a few days. We got our lounge chairs, parked our stuff and snorkeled for a few hours The snorkeling around the furthest guard chair was awesome. We saw a barracuda and a few rays on the way out there. Once we got there we simply floated amidst tons of fish. As I told Jen we had the fish mojo going since they came up to us, pecked at our legs and goggles, and basically took us away.

We decided to go back to the ship around 2 to beat the crowds, which we did. As we were coming back on the tender we saw some of the crew fishing off the back of the ship! One even had a fish on the line. Now that’s an excursion idea!

This was the day I discovered BBCs. The regular BBC on RCI is Bailey's, banana mix and colada mix. Very tasty. I got a special BBC from Kevin at the Champagne Lounge after dinner that had Kahlua, Vodka, and Coconut Rum added. After two of those I didn't know what to do with the dice at the Craps table!!!

Friday

Port Canaveral

We had to be up early again to clear before getting off. We went down at about 8:30 and walked right thru again. We had been to the Space Center on a land vacation and saw a shuttle launch, so we didn’t plan to take any excursions. I couldn’t see the point of taking an hour + trip each way to stand in line at Disney or Universal. Our tablemates Chuck and Linda went deep sea fishing and only caught bait fish. Jeff and Megan did a kayak excursion and said it was awesome.

When you are in Port Canaveral, there are several transportation options to get to town or to Cocoa Beach. There is a shuttle that runs called the Fun Bus that the crew uses, it stops at a mall and also to Cocoa Beach You can ride all day for $6, which is much less than the other options.

We stopped by the Loyalty Ambassador’s desk and ended up booking a 9 night for Voyager for next year. I transferred to an internet only TA once we got back and saved $200 even after upgrading to a balcony cabin. We are also getting $200 shipboard credit because of some special they were running – credit for a 9 night is usually only $100.

I had a facial at the spa which was very enjoyable. It was $20 off because it was a port day. Tonight was the Gala Buffet. The chocolate desserts were heavenly!

Saturday

At Sea

Depression starts to set in realizing we need to pack. I spent a lot of time with my Casino family and Jen hung with her friends. Our tablemate Chuck won the final bingo, unfortunately it was split 3 ways. Still $2500 is good enough. We had a lovely farewell dinner with lots of hugs and e-mails to go around. Packed after dinner, then it was one more night out.

Sunday

Depart

Up at 6, out of the cabin at 8, then hurry up and wait. Our color was called about 11 and we were at the train station by 11:30. I took several walks around the ship to say goodbye.

Overall, I had the week of my life, as did my DD. The ship and crew are outstanding. I will definitely cruise the Grandeur again.

Tammy from the boards is graciously scanning all the Compasses. I will post a link when she’s done. Here’s a link to some pics

Sure it was $1100

Spa $100

Bingo $100

Gifts, Jewelry, liquor to bring home, etc $250

The rest was drinks. I always tipped on top of the drink charge. I brought home most of my cash except for tips.

Thanks,

John

Hi all

Thanks for the kind words. First some business:

If you missed part 1 of the review here's the link

http://boards.cruisecritic.com/showthread.php?t=61795

Paul is right, you could have a much smaller sea pass bill if you bring your own soda and alcohol. However, I'm not a drinker at home - I've had a case of Corona for years untouched in my fridge. Paying for drinks on board I'm really paying a premiuim to socialize. Being a single mom it helped me get out and meet people. It was never more than 3 a day, and I always had ice water by the time I got to the Casino. Never mix booze and money! I did buy the Keitel one special - 2 bottles for $30 for gift giving. Also, I paid half the bill when I got home with my leftover cash, I use the seapass to get miles on my credit card. Next year when I use my new RCI card EVERYTHING will go on the card and I'll get double points. I'll pay it off when I get the bill. That's how I budget for the cruise.

Teach - there were 2 identical shows nightly, one for each dinner seating. They were:

RCI Singers and Dancers - Welcome Aboard Show; Broadway Rhythm and Rhyme; Jump Jivin Swing; The Beat Goes on

Comedian Al Romas

Magician Tyler Knight

Entertainer Mario D' andrea

Acrobat Lance Ringnald

John, formal nights were Monday and Thursday. The only time I felt any movement was coming back in to Baltimore when it was a rainy night. The Atlantic was smooth going all the way. I am very sensitive to movement (I get positional vertigo) and never had a problem.

JRudy, some of the events were

Scavenger hunts

Dance parties

Teen Family Feud

Jeopardy

Pool pary

MOvie night

Battle of the sexes -the girls always win:)

Hide and seek

Talent show

If you would like email me your address and I can send copies.

I am so jealous of those of you going back on GOS. I keep trying to find a way to get back on her this year. But with a daughter starting high school next month it's not easy. If any of you are casino fans let the crew know they are now immortalized on the web!

If anyone has any other questions ask away!

Berd-

Some previous posts talked about toilet problems and sewer smells on the Grandeur in July. Did you encounter either?

Jan, I thought you could get my e-mail thru here but I guess not.

It's berda0625NOSPAM@earthlink.net

Just remove the NOSPAM.

JWC - yes I did notice an odor as we were walking to our cabin for the first time going forward from the Champagne Bar area. However, it was gone on the way back. I think another poster had it right saying it only occurred when they were cleaning out the tanks for the next cruise. These particular tanks can't be dumped at sea. As far as toilet probs, only once did I need to press the button twice. It's a different type of system so I suppose there could be a delay due to changes in pressure, etc. It's absolutely not worth stressing over.

Have a wonderful time!!!!!!!!

Berd-

Thanks for the info. My wife and I are sailing or the Grandeur 9/4/2004. One previous cruise on Navigator of the Seas.

Had been concerned about Grandeur being an older ship from some of the posts in June/July, but latest info sounds like she's still in pretty good shape.

We're looking forward to it.

Berd,

Is there an internet room available on Grandeur? And if so, do you know what the charge for using it is?

Yes, there's an area I think on 5 near the Purser's Desk with PCs. I believe it's .50 a minute, and I've read that people say it's slow. There's a 10 minute free coupon in the Gold C&A book to use as well.

Thanks a lot for the info on the internet. I had one other question Berd. Did you feel that your daughter was safe to be left to walk around the ship by herself, especially at night going back to the cabin? Maybe I'm being too paranoid.

I felt safe enough for a couple of reasons -

our cabin was very close to the stairs and elevator so she didn't need to walk alone thru many public areas to get there.

we had designated check in times every night.

I knew where she would be - in Adventure Ocean or the cabin ONLY.

She always knew where to find me.

She's (luckily for me) not the type at all to wander or look for trouble. I'm more social than she is.

We went over the rules several times anyway - observe the curfew, no going into anyone else's cabin, no one coming into our cabin, how to protect herself physically, etc.

We had walkie talkies but did not use them. You may want to try them.

I understand your concern. Last year on Majesty I was sick in bed the first night and when she came to check in from AO she asked if she could go to the kid's disco until midnight. It was the first time she was "going out" herself and it felt really strange. I said yes and waited up for her (of course).

It all depends on your daughter of course but it works out very well for us. Cruising is my vacation of choice for now because we can spend the days together and spend the evenings with people our own age.

Your daughter sounds alot like ours. She is really responsible and mature for her age. We will also go over the same rules with her. Thanks for your help.
