sm76 Posted March 6, 2007 #1 Posted March 6, 2007 We are packing for our cruise on the Radiance and we can't decide on what clothes to pack! For the formal is a sport coat to casual with a tie or alone? Also does the suit for formal have to be a dark suit or can it be brown or grey or other nice colors. any suggestions would be appreicated. Thank you:)

birdie16 Posted March 6, 2007 #3 Posted March 6, 2007 You want the technical description of formal? Because the technical description is Dark Suit or Tux. That being said, I have seen sport coats with a tie and without, but if you really want to do it right, the dark suit or tux is the way to go. Dark suit for formal wear is usually a dark blue, dark grey or black suit. If you want to save the space in your luggage you can rent a tux on the ship.
DonnaK Posted March 6, 2007 #4 Posted March 6, 2007 Radiance is a classy ship and deserves a certain level of respect for its dress code. A dark suit would be best for formal nights (with a white shirt and two different ties, one for each night). A brown or grey suit would be fine too. Having said that, there will be people dressed ultra-formal in tuxes, and some people underdressed. A sports jacket with a shirt and tie would be rather casual for formal night, there are some who won't even bother to wear a jacket or tie (or both) even though it defies the definition of formal. So it's all a matter of how "formal" you wish to be and how loosely you are comfortable with defining formal.
Rare DCPIV Posted March 6, 2007 #5 Posted March 6, 2007 I bring a dark suit, a white shirt (or two, just in case), and a couple ties. That just makes it easy on me. Since there is no other occasion to dress up on the cruise, I saw no reason to bring a sportcoat when I had a dark suit. Unless you really like tuxes or really need that luggage space, there's no reason to rent a tux on the ship. Passengers wear them, and they look good, but you won't feel out of place without one. I like fun ties, too. I mean, we ain't dining with the Queen. D
rbden Posted March 6, 2007 #6 Posted March 6, 2007 Go with whatever makes you feel comfortable. Dont listen to anyone that tells you that you are less of a person or disrespectful for not wearing a suit or tux. this is your vacation..have fun. I have been on several cruises, and had tux, suit and sportscoat were acceptable.
burger40 Posted March 7, 2007 #7 Posted March 7, 2007 I have cruised RCCL 37 times...Have seen plenty of sports jkts. on dressy nights with tie....You'll be fine !!!! If the fashion police are so busy checking out what other people are wearing, I have to assume that they're not taking the time to enjoy their own vacations because there too busy paying attention to everyone elses.
cruisegirl1 Posted March 7, 2007 #8 Posted March 7, 2007 We were on the Radiance in January 2007. Most men wore a suit or tux. Very few were in a sport jacket and fewer without jackets. It is perfectly fine to wear the same suit twice. You can bring a second shirt or have the first shirt laundered. Two year prior we were on the Radiance in Alaska and we witnessed the same type of dress. You will find that for a 7 night or longer cruise, most men will wear a suit it tux. If the cruise is shorter some men opt for a sport jacket. Enjoy M

I absolutely agree..........having sailed on Radiance 6 times with our 7th coming up in April.......there is no such thing as a "dress code" anymore. It is actually called "suggested attire". They are only suggesting what to wear..........they are not demanding what to wear. My husband has a dark dinner jacket that he wears with a nice pair of slacks and a collarless shirt or pullover. He has had to dress the part for 40 years and being recently retired.........so were the suits and ties! Remember this is your vacation, you paid for it............I am sure that you will look handsome in whatever you decide.
cb at sea Posted March 7, 2007 #10 Posted March 7, 2007 The name says it all--Sportscoat are NOT formal! Formal is dark suit or tux. That being said, if that's what you want to wear, wear it!

Thank you:) Hi, sm76 - A sport coat (with or without tie) will be fine. Don't be intimidated by the formal-wear assimilationists! RCCL has no dress code, only "suggested attire." You'll see a variety of dress in the dining room each night. It's your vacation, relax, enjoy, and dress comfortably. Ignore the fashion police. Assert your individuality!
dscomp Posted March 7, 2007 #14 Posted March 7, 2007 My DH wears a sports jacket with a white shirt and no tie. On our first cruise he wore slacks and a pull over shirt. To him that is formal. I on the other hand wear the full length gown, because I love to dress up. Neither one of us feel out of place in the dining room on formal night.:)
Silvery Seas Cruiser Posted March 7, 2007 #15 Posted March 7, 2007 Click the link: http://www.royalcaribbean.com/beforeyouboard/whatToKnow/whatToPack.do;jsessionid=0000HPZhX-rItqMSt5oky9AUhXz:10ktdmqkf see what RCCL's website has to say. I notice that the rule for formal night women's attire is cocktail dresses. That was what was printed on the Cruise Compass on Majesty of the Seas. There is no mention whatsoever of gowns. Can one safely assume then that gowns are no longer required on formal nights? Is this a change in RCCL policy?
chef_christoph Posted March 7, 2007 #16 Posted March 7, 2007 I found this on another thread: "Hi, We have kids, 9 and 6, so I asked Royal Caribbean about the dress code after my sister who has cruised with them said she saw everything in the dining room, even jeans. This is the response I got back. Quote: Thank you for your e-mail. Our Dress Code is a dining room guideline. We like for our guest to dress to the occasion because it adds more to the cruise ambience. We understand, however, that some guests are on vacation and want to wear what they want. We will not turn you away from the dining room if you want to wear blue jeans on formal night. We do ask that you do not wear shorts, t-shirts, or bathing suits in the dining as they are forbidden. Please note that we do offer casual dining in the Windjammer Cafe every night, except for the last cruise night. Have a Great Cruise! Thank you for choosing Royal Caribbean International. Constance Wood Customer Service Representative We will not be dressing formal on formal night." Woe is me Posted March 7, 2007 #18 Posted March 7, 2007 Dress code only applies to staunch cruise critic members, the other 99% could care less. Have fun.

JollyMon78 Posted March 7, 2007 #21 Posted March 7, 2007 To answer your question, a dark suite or tux is ideal. A sport coat would work if nothing else is available. This is one of the topics that really gets my wife and I going. We have been seeing mock turtlenecks and worse for formal night. It seems that the dress code has been tucked under the rug on several ships we have been on recently.
Goodwrench Posted March 7, 2007 #22 Posted March 7, 2007 What's with all the nay's towards dressing comfortably? Do not let others force you into their perceptions. This is YOUR holiday, enjoy it as you see fit. If anyone judges you based on your attire, they are the ones that need to have a good hard look into the mirror.
ken_nyc Posted March 7, 2007 #23 Posted March 7, 2007 For myself I would bring a dark suit, white shirt and tie. Being that I do not have to wear a suit and tie at work, it is somewhat of a novelty to dress up.
Twice_a_year Posted March 7, 2007 #24 Posted March 7, 2007 Somehow the word “suggested” has entered into the evening dress attire. Quote from your official RCI Cruise Vacation Guide EVENING ATTIRE The following will help you plan your evening attire onboard the ship: 6-9 night cruises Two formal nights One smart casual night All other nights are casual Each ship also offers a variety of casual dining options each night. Across the page each type of attire is described: Formal: cocktail dresses for women; suits and ties or tuxedos for men. Page 2 After that being said, you will find that it is not enforced by RCI. More and more passengers are opting to disregard the “Formal” dress and electing to not take advantage of the alternative venues available to them.
Dick in Falls Church Posted March 7, 2007 #25 Posted March 7, 2007 I suggest a Barong Tagalog, which is a very fancy, long-sleeved Philipino dress shirt. Great in the tropics, compared to most other formal attire.
