kingtns Posted April 17, 2007 #1 Share Posted April 17, 2007 I have just over 50,000 points on my RCI Visa...do you think it's better just to take the OBC since I won't use the free 3/4 day Bahamas cruise? I guess I could use the savings for my fair, but it just seems like free$ to spend if it's just waiting in my account for me! Thanks!
piercetc4 Posted April 17, 2007 #2 Share Posted April 17, 2007 have you thought about using 25000 points to upgrade on a 5 or 7 night caribbean or mex riv sailing for 2 (outside to balcony sept - may or inside to outside june - aug) ? and maybe you could use the other 25000 for obc by asking for the 5000 pt coupons ( 5 of them) ? we used 25000 points on free companion fare for a 3 nighter and used another 25000 points on the 4 nighter- took 289 off one and 299 off the other- good luck with your points - can be a hard decision how to use them
kingtns Posted April 17, 2007 Author #3 Share Posted April 17, 2007 It is a hard decision...however we only sail between June-August & get balcony's (kids insides & that is fine for them) so that's why I thought to take all the credit for onboard...can I get all 50,000 points for 1 cruise...I know I will be able to spend every $...lol
LJR213 Posted April 17, 2007 #4 Share Posted April 17, 2007 Hi, I just started using my RCCL card and I am no way near that amount of points. I should probably already know this but I was wondering ... does anyone know if there is a way to check or keep track of them on line. Or do you need to wait until you get a statement from either RCCL themselves or the card company.
debshomespun Posted April 17, 2007 #5 Share Posted April 17, 2007 You can also cash in the 50,000 points to get $500. off any cruise. If the price of the cruise is inexpensive, it helps out alot. For instance, we are going on Mariner 9/2/07, paid $729.pp for D2 balcony, and will use 50,000 for $500. off the total expense. We also have a $100. OBC we received from booking on the Freedom (even though it was another cruise, we transferred it over to the Mariner when we booked) To me, that is still very good use of the points. We were going to use 125,000 points for a free cruise for 2, but by the time we use the LOWEST category outside cabin, and then upgrade to a balcony,(we were told we could not use the highest category oceanview) we were paying over $500. anyways, so we decided to use 50,000 points off 2 cruises, and then add to our remaining points for anothr $500. off another cruise in the future. piercetc4 Posted April 17, 2007 #6 Share Posted April 17, 2007 you are right- it is very easy to spend 500 on the ship- we had 650 obc once and spent that easily- drinks, casino, photos, specialty restaurant and it was gone!
Stella Darling Posted April 17, 2007 #7 Share Posted April 17, 2007 For me, we used it as onboard credit ($350), then went to the casino, took out $200 in $20 bills (which was charged to our seapass aka...onboard credit), then took the money HOME. We came home with more money than we left with. I didn't want to "use it up" by buying trinkets and crap. Instead I paid the kennel for boarding my dog! bigal3967 Posted April 18, 2007 #8 Share Posted April 18, 2007 We are using our 50,000 points for a free 4 night Bahama cruise on the Soverign in July 07. This was we use all of the $1000.00 you are granted for the cruise. We are booked in an F-1 category outside cabin on the 5th deck. We cruise with our 2 children so we booked another connecting cabin that way we are not all stuck in the same cabin. The cabin we booked is going to end up costing us about $900.00 so if you use it for a cruise in the high season you get more $$$$ for your points. Up to $1000.00 verses $500.00. Although having $500.00 bucks to spend on a cruise you already have booked sounds awfully good too. Al
bigal3967 Posted April 18, 2007 #9 Share Posted April 18, 2007 We are using our $50,000 points for a free 4 night bahama cruise for 2 on the Sovereign of the Seas July 9, 2007. We also booked a connecting cabin for our 2 kids and it is going to cost us $918.00. (although it is goeing for 1020.00 right now). We booked early and actually got about $120.00 lowered about a month ago It is a categor F-1 oceanview on the 5th deck. This gets the maximum # of dollars for the points I believe. Although it is nice to have that $500.00 to spend if you already have a cruise booked. Al
seahags Posted April 18, 2007 #10 Share Posted April 18, 2007 Like the OP, we just turned in points for 12 $50 OBC certificates. Somehow I feel as though it's a huge "windfall" having the OBC since we'ave long since paid for the cruise itself. Yes, it's the same $$ amount either way, but we like not having the credit card statement when we get home...it's much more like 'freebie' money!!!:D Have fun!!!!! Gotta Love Cruisin ! Posted April 18, 2007 #11 Share Posted April 18, 2007 Just go to the casino cashier each day and charge $2000 to your seapass. That is what is allowed. Do this everyday and pocket the money. Bring home and pay off the card. Easy way to collect alot of points
cruiseguy1016 Posted April 18, 2007 #12 Share Posted April 18, 2007 If you won't use them for the free cruise, go ahead and use them for the OBC. If you are a family, you won't have any problem using them. It's nice to check your account on your stateroom TV and see a credit. LJR213 - you can check how many points you have by going to the BOA website. Just view your most recent statement and the points will be shown there. powelweb Posted April 18, 2007 #13 Share Posted April 18, 2007 If you're carrying more than $10,000 in cash, you need to declare it on your customs form. Just keep that in mind when hitting the casino to cash out for points. happy sailing, wendy

boingy300 Posted April 18, 2007 #15 Share Posted April 18, 2007 Thanks Cruiseguy1016 I just wasn't sure where to check. I know my friend got a letter from RCCL I wasn't sure if thats the way it worked. Thanks again I just recently enrolled to veiw my account online. The I didn't know our "ID" and they have a person that can help you on instant messaging. I have to admit, it was very easy. We are rolling OUT of AMEX points, where 20,000 = ....$50! into BOA card. No comparison to the benefits of the RCCL card! Karen
gmadvm Posted April 18, 2007 #16 Share Posted April 18, 2007 forgive me if this has already been answered...but are the points only used for on board credit or can you use it to pay off the cruise? we are at about $90,000 and trying to figure out if it will be better to wait until 125,000 and take a free caribbean or get to 100,000 and take the $1000 in cash and use it to pay off the cruise. we have canary islands in november booked already and looking at jewel transatlantic in 2008, so i know by then we will have hit 125,000. we aren't big drinkers or casino players, so i don't think we would burn through $1000 in on board credit. of course if it has to be OBC i will do as suggested and just take it out of the casino as cash and use it to pay the bill when we get home. but then i might be tempted to use the obc on bbcs and massages. :)

You can use points for discounts off a cruise. Here is the website with the info. http://www.royalcaribbean.com/content/pdf/VISAterms.pdf If you are that close to 125K points save for the free fare for 2, you will get the best bang for your points! mtebor Posted April 18, 2007 #18 Share Posted April 18, 2007 We took the $500 cruise discount. We don't charge much on the trip (<200) and we prefer to get the 2x points for putting the sea pass on on the rc cc.
