Freedom review 2-23-08

We sailed on the Freedom on the week of 2-23 and here are a few things that we will like to share. We had our daughter drive us to the port of Miami at 11:30 am and were inside the ship’s lobby by 12:00. The new terminal is very nice and the lines moved pretty fast.

I have read some of the complaints regarding the ship’s decor and colors. As one person described it … “the décor is really offensive…” I thought the ship was nicely decorated. Maybe the colors are a little loud but it still does not make it offensive. To those offended by the décor, you should have been there on lido deck at sail away party when two attention seeking jerks decided to come on deck wearing their male thongs with their private parts stuffed inside what looked like an elephant trunk while little kids were present. You would have probably jumped off the ship. ( Thumbs up to the security officer that kicked them out of the disco at night when they tried to come in with their girlfriends in their underwear. ) There is a place for everything and the night club was not one.

Our rooms were ready by 12:45. Our room steward was very nice and always available to help. I was impressed by the cleanliness of the ship. The staff in general was always smiling and attentive. Our best experience was at the Posh dining room. Our waitress Putri and her assistant Djaka were our favorite. They were funny, knowledgeable and treated us with the outmost respect and charm. I would not doubt it if this young lady eventually makes it to management.

The food was very good. Carnival has greatly improved on selection and taste. I did not like the pizza but there was always people standing at the line. We really enjoyed the Fish and Chips. The buffet lines moved pretty fast and there was always good variety.

We loved the shows at night. My favorite was the tribute to The Beatles; this show is a must see. The laser show is nice. The special guest Marcus Anthony had the audience on their feet dancing to Motown tunes. The big screen on lido deck is great. Even though I did not get to watch a movie at night, I saw lots of people with their blankets enjoying their movie.

The ports of call were beautiful as usual. Our time at San Juan was limited so we just took a tour of Old San Juan and stopped at Senior Frogs for a drink. At St. Thomas we took the water taxi to St John and went to Trunk Bay Beach and did some snorkeling. It was sad to see how the corals have gotten damaged from my last time there. At St. Marteen we rented a car and drove to Orient Beach. We rented chairs and umbrellas for $7.00 a piece. After that we went to Maho Bay and I was able to watch a few planes including a 757 land across the street. This beach is amazing. Being from South Florida, I found the water temperature at the beaches a little too cold for me, but I went in the water anyway.

We used the self debarkation. It was slow but it was due to a problem with US Customs.

Overall, it was a great vacation and we had a great time on the Freedom. It is a beautiful ship and even though we are contemplating trying RCCL Freedom Of The Seas, we will definitely continue to cruise with Carnival. I know I am leaving lots of things out but if your have any questions, please ask.

Thanks for writing your review, I enjoyed reading it. I'm also glad to hear some positive remarks about the ship's decor! I've seen pictures and I think she looks great. I'm sailing on her in January and love to hear positive reviews!

WAITIN4ACRUISE,

My sister booked the exact cabin you had on the Conquest, only on the Freedom. I know that the ships are exactly the same, as far as cabins. Can you tell me if you liked the position of your cabin, was there any noise from below? How was it being a little close to the elevators -any noise? Any other input or tips on this cabin would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks for your review. I can't wait to see the Freedom. I booked it for New Years, this time I booked because I want to see the ship, not for the ports.

The cabin was 2382, outside window. It was very quiet, no vibration above or below; however, you can feel vibration at the dinning room.

We were closed to the elevators. All we had to do was get on, hit 9, and we where right at the buffet. I guess because these elevators were at the back of the ship we did not notice any heavy traffic most of the time.

Formal nights were on Sunday and Thursday. The Captain reception was on Sunday at 7:15pm for late seating and 5:15pm for early seating.

Note: My parents has cabin 2370 inside and they complained to me about noise right next to them. After a well planned...FBI investigation LOL, I think that the room next to them is were they print the capers or inserts.

It sounded like an industrial printing machine constantly running at night.

Any more questions, feel free to ask.

I will post some pics after i figure out how the webshots thing works.

Yes Fred, that was my first lunch on board. The vegetables were fresh and the meat selections were chicken, pork and shrimp. They have three sauces to choose from. I did not like the black bean sauce but the spicy one was good.

We saw those idiots that were walking around with the thongs at the drill. They both came with the jackets on. We saw one guy and one girl at the drill. Nothing like looking for attention. We were on the cruise with you. We were on the 7th floor in 7233 & 7239. It was our first suites. We were in our rooms around the same time as you. I wasn't crazy about the fish & chips but liked the pizza. We loved the supper club. It was very good. We also had great service at the posh dining room. I thought the ship looked fine. It was kinda different but cool. A lot of people said it looked cool to the younger people. One lady said it wouldn't appeal to the older folks. I was right across from the guy who won $4,000 on the slots. He was playing the cards. 25 cents slots. He hadn't put in max. He would have won $8,000 if he had put in 4 quarters ( I believe). He was excited. Not yelling. It was good to see people winning. Casino host was wonderful. She was so nice. We had a great time on Freedom. Now looking to plan our next one.

Parrot, that room should be fine. There was nothing else after 2370, just that room.

Esther, i am glad you enjoyed the cruise as much as we did. My mother in law won $ 120.00 at the slots and my wife started screaming like she won the jackpot...lol
