cayo levantado

Hi,

Has anyone had luck getting out to Cayo Levantado on their own? (not with the ship) and how did you do it?

Has anyone tried this MS Tours company? Check out the link here:

Thanks!

Just came back from the NCL Spirit - here is the scoop on getting to Cayo Levantado. We did not want to book the ship's tour at $29 per person so we decided to go on our own. When you get off the tender in Samana, there are loads of taxis and private boat operators. At first they told us it would cost $40 pp return to Cayo Levantado. Once we walked away from the pier, some local guys followed us and said they would take us for $20pp return. We were a group of 8 (incl. 4 kids ranging from 11 to 16), and my husband negotiated $100 return for the 8 of us (i.e. $12.50 pp return - much better than the ship's $29). For this price, they put us on a speed boat with 5 girls from our ship - I think the girls paid the $20 pp rate.

It was quite the thrill ride over to the island (you will need a sense of adventure here, and I would not recommend for small children or mobility impaired adults, as you pretty much had to jump down about 8' (with assistance) onto the boat which was much lower than the pier, and climb out at the other end. When we got to the island, one of the guys on the boat came with us. The security people at the island were not happy, and he told them that he had brought us on a boat from a hotel in Cabarete - we were not to tell them that we came from the ship. The authorities are trying to regulate the rates for cruise passengers, and make us pay way more than neccessary. We went along with the story and everything was fine. The guy stayed with us on the island, and at the time we had agreed upon for pick up, escorted us back to the boat where we were taken back to Samana.

We had a wonderful day - the island is beautiful and the snorkelling excellent.
