blg Posted April 15, 2004 #1 Share Posted April 15, 2004 Y'all have been so helpful, I was hoping you could answer a couple more questions. What are the current gas prices on any or all of the islands? Also. we read somewhere that the first week in May is "Golden Week" in Japan and that Hawaii gets a plethora of visitors from there, and the prices are higher for almost everything that week. Is this true? Thanks again for any help' Barb
SweetEmi Posted April 15, 2004 #2 Share Posted April 15, 2004 Gas prices on the Kona side of the Big Island have been about $224 or so. Costco has it for $1.99. I haven't noticed a rise in prices here in Kona, but maybe I'm just not doing "tourist" things and therefore might not notice it. Plus, we aren't as big of a tourist destination as Oahu is. bobnsandi Posted April 15, 2004 #3 Share Posted April 15, 2004 EMI, only $2.24/gallon?!? If any station on Maui posted gasoline at that price (much less $1.99) they'd be lined up around the island. Here on the Valley Isle we're consistently @ $2.39/gallon for regular. That price has been pretty steady now. Yes, "Golden Week" usually means a big influx of visitors from Japan. And, this year's forecast is for a larger than normal group. That said, as a rule the vast majority of Japanese visitors rarely leave Oahu, so we don't see a big surge on the neighbor islands. In addition, most of the Japanese use escorted and planned tours, which does not include auto rental. Enjoy your vacation... ss June & Dec '03 Norwegian Star June '00 Columbia / Matanuska Mar '97 Star Clipper Oct '81 Azure Seas
SweetEmi Posted April 15, 2004 #4 Share Posted April 15, 2004 I just noticed I put two-hundred twenty-four dollars...ooops! Oh my, Sandi - awful! It used to be cheaper for gas on the Hilo side, but I haven't been over there for awhile so I don't know if that is still true or not. I hope it doesn't keep going up (though I don't think I'll get my wish) or else I might have to seriously think about telecommuting (if that is the right word). Emi NCL Star-08/31/03 in Hawaii! ahibunny Posted April 15, 2004 #5 Share Posted April 15, 2004 We lived on Maui 4 years ago and gas had gone up to $2.25 back then! Luckily for us, Oahu gas prices are cheaper. Regular usually runs about $2.03 to $2.09. If you have Costco membership, it's currently $1.86. I've nver seen the price of gas go up during Golden Week so I think you're safe! bobnsandi Posted April 16, 2004 #6 Share Posted April 16, 2004 Well, I guess I spoke too soon. I wrote my earlier post from my office this morning. On the way home this evening I noticed $2.429, so I guess we're heading toward that $224/gallon price Em... spleen93 Posted April 16, 2004 #8 Share Posted April 16, 2004 Maui consistently has the highest prices for gas amongst all the major islands (not counting places like Lanai that only has one gas station). Not sure why. bobnsandi Posted April 16, 2004 #9 Share Posted April 16, 2004 I wonder if the $0.05/gallon increase in the county tax bestowed by our County Counsel has any relevance? :-( June & Dec '03 Norwegian Star June '00 Columbia / Matanuska Mar '97 Star Clipper Oct '81 Azure Seas

spleen93 Posted April 17, 2004 #12 Share Posted April 17, 2004 We're going along the eastern seaboard - going up from NYC to Boston, Bar Harbor, and then up to Halifax, Sydney, Quebec, and then ending in Montreal. I haven't been to the eastern side of Canada before so looking forward to it. Thanks for asking!
