DH and I drove down to Ballentyne peir to check out the Radiance today. Wow, what a beautiful ship. We've only cruised once before and it was on a ship with a limit of 300 people. This ship is huge. The only concern we had was the metal ladder thing that was parked in front of 3 levels of balconies. We are on the port side and couldn't check this out. But it was right in front of the same balcony on the starboard side. Here's hoping it does not block our view.

Looking forward to your review. Will be doing the Eastern Caribbean on Radiance on Feb. and there doesn't seem to be a lot of info on her since there are so many newer ships being tried out.

We're off today too...have to unpack and catch up on some sleep. We had a great time and the ship is beautiful. Gordon was the best Cruise Director!

A little disappointed we only had towel animals three nights though...

Another cruiser here looking forward to your review. We are eagerly anticipating our Panama Canal cruise on the Radiance in October.
Hope you had a wonderful time!

PGcruiser: I believe the ladder you are referring to is
moveable and they slide it along to clean windows etc.
We had a starboard cabin, so not entirely sure.
Birdie16: Missed you at the champagne bar meeting!
Yes, I do agree that Gordon the cruise director was
just wonderful. We too only had 3 towel animals.

Also looking forward to the review. We are probably going to try RCCL & Radiance specifically for our 2/06 cruise to Western Carib. Any and all points of view are helpful!

For those of you who just came of the Radiance and had Gordon Whatman for the Cruise Director....you had the BEST. We have sailed twice with him and are in touch with him via email. He is quite a showman and he is always around the ship and so friendly. We hope to see him in Las Vegas where he lives and will be off on vacation end of September when we will be vacationing in Vegas. We have had many CDs and he has been our favorite so far.

Under the "Meet and Mingle' section we had a thread going,
and you posted a few times at the beginning. We continued
up until the week before the cruise and decided to meet.
It's all on the thread. Sorry you missed it.

don't know if its the beauty of the ship or Captain Kent, but out of my 14 cruises on various lines I believe the Radiance is my very most favorite ship.
Captain Kent not only sings to his passengers, ( I hear you can now buy a cd of him on board) but makes you feel that he is happy to have YOU on board. Can't wait till we return to both of them ( CAPTAIN KENT and his Ship) in 2005 !!!

Wifeofbedo, I guess I missed it because of the lack of interest on that thread and I didn't go back and check it out closer to the cruise...sorry I missed meeting you all!

Dondiane, actually...the new Captain on the Radiance is Captain Darin Bowland, a very young and visible Captain.

Sorry we missed you too. Actually only myself and Anne showed up.
Capt. Darin switches with Capt. Kent. They do a rotation, and
work 6 months on and 2 months off, so who knows
who will be next. If I read you correctly, Capt. Kent is easy on the eyes ;)..... and so is Capt. Darin. Young, very tall, and handsome.
...hubby kept telling me to close my mouth so I don't drool too much  Had a nice talk with him since I found out we both are from Vancouver suburbs. He's married, has 2 kids. His 5yo daughter has been on 65 cruises with him! No singing though. The cruise director sang to us instead. Fun!

I've done my review under the "reviews" section, but I suppose you must be
approved before it gets put on. So, it said there is a backlog, and they
will email me when it is posted. So we wait. I will let you know when
it is available to read.
I thought about putting it here to read, but then I thought that reviews
was the proper place for it.

Cheers!

Erin.

You are pretty speedy with your review! I haven't even unpacked yet. I look forward to your review, I am wondering if you had some of the same comments as me on this cruise.

I have a long long long review of the ship that i posted on the old message boards saved at home on my computer... and I will post that review of the ship again ... But you may want to go to www.webshots.com and do a search for radiance of the sea... or plyman69... i have like 10 albums of ROS up on that web site.. including many cabin types

Thanks again

Tom

Don't you just love the Radiance. We have sailed her 3 times and have always had a wonderful time. We are taking a NCL Alaska cruise on 9/18 while my DS and her family will be on the Radiance for the same itinerary. We will meet up at each port. (Maybe I can use one of my cards to sneak in J/K) I will be very jealous, but NCL only charges port charges for our Grandbaby and the price was about 1/2 of RCCL. Beautiful ship, great crew and lots of WOW.

Just came across this and thought it interesting. Our Cruise
Director Gordon Whatman has his own website!
go to: www.gordonwhatman.com and you can hear him sing
and see pictures and read all about him. We really
enjoyed him. He was so funny! :D

My review is now posted under the reviews section. I will try
to post the link here:

www.cruisecritic.com/memberreviews/memberreview.cfm?EntryID=5902

Hope it works:rolleyes:

After reading it again I thought of a few things I neglected to mention.
Some people saw some dolphins, and only once did we see whales. We
were in the elevator at the time :( so no pics. We did see some seals
on the ice flows around Hubbard too. Waiting for the elevators and
trying to catch one is a sport that you need to master. Anyone having
gone on this ship will know what I mean. Also, we did get a couple
of toiletry/cosmetic bags as a thank you from the C&A society. Nice touch.
Also, if any of you go to the port and shopping talks, sit close to the
front. She throws out a lot of samples and free gifts.

Hope you enjoy the review. Am curious what others thought about thier
cruise too.

I just loved your cruise review. Thank you for posting so quickly after you're cruise.

We also live in Vancouver and will be cruising to Hawaii on September 25 on the Radiance.

You said that you had a can open in your luggage, we are planning to bring some diet soft drinks, I'm thinking I might purchase them in plastic bottles instead of cans, what do you think?

We also have a couple of bottles of champagne that we would like to bring along, can we bring them in carry on?

We did not bring any drinks onboard in our carry-on, except
for 2 cans of pop (soda for US people). They went through no
problem. My can that burst in my suitcase looked as though
something sharp may have punctured it, and perhaps if I had
buried it deep in the middle it may not have happened. I don't
know if somebody else's luggage may have been the culprit or
a sharp corner of a hardcover book I packed did it in, but thank
heavens for the dark towel! I wrapped a bottle of bubbly in our
other suitcase in a towel, put it right in the middle of everything,
and it did just fine. If you are bringing your own aboard,
make sure to ask the steward to empty your
fridge (if your cabin has one) then you will be sure not to be
charged for anything you didn't consume.
I am very interested to hear how your Hawaii cruise goes. We are
thinking of doing that for our 25th - a few years away yet, but
who knows. The roughness of the seas scares me off a bit.
Hopefully your TA will send you a thank you bottle of wine or something
and you won't have to worry about packing a bottle around.

Enjoy!

Thank you for your most excellent review!

We are in the same cabin on Serenade of the Seas 9/12.

You mentioned:
"We were on the starboard side, deck 9 room 9584 right in the middle of the "hump" of the ship. We were a category D1. We loved our room! Yes, a bit tight considering there were 4 adults, but that was primarily at night when the sofa bed was pulled out."

Does the sofa bed fold out like a regular sofa bed or a futon? When pulled out, how much room is there to walk between the bed and the wall or desk?

Thanks!

My in-laws slept on the sofabed, so not having slept on it myself,
(hubby and I slept on the bed) here is what we learned:
The cabin steward came in after we boarded, and asked which way they wanted it made up?
Way #1 is a "queen" size (looked more like a double to me!)
and it folds out kind of like a futon, with your head and feet at the
arm rest. This way, you can squeeze by carefully ;) and get from one
side of the room to the other.
Way #2 is supposed to be "king size" and your head is at the couch end
and feet away from it, just like a regular pull out sofabed at home.
The king size way goes right to the desk/mirror part and you can not
walk around it at all. You have to crawl overtop.

My in-laws sleep in a double size at home anyway, so it was fine for
them to sleep in a cozy space. We also liked being able to walk around
the bed, not over it. Was nice for when we would go out late, and they would
just go to bed and we could walk by without disturbing them. I did notice
however, the "line" in the matress where it was put together. Wouldn't want
my back in the middle of that. No problem if you keep to your own side of the bed I guess. Also loved the curtain that pulled across fully to close off the 2 sleeping areas.

Hope this helps!!

anxious to hear how your trip went. I have read other reviews that you have posted and loved them. I did have a question. I have heard that there are no aft stairways. Is this correct? Ugh. I though when I booked the aft balcony there were stairways before the elevators? Oh well... I will definitely get my exercise then since I mostly only use the stairs. thanks for any info in advance.
