SailorsMate Posted September 10, 2004 #1 Share Posted September 10, 2004 Anyone give me a clue as to why some folks would post "reviews" of ships that are clearly false??? Is it the internet "troll" syndrome?? I just read a review posted about the ship I was on last week- Obviously I was not with the poster, however, since I was on the ship I do know that some of the information posted are outright lies.-- Opinions sought. LynnH Posted September 10, 2004 #2 Share Posted September 10, 2004 If it were me, I'd post my review right under theirs. Find the post and add a thread to it. Perhaps people will ask questions that you will have the answers to and the other poster will not. (Perhaps it's a competitor?).
macdays1 Posted September 10, 2004 #3 Share Posted September 10, 2004 I have to agree. I wonder about that myself. I recently read a review that was so negative, and so untrue. I thought to myself that some people just have to complain about anything and everything. I know most of the things were not true, because I have recently been on the ship myself, and I am a repeat cruiser on the same ship. I did notice, however, that nobody responded to the post. I guess we're all in agreement on that one. If someone has something positive or negative to say about a cruise experience, I think all comments should be welcomed, as long as they are true, and not fabricated in ones mind. jkrislc Posted September 10, 2004 #4 Share Posted September 10, 2004
. . . I recently read a review that was so negative, and so untrue. I thought to myself that some people just have to complain about anything and everything. . .
I think it's important to keep in mind that people have different experiences and different expectations. We can all go on the same cruise, experience the same thing, and perceive the same things differently. Movie critics are a good example. Some you know to trust; others hate everything you love, so you no to see the movie if they bash it. I think the same holds true with cruise reviews. For example, I dislike Carnival and state so clearly even though it has been eight years and I hear they have improved. However, after my first cruise on RCI, Carnival just did not compare. Opinions are opinions. The have their own truth beyond them (from the reviewer's perspective) and they are neither right nor wrong. This doesn't mean I wont disagree, but I wont claim that you are telling a falsehood.
newmexicoNita Posted September 10, 2004 #5 Share Posted September 10, 2004 People do have different expectations, but we have all seen reviews and remarks that are either lies or border on the same. I think this is what the original poster is referring to. Reviews should be honest and yes, some will be negative and some ultra positive, but regardless of which way, the reveiw goes it should honest. SailorsMate Posted September 10, 2004 Author #6 Share Posted September 10, 2004 That is EXACTLY what I am talking about-- Differing opinions are to be expected- however, the reviewer I am speaking of said the pool was not drained until the final day of the cruise- and was filthy and filled with algae--- This I know not to be true because several of the evenings of the cruise I observed the pool being emptied, and one of the crew walking on the floor of the pool and steam cleaning it-- This is NOT opinion- it's fact- The entire tone of the review is "off" IMHO- I just wondered why anyone would bother. Read the reviews yourselves- I'm referring to the Crown. This site is very valueable as a source of information, too bad people think it is "fun" to post inaccurate information. TaGD Posted September 10, 2004 #7 Share Posted September 10, 2004 I agree with you Sailorsmate, only one night the pool wasn't drained and it wasn't green with algae. Where did you see that review?
jkrislc Posted September 10, 2004 #8 Share Posted September 10, 2004
. . . the reviewer I am speaking of said the pool was not drained until the final day of the cruise- and was filthy and filled with algae--- This I know not to be true because several of the evenings of the cruise I observed the pool being emptied . . .
Just to play devil's advocate, is it possible that the reviewer assumed the pool was not drained b/c he she did not see it done him- or herself? Is it also possible that he/she thought the pool was dirty (i.e., not drained) because it contained sea water, which is not as clear as fresh water. Now, I'm not condoning stating assumptions as facts, but it's possible that the reviewer didn't intentionally lie about what he/she reported and I personally am not prepared to level such an accusation unless I uncover a motive for the person doing so. SailorsMate Posted September 10, 2004 Author #9 Share Posted September 10, 2004 Hi Tom-- The review is found under the "review" section at the top of the page- Click on "review"- Then "Norwegian Crown" and then "Member Reviews" -- The review is posted twice and is right above mine- See if you agree that they are NOT describing the cruise we both were on... SailorsMate Posted September 10, 2004 Author #10 Share Posted September 10, 2004 JKRISLC- Go over and read the review- See if you think it appears to be "fair and balanced"-- BTW, the pool LOOKED clean to me everytime I looked into.

shoreguy Posted September 11, 2004 #12 Share Posted September 11, 2004 What a great review :D So good it is posted twice. Somehow I am glad they hated the cruise. Maybe next cruise they will bring enough shoes for everybody. I had to laugh it was if nothing else funny. I think next cruise they should book X. No problem getting into the dinning room in jeans and sneakers :) Maybe there was a reason the crew thought they might want a used lemon. I am glad they though the cabin steward did a great job since it was so much trouble to get the tip removed from the onboard account  Glad to hear they will not book NCL again. There is a positive in every review
SailorsMate Posted September 11, 2004 Author #13 Share Posted September 11, 2004 Amen to that....... Let them stay home and be miserable while the rest of us enjoy ourselves.
smeyer418 Posted September 11, 2004 #14 Share Posted September 11, 2004 You know its too bad she didn't find these boards before she went on the cruise. As some of you know I was on the Crown at the end of June and loved it. Was it perfect-no- but I had a great time. Also Bermuda is about using the beaches there. Also if I remeber correctly how to use the dine-a-ashore coupons was also explained in the freestyle daily....I didn't use mine but got my credit...its a nice program to be able to eat ashore for a minimum amount as Sailorsmate can attest. Somehow the fact she didn't do her homework before and relied on a mass market TA IMO speaks for itself...I suspect that the bad attitude by the staff(and it was wrong if it was)was in response to bad vibes... Perhaps the person is jaded. Maybe they are use to swimming in pools willed with Perrier (sp?), champagne, tiny bubbles, etc. And again, maybe there's just no pleasing them. Who knows? jkrislc Posted September 11, 2004 #16 Share Posted September 11, 2004
You know its too bad she didn't find these boards before she went on the cruise...
It is amazing how many people find these boards AFTER their cruise. You'll also notice that it's usually from people who HATED their cruise and are trying to find a place to vent. I've even seen reviews posted elsewhere that are dated a year or more after the person actually took the cruise.

richtersl Posted September 11, 2004 #18 Share Posted September 11, 2004 It does sound like the TA her group used did not do a good job of letting folks in her group know what "resort casual" means. Then again, all you need to do is read your docs beforehand. Like Shoreguy, I just had to laugh when reading that review. She made the pool sound like it was a frog pond. :p It's unfortunate that she had a bad time...but like all totally negative reviews, I would take this with a grain of salt. Nliedel Posted September 11, 2004 #19 Share Posted September 11, 2004 Remember some people get upset just because they can. I actually like ridiculous negative reviews.. the sheer entertainment value is great.
SailorsMate Posted September 11, 2004 Author #20 Share Posted September 11, 2004 I agree-- It was funny-- I just get frustrated because while I recognize we all don't see things the same way- which of course is expected- The internet does give us a great opportunity to share information with no "agenda"--like a sale of a trip- What I learned here BEFORE I went increased the pleasure of my trip greatly. I don't see the value of posting outright lies- whether the person enjoyed the trip or not cannot be measured- Posting that the pool was never cleaned is clearly distorting facts.. To each his/her own...
