Roll Call Meetings

Recommended Posts

We have never met anyone on a cruise on a pre-arranged basis. So it was interesting to see the "Roll Calls" on here. As a result we are wondering:

a) How many CCers actually meet onboard as a result of the "Roll Call meetings"?

b) Would it make sense to have a standard time and location to meet other CCers so that if you missed Roll Call, you could still show up at the meeting?

c) For those who have met other CCers on a cruise, what value did you find in meeting the CCers?

Hope everyone has smooth waters and sunny skies!!

Yes. I've been to two out of three I missed the one arranged by the ship (RCCL). Both of the others CCers agreed on a time, when and where first day.

On the first one there were five of use that met on the pool deck by the bar at 3:00 PM. Then there was one the next day (sea day at 11:00 am again by the pool (7). We eat lunch there and talked about excursions. All of us were doing one excursion the next day but it was split between two times. Most of the others were doing the arternoon excursions as well. Due to MS I couldn't go. :( But we ran into each other all the time and compared notes for the rest of the cruise.

On the second one, we met at 2:00 the first day at sea in a lounge and had drinks together. Again some of us were taking the same excursions so we met when we were on shore. We had lunch together and then did the excursion (not ship one).

When you talk to each other about two weeks out name a time and place before life boat drill. Bring your life jacket and have a cool one while talking and meeting each other. You can make a game of it. Guess who I am. You can all where a red ribbon or pick a color. Start intorducing yourself to each other. Talk about your plans for the voyage ect. If you have children bring them to, they may meet other kids there.

If one or two of you have a late flight in, then plan a second meeting the next day. If your first day is Half Moon Cay then meet for breakfast at 7:00 am or so you can go together. Or if one of you have rented a Cabana meet there at 10:00 am. Go for a swim together.

It is fun. I've met many people this way. Some have met at a hotel before boarding and had breakfast together before boarding. If you are leaving from Norflok the Marriot Waterside is right at the dock.

The value is you learn about what to aviod if you go back to that Island. Everyone did diffent tours some took ship;s tours others arranged their own. You learn which is better for you. I take tours and watch for accessibility issues (MS). Then when I see the others, sometimes they will ask for a friend or relative. I recommend St Thomas Accessible tours for thoses confined to a chair. If not totally confined then there were other options as St Thomas follows ADA Ie Cabs will take the wheelchair and put it in the truck for youso you can go other places. Most hotels on beaches are accessable.

We have met in the area of the Lido bar and in the Crow's Nest lounge after the lifeboat drill. Have mixed results on those who show. Things come up and some don't make it (including me.) Nice way to get together, though.

If CCers suggest the Crows Nest after lifeboat drill, we don`t go. Its a long walk from our cabin and we are usually tired. If they suggest sail away, then we are there. In the past, I`ve met up with several CCers and have made some good friends. In Dec. I`m sailing for the thi  rd time with one CCer....jean

Sometimes a sea day meeting is good as well for those that miss the meeting after life boat drill. Things can come up, and plans change. I usually give my cabin number to those interested in meeting, and we can decide when and where to meet.

I've met several CC'ers on various cruises over the years. The first time was in '01. There were only five of us; I met one couple as planned and found the other couple when she overheard me talking about her (flyingfish). (Good thing it was nice!). She doesn't post much anymore, but I did see her post recently and I remember her well.

In '02 there were only four of us. I saw the couple again on this last cruise; I've kept in regular touch with the other CC'er. We'll be forever friends.

'03 and '04 we had large get togethers. This last time HAL went all-out giving us the Queen's Room with a nice spread.

I'm a fan of CC get-togethers. It's nice to put a face with a name.

As far as a set meeting time/place goes, I think that would be difficult. Each cruise, and each group is different and makes the plans that are best for them.

We have met other cc'ers either in the Crow's Nest, Ocean Bar, etc. There really isn't a time that will suit everyone. But at least te majority show up. We have met a lot of nice cc'ers on varius cruises.

Hello Allen,

We have alway's enjoyed "CC" meetings on board ship. One gets to learn alot about different places and at the sametime you make wonderful NEW friends. It's good to set a time and make a meeting point for the first meeting. The idea of having something on, that lets others know that you are a "CC" member is great. I am trying to think of something at the moment. Have a great cruise:)

I've had better luck with meeting "board" posters through Yahoo rather than cruise critic. Unfortunately, the yahoo Holland America board has gotten pretty small. I'm going to work to revive it and will let you all know when it gets to be fun again.

There are about 20 of us scheduled on the Rotterdam August 30th and we are meeting at sail away in the Crow's Nest with an alternate on the first full day at sea.

In my last 4 cruises, the last one 10/31/04 Westerdam was the first time any one showed up. SailerBill was there with a sign up sheet, I was only one that signed in.There had been 8 people that had run a roll call for 3 month never showed. My question is: people that talk about the trip for couple months, ports visited ect. "I'll see you aboard" NEVER SHOW WHAT IS THEIR BAG!!!

We have been meeting other CCers since 02. The turn out varies, but it is always a lot of fun. On December 5th we have a Celebrity Hawaii cruise with about 250 people. We have a number of meeting times set up. We have met some of these people on other cruises. And we plan future cruises with some. I think it is a great way to meet people and has become one of the things I look forward to on a cruise. We often have shore excursions planned with others we have met on the boards.

We were on the Tahitian Princess in March and there was a strong Roll Call of about 20 of us. We met the first day at the Pool Bar and each day after that at 5pm some of the Group would be up there having a drink. We didn't always go but when we did we had a lot of fun. As the Tahitian only has about 650 passengers we did see them throughout the ship during the cruise.

I am still in contact with quite a few of those couples. They have actually planned to return in March 2006 for the same cruise as it is the very best trip. We hope to repeat it in the next few years.

We're just back form Volendam 2 weeks ago. We had a group of 16 that had been chatting on the roll call board for about 2 months before going. We arranged to meet the afternoon of our 2nd day out as we were in Nassau that morning but left there at 12. We met at the dolphin bar by the inside pool. Had a great time. All 16 showed and our group grew throughout the week as we included other people we met on board. We had a standing meeting set for everyday at 4 back at the dolphin bar as that was happy hour.

I brought along 16 pair of groucho glasses and handed them out to everyone that first meeeting, as an ice breaker. Folks had fun with them and on the last formal nite we arranged to have the ships photographer come take a pic of our group on the dining room stairs wearing our glasses. A hoot!

We've all shared e-mail addresses so plan on staying in touch and may very well try to do something as a group again.

btw one of the gals stopped at the casino after that first mtg and with her groucho glasses in her pocket, she won $2500 on the slots. So maybe that's now a must pack item.. *L* Had mine in my pocket on my one trip into the casino and won $56 on the slots. Must be mine were in the wrong pocket though.. *S*

I have enjoyed meeting people from CC on board and shared some private excursions with them. :)

I never committ to meet at a Sailaway or after the Muster Drill because I know I won't be there and I have made other arrangements instead.
