Conquest Review 8/22 LONG!!

Recommended Posts

I am a travel agent and chose the Conquest for my honeymoon because all of my clients who have went on her LOVED her. We had a honeymoon from HELL!! Dont get me wrong... the ship is beautiful. We just got an off week. I have cruised CCL several times, and loved it everytime. I seriously do not think I will cruise again... here are some details...

When we arrived, they had two lines, one for funpass and one regular. Our line moved pretty quick. We noticed while in line there were some scary people, but didnt think too much about it... more on that later. We got checked in and on the ship in about an hour. We went straight to the line to make reservations for the Pointe. We wanted to go on Tuesday because it was my birthday. They told us Tuesday was already booked, but he would try to clear us a table. 5 minutes later, we had a table. (One of the only good staff all week)

When we got to our cabin, our suitcases were already there. We were so excited, to have got a table, and to have our suitcases. Until we picked up the large piece to move it inside... it was soaked. Our clothes were ringing wet, and smelled like wet dog. I dont know how this happened, but we overlooked it since everything else seemed to be going so good. We went to the laundry and washed and ironed. While we were ironing, we had several people come in and huff and puff. I was nice and let them go ahead of us. No thank you, kiss my hiney, nothing.

We tried to go get something to eat, more rude, loud, scary people. If I was pushed once, I was pushed 500 times last week. I know CCL has no control over the people, but there were at least 3 large groups that made up 85% of the passengers. And each and everyone were hateful, loud and scary. People usually dont bother us, and I have to fight the Carnival is trashy argument with clients everyday. We have never experienced it until now... sorry off the subject.

We went and did the life boat drill, rested and got ready to go out. We were on deck 8, and decided to go to deck 5. From the top of the stairs on deck 8 to the bottom at deck 7, there was puke everywhere. There was also two dirty cups, and two cigarettes put out in the carpet. We decided to go to Karoake. We went in and were enjoying ourselves until a guy walked in (he had on no shirt and no shoes) and walked right behind us and puked all in the floor. So we got up, and tried to go to the piano bar. I had read such good things about it. It was like a tribal dance going on in there. I have never heard such hollering. So we leave there and are walking toward the show, and almost get knocked down by security. They had to break up the first of many fights during the week. It looked like a gang war on board. We went to the show and stood in the door for a minute until we saw a guy and girl in front of us. He had his hand up her skirt doing who knows what. We got disgusted and went to the room... it hadnt been made up.

Of a full week, our room was made up twice. One day and one night. I have never had that kind of service before. We always make friends with the room stewards, but we saw our girl one time. We had to hang up our towels so we would have dry towels to use. The couple times she did make up our room, we had HUGE long black hairs everywhere. In our bed, on our towels, across my toothbrush! I am one of those people that are really grossed out by hair, and I was about to puke!! :) One thing I thought was strange about that too, was that Bob Dickinson had sent us several things...our room was decorated Happy Honeymoon, Happy Birthday, we had a bottle of champagne, a bottle of wine, two cheese trays, and chocolate covered strawberries. You would think she would have noticed that and took better care of us... sorry I am rambling again.

The only thing we did all week was go to the art auction (Mark was awesome), and go to the casino (awesome again, I hit for $500.00, hubby hit for about $200). The rest of the time, we stayed in the room. We would go eat, stay out for a coulple, three hours, and go back. Thank god the Olympics was on! :) I can not put into words how afraid we were. It was like a gang war, the security had to patrol constantly. We had no idea what would happen if we went out. I have never seen so much fights and vomit.

Another complaint (I promise I will tell about the good in a minute) was the staff never seemed to work. (our first bad experience with CCL like this). We would eat breakfast at 8:30, go lay out, come back in for lunch at 12:30 and our dishes were still there. The upstairs in the Lido restaurant never had a clean table. There were never any clean cups, and there was trash all over the ship. Let me say again, cups every where, cigarettes put out in the carpet etc. Oh, and one night, there was a group of little boys opening the ketchup bottles and spitting in them. Luckily, a staff member caught them and was taking them to their parents. These kids were maybe 9 years old and was cussing him awful. They were using the F bomb, and GD. I about fell over!!

Ok, the few good things...

In Jamaica we went to Sunset Beach Resort. Well worth the $20.00 per person. The beach is really rocky in the middle, but down toward the end, it was perfect. The people were so friendly, and the beach was clean. If you had a drink, as soon as you were done, they would come take the cup from you. There were a lot of jelly fish... but they were neat to see. The food there was great as well.

In Cayman it poured (it rained in Jamaica too, but we still sit out and had a blast), so we just shopped. (We have cruised the Western itinerary about 8 times anyway)

In Cozumel, we went to Paradise Beach. AWESOME!!! It was a rocky beach again, but they were out there in snorkles and masks de-rocking the beach. The water was beautiful, the chairs awesome, and the floats were perfect. I got a float and went out in the water and cried with relief. Cozumel relaxed me so much after being so nervous and upset over our cruise. We had food... the salsa is to die for. Everybody on the beach came up to look at our food. It is presented like on a ship...pretty. We loved every minute of it. Then we went shopping of course. A perfect day!!

The art auction was great, we got several nice pieces. It was the one place we were ok. Let me say this... the ship is beautiful. I just wish we could have enjoyed it. The casino, and Gaugin's bar was very nice too.

I do not blame the crew on board. They were treated like dirt by the passengers. This is our first one where we have not made friends with the bar staff, the room steward, the waiters etc. They were not friendly at all. But if I had to deal with the bunch on the ship, I would have been hateful too. One girl told the cook at the grill to "take this back and melt the cheese, this aint Wendy's"

I am not a picky person, nor am I a snob, or predjudice. Like I said, I have cruised with Carnival several times, and never experienced this. Some things sound a little petty to me now, but on our honeymoon, it was the worst thing in the world. Luckily, we kept a pretty good atitude (I did call home crying several times though :( ) and found several things to laugh about. We have laughed a lot this week about some things. Sunday, when it was time to get off the ship, I told my husband if he didnt get me off right then, I was going to get in the floor and have a fit... at the time I was dead serious, now it is hilarious.

I did file a complaint with my Carnival rep, and they are looking into it. I dont want anything from them, I just want them to be aware, and maybe do a little bit better on the groups. I think I am done cruising. And that is a shame... it is what we did for every vacation. Sorry this rambled so much!! Happy cruising!

Hmmmm...wow. Well, uh...hmmmm....

First off, congratulations on your marriage and honeymoon!! I wish you both many many many happy years together!! :D

Truth be told, it is such a shame you weren't able to have the honeymoon you had envisioned, but at least you can find some humor in it all. You will find out that marriage itself (as well as life, in general, as I am sure you already know) sometimes takes humor to endure it. :p

Anyhoo, I am praying that your experience on the Conquest is far and few in between as we are sailing on her in Jan 2005. I can't imagine seeing vomit everywhere. The very thought of it turns my stomach. It's such a shame how people use their vacations as an excuse to forget their manners (if they had any to begin with).

Dirty dishes? Unclean room? No fresh towels? Hair on toothbrush (UGH)!

Interesting. I am curious to know what CCL in fact does for you (if anything) since you weren't pleased. I also have a question for you: why didn't you and yours exercise your rights in using the Carnival Vacation Guarantee? I think I most definitely would have done so if I were in that particular situation.

I am wondering, is there anyone else who has had such a bad experience on the Conquest? If so, lemme know!!! Believe me, I won't let it stress me out if you did (unlike many first time cruisers who read these boards). I plan on trying to enjoy each and every thing on our first upcoming cruise. And, if I happen not to like cruising, I get another shot at it come Oct 2005!! Ha! :p

Again, my apologies to you and yours not being able to fully enjoy your honeymoon cruise and congratulations!

Happy sailing,

T.

Thanks! My husband DOES NOT fly...under any circumstances... weird he married a travel agent!! So that is why we didnt use it. I wanted to. Like I said, all of my clients (I book a TON) have LOVED the Conquest. I think it was an off week. The ship is awesome, I think everybody had a bad attitude. I had some people just get back a couple of weeks ago who loved it. I think you should be ok. Good luck and have a great time!!

Wow is right! Sorry you hit a bad week. Did you find out who these groups were? Sounds like even the children were a mess, so I can just imagine the parents. Congratulations on your marriage!

Shungirl, What cabin were you in? We are on deck 8 on the 11/7/04 cruise & hope I get a good cabin steward. I am sorry you did not have a good cruise. Do you know what type of groups were on board with you? It is really bad when the other cruisers are the ones that make a cruise bad. I hope you will give Carnival another try. Let us know what Carnival has to say about your complaints.

Congratulations on your new marriage! I am so sorry to hear that you had so many problems on your cruise. I too would be interested to hear where those three groups were from. I would have been horrified to have to witness behavior like that. Unfortunately, like you said, Carnival really can't control the behavior of its passengers.

I was wondering if you ever complained to the pursors desk about your cabin steward. I certainly would have complained if I had a steward like that.

I hope Carnival takes your complaints seriously and looks into ways to prevent those types of issues from happening on future cruises.

We were also on the 8/22 trip and having been on 12 cruises this was far and away the worst. The cruise director Steve Cassel thought he must have been talking to 8 year olds with his noises and hand movements, very difficult to figure out just what he was talking about. He attempted to juggle one night and did not do a good job. We also had a night where the cabin was not cleaned or made up, what made the situation bad was I was put on hold at the pursers desk and then went down in person (now I have never been on a cruise where the line at the purser's desk was as long and as constant as this one), purser's desk sent a generic apology, the steward said Are you sure I didnt make up your cabin Give me a break

I made numerous comments to my wife about how dirty the ship was and how there were dishes all over, on the stairways I mean right in the middle of the stairs glassware etc.

The entertainment was poor at best, the magician really left something to be desired. etc etc

Now we did have a nice family vacation, and the above and there are many more are not gripes but just the way we saw the cruise.

First time on carnival and probably the last

Regards

Pete

So sorry your honeymoon and your love of cruising was basically ruined by a group of unruly passengers. Guess I'm lucky because I've never experienced anything like that on any of my four cruises. We were on the Conquest last November and everything was fantastic! We were on the Veranda deck and couldn't have been treated better by our cabin steward. We made so many friends on that cruise, staff and passengers, that I can't imagine how unhappy I would have been to experience what you did. But I also can't imagine anything ruining my love for cruising! Hope you give it another chance; nothing else is so relaxing, IMHO! Congratulations on your marriage and best of luck in the future.

Awww Pete - I'm sorry that your experience on Carnival did not live up to your expectations. I know that you planned this cruise for you and your family for a long time, and can just imagine how disappointing it must have been to have it fall so short. :(

Gosh that is just awful! I feel so bad for you! When I read threads like this it just reinforces to me that I don't ever want to cruise in the summer.

We were on the 8/15 sailing on the Conquest. Our cabin steward was wonderful (we were in cabin 8277). However, we did notice that in the buffet if a station had beverages, it did not have cups and visa versa and overall it was not as clean as other ships we have been on.

Other than our cabin steward, we did not feel the warmth and friendliness that we have experienced on our two sailing on the Spirit. It really didn't seem like anyone other than the cruise director truly enjoyed their job. Our dining room waitstaff was the worst we have ever experienced (we actually opted to eat in the buffet twice -- something we have never done on any of our other cruises).

Our room had a fairly good sized cigarette burn in the carpet and my parent's room had a big tear in the bedspread. The vacation was not spoiled by those few problems and overall the ship is beautiful, but having had such wonderful experiences on the Spirit I think we had pretty high standards.

Would I sail on the Conquest again-- no. Would I sail Carnival again -- yes, we are going on the Spirit in March for the third time!

Also, for any of you going to Grand Cayman -- we loved our stingray tour with Captain Bryans. We also did Sunset Beach in Montego Bay and can't say enough good things about the resort and what it had to offer for $20 pp ($10 for the kids).

Thanks so much for sharing your experience. I believe every word and it sounds awful! I sailed on the CONQUEST last July, and while I experienced nothing as bad as you did, there were large and unruly groups onboard and the ship felt VERY crowded and a bit dirty. We were even delayed with final disembarkation due to an alleged rape onboard. Too many kids (all drinking) and on the CONQUEST their area is right in the middle of the adult promenade. I really don't like that set up. CONQUEST was probably my worst Carnival cruise out of 10 or so.

I came to two conclusions after the CONQUEST. First is no more Destiny/Conquest Class ships for me. I don't like the layout and there seems to be too many bottlenecks and crowds of people. Second is no more Carnival cruises during the Summer. Too many teenagers drinking, getting into trouble, and disturbing my relaxing cruise. I say live and let live, but when others start infringing on your hard earned vacation with disrespectful and obnoxious behavior then I start to have a big problem.

Carnival redeemed themselves this January when my partner and I sailed on the CARNIVAL SPIRIT. It was one of the best cruises ever. Loved the ship, great crowd (not boring but not too rowdy either), nice ports, and terrific food and service.

It's the Spirit Class ships for me on any future Carnival cruises.

Please don't give up on cruises. Just be a little more selective about when you travel and I don't think you will encounter half the problems you did.

Best,

Ernie

Ernie, we were posting about the same sentiments at the same time. I have to add that when we spoke to a Conquest crew member about past sailings with Carnival, their eyes lit up when we mentioned the Spirit and they noted that they would love to work on her as she has a great itinerary (Alaksa, Hawaii and Mexico). That probably helps explain why the crew members on the Spirit are as happy as they are.

I almost felt sorry for the Conquest crew because the only deviation they get from their itinerary is when there is a weather issue and they have to make a port change -- although then they probably have to deal with angry passengers. It's not a win/win situation for them.

SB thanks we had a good family vacation as I mentioned but was surprised at how Carnival handled things in comparision to other lines. We were still on a cruise and that aspect of it was terrific

Well, just to add my view, we sailed Conquest 7/11/04. Our Cabin steward and his assistant were great (Veranda Deck). The ship was clean as a whistle and out dining room staff was great. The cruise was sold out, so lines, decks and shows were crowded, but I didn't notice unruly or drunk teens, etc.

Now I had a few complaints, but none to get upset about. The lines at the Purser's desk was always long. What a thankless job that must be. You don't go to that desk to tell them how wonderful things are.

Well, sorry some of you had bad experiences.

First off, thanks to everyone. I've been lurking and learning much from these boards for a few months now. (this is my first cruise) I'm shy and don't usually post on boards.

We are booked on the Conquest leaving this Sunday. I'm sorry that you had a bad time, shungirl.

I was planning on taking my camcorder around the ship to relive our cruise

during the year so I guess I'll see if they still have problems. Hopefully, the crew was just having a bad week.

Congrats on the marriage. We're taking the cruise for our 10 yr anniversary. Marriage is sort of like cruising, some weeks are better than other but it's a fun and interesting trip.

I guess my 3rd post will be a review of the Conquest when we get back.

Sounds like my honeymoon. Good news is you will always have a story to tell. We have been married 22 years and at dinner on our most recent cruise we entertained our kids with how awful it was.

One of the many many things that went wrong was that they switched out cruise ship altogether in the Greek isles- instead of 4 days on this lovely new vessel we were put on a converted freighter (they leased the good one out at the last minute to the president of france)! The DR was below the water line and over the engine room and everything shook. Our cabin was carpeted all right- even the walls and ceiling (for noiseproofing). OUr travelers checks were stolen out of our cabin... And this was just 4 days out for 2 weeks.

First my congratulations on getting married. We sailed 7/24 on the Conquest and had a wonderful time. Our cabin steward was wonderful and our waitress was great. There were lots of unsupervised "tweens" running loose. I feel Carnival brings this on themselves by allowing the 9 and up to be able to sign themselves out. I mentioned to our 8 year old she would not be allowed to do that next year. I got the feeling Carnival tolerated the kids to lure the parents in. Many of the parents seemed to figure the kid couldn't get off the boat so just let em roam.

Many people just don't seem to have any respect for anything any longer...no common courtesy, decency and just general decorum. We were fortunate to have a very nice family for tablemates and had a wonderful time...but anytime 3,500+ people are put in an area it proves to be interesting.

Congratulations on your marriage. I was sorry to hear that your ship had many boorish, rude, obnoxious groups of people on board. I sure hope we do not have that type when we cruise! I would have 'died' if I saw vomit in a public area(and it was not from seasickness!)-and more than once!! That is just disgusting!!! I also feel sorry for the other family that was on a first cruise and did not have a better experience too! People save all their extra money for a family vacation and then this happens!! It is also too bad about the bad service you had from the employees. I wonder if that happened because it was summer and out of New Orleans....?? Maybe Carnival needs some security guards!

Maryaske there are security guards and quite frankly, this was the most visible of security guards I have ever seen on a ship. But as someone mentioned, there was a and has been a loss of respect. On the elevator, group of kids behind me, older couple in the back, (I am 54), well we were all going to the lido deck, the door opens and the kids start to rush out, but wait I have not moved, they start to shove me and I said hold still, and let the other couple out first, you should have heard the kids whew I thought they were back talking on the street

First let me say congratulations on your marriage. Many Many happy years.

I am sorry about your trip, especially with it being your honeymoon.

I have to think that you must have hit an off week, We were on the Conquest last November and it could not have been better. Food was terrific, crew and staff were very nice and the ship was immaculate. In fact no matter what time of the day you could walk around and see somebody cleaning, vaccuuming, dusting, polishing.

Hardly any kids , of course this was still while school was in session , so that would explain that. And the kids you did see were pretty well behaved.

Again I am sorry that this soured you against cruising. I hope eventually you change your mind. As TA I am sure you know these things happen, not that that excuses what you went through, but there are other ships and other lines.

I need a clarification. I thought the reason there are no glasses at the drink station is because Carnival now has people who go around the buffet to serve you your drinks. Is this the case??
