I went on to the Olympus web site, and I see that they are now at the model 1030. The improvements are in the resolution (10.3 megapixels) and some real cool features: panorama is the one I like the most. Gonna look for one because we're going on a cruise soon, and I'm so impressed with this camera.

Im so glad this thread came back to life..ive been researching this camera for a few days and never even thought to look here.

I read somewhere that you can only do 10sec of video even with a memory card. Does anyone know about this?

Thanks

Pam

I don't think that's correct - the memory available on cards is up to 4 gigs now (maybe even higher...), so I think that there would be no limitation on the duration of a video - except if the card is full. Where did you read this? If online, do you have a link?

thanks,

OK: found the answer in the instructions for the 1030 SW: if you ah the framerate at 30 FPS (frames per second), you can only get 10 seconds, but if you redcue it to 15 FPS, you have unlimited (18min 47 sec / 1 Gig of memory).

Great pictures! I just bought the 1030SW today! We are cruising on April 25th, so I'll be playing with all the settings, getting familiar with them.

Did you take any videos with it? Also, I didn't see any pictures of you or your travel mates - camera shy, are we?:D

I have to thank all the people who posted on this thread - it made it very easy to decide which camera to buy. I checked other brands, but the Olympus seams to have all the options I wanted. The only drawback is the 10 second maximum video length at maximum video resolution.

If you click on the link in one of my previous posts, you can read the instruction manual. And then you'll realize just how cool this camera is!

The video restriction is only on 30 frames per second at high resolution - all other modes and resolutions have no time limit. And, the time gap between 10 second clips is about 1 second, so you can stitch the clips together. I think the software program that comes with the camera lets you do that.

You'll want to buy 2 memory cards: one micro/mini SD (the camera comes with a converter to regular SD), and one Olympus brand memory card. The reason for purchasing the Olympus proprietary brand card is that it's the only one that will allow you to perform the panoramic functions. That is a real cool feature too, since it automatically stitches together high-resolution images into a panoramic image. That perfect sunset can then be sent to a printer for an amazing picture to enjoy on your wall.

Well, leaving on vacation in 8 days - can't wait to try out the underwater functions in Bermuda, St. Thomas, and St. Maarten!:)

Nice Andrea! Looks like in Roatan you got right down with the fish. How deep was the water?

The 10sec limitation has been fixed by a firmware update so you don't need to fear that limitation anymore:

  • Now supports movie recording on 4 GB and higher microSDHC cards.
  • Using an xD-Picture Card TypeM+ or TypeH, you can now continuously record movies with VGA quality ( 640 x 480 ) 30 fps up to the capacity of the card.

If movies have already been recorded with the current firmware ( 1.0 ) on a 4 GB or higher microSDHC card ( hereafter referred to as "the card" ), the contents of the card should be backed up to a PC. Then, please format the card using the camera. Please note that formatting cards deletes all data stored on the card, including images and data recorded using other devices.

Also, for those worried about spending 165.00 for annual maintenance you could always just get the housing when the time comes instead:

http://www.amazon.com/Olympus-202172-PT-043-Underwater-Housing/dp/B0016A6SZ4/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=electronics&qid=1209257798&sr=1-1

It is currently 200.00 and it will probably be less when your year is up, but the maintenance fee will likely remain the same. Then you will be sure your camera is still waterproof and you could take it even deeper.

Quikster: Thanks for the information!

I had a problem the second day when I was snorkeling the second day: The camera gave me a warning "memory card door open" (or something like that). I checked the door and it was closed. But when I came out of the water, and checked it on the beach, I found sme water drops inside! Not sure what's the problem, but it was only the secind day using it. I'll need to look into this further and see if I did something wrong (not sure what, because I don't recall opening the cover while under water).

So here are the long-awaited photos of my trip. (click here)

I did the "auto adjust levels" in Photoshop - realy brings out the colour, and gets rid of the green hue. The videos are lmited to 10 seconds (too bad I didn't get Quikster's post before I went on my trip!). The angel fish feeding frenzy video is fantastic - never experienced anything like that before.

I will post some of my fresh waer pictures and video later this summer.
