One post mentioned that meds/patches are provided free on their ship. How about non-med wrist bands? Also for free I hope, this vacation is getting expen$ive icon_wink.gif

If not, which brand names worked for you? On an internet search, there are many different brands with different approaches.

Just came off of NCL Spirt 7 day inside passage, saw quite a few people with patches, but no one sick. Some said it was rough one night, didn't feel it. We had a deck 9 cabin all the way forward, and neither my wife or I noticed any significant motion. We even went outside twice to dump gray water, didn't have approval till middle of the cruise to dump inside the 12 mile limit.

Ginger capsules have worked very well for me for car-sickness. I'm planning to try them on my June cruise (but will take Dramamine with me just in case). Ginger capsules can be purchase in a bottle at drug stores and health food (GNC, for example) stores.

The wrist bands are great. They are only 10.00 and you can get them at the drug store where they sell asprin. We have never gotten sick with them on even though everyone else on the ship did. We had the casino to ourself. We take bonine just in case and have never needed it.

  • 5 weeks later...

Just back from a 7-day southbound from Seward to Vancouver on Celebrity Summit. The only time we felt like we were on the ocean was the first night, from Seward to the Hubbard Glacier. After that, it was pure glass!

And yes, I've been on a Caribbean cruise when we shared the Gulf with a hurricane, so I know "rock'n'roll"! Couldn't do Cancun/Cozumel on that one, 'cause the tenders couldn't handle the waves in the harbor, and the Captain wouldn't risk trying to dock the ship.

Came back from the Sun on 6/13. We had slightly rough weather on Monday, after leaving Vancouver on Sunday. The rest of the week it was pretty calm, until Saturday going back to Vancouver. Gale/strong gale force winds, 7-12 foot waves, and rain. They had all the doors to the outside decks closed. I told my husband we bought a cruise and got an amusement park ride, too!

My daughter is a little prone to motion sickness. She felt a little sick on Monday, but then got her sea legs and did fine until Saturday. She never actually got sick, but was an interesting shade of green until the Bonine and ginger took affect.

I want to add my two cents on this post also. I call my husband a lightweight because he gets seasick and he can't read in a car.

On our honeymoon cruise in the Caribbean 15 years ago, he spent the majority of the cruise either green or in bed (alone) because he thought he was above being seasick. Ha!!

We have since been whale watching and deep sea fishing off the coast of Maine in small boats and he's worn Scop patches and never had any problems with feeling queasy.

We have been on two Alaskan cruises in the past three years and this past year, in the Inside Passage, on our last day, it was a little rough. He had taken his patch off the previous day (tough guy) and went back to the room to put another back on. He was fine a couple hours later. The boat quit rocking so much by then.

I don't know about the wrist bands. Being a pharmacist, I tend to lean toward the drug end....that's what pays my bill when I want to cruise!

I've used the patch for motion sickness for years, but my first cruise I was affected by the motion only one evening. We had left Hubbard glacier en route to Valdez, the last formal night. Really didn't enjoy my dinner that evening and missed the Baked Alaska parade to go back to my cabin to lie down. My next cruise I'm adding Bonine (and maybe ginger capsules too!) to my packing list in addition to the patch!

I also had the "land was moving" issue for one day after we got in port at Anchorage, but it was gone the next morning. Wierd feeling!

Just take all the remedies you think you might need, and then if you're prepared, you probably won't need them!

Have a great cruise!

On our 7 day cruise from Vancouver to Seward (May 28) we had very rough sailing when we entered the open Gulf on Saturday, May 29. There were small whitecaps. Then we had rough waters from Hubbard to Seward after we entered the open Gulf waters with no whitecaps but with good sized swells which rocked us from side to side. Quite a few were seasick both days.

If you are prone to motion sickness, take several methods to deal with it.
