bUU Posted September 26, 2004 #76 Share Posted September 26, 2004
For all of you who think the present offers from RCI are adequate compensation, consider the following:
Clearly you've had a tough time of it. However, I think the point many folks have made here, myself included, is that there is a leap you're making between how tough of a time you have had, and who should bear the cost of "making good" on the plans you've made. Don't let anyone tell you that what you've encountered isn't rightfully disappointing. The question is only a matter of where should that disappointment be directed. There is shared risk. As you agreed to when you accepted RCI's offer of a cruise vacation, RCI's share of the risk is that they would have to return the money you gave them (them), and therefore lose the revenue they would have booked for the service they were to render. That's their burden, and one they should unquestionably bear. Your arrangements with others, whether it be airlines, hotels, employers, house sitters, etc., are arrangements you make with them, and so if you're looking for compensation with respect to any of that, you must look either to the providers of those arrangements, if they've previously agreed to bear such risk on themselves, or whatever insurers you've engaged, if any, or look to yourself. Nliedel Posted September 26, 2004 #77 Share Posted September 26, 2004 If they were told they would get a refund, asked for and got the agents name and then the agent did not back herself up then the problem is with RCCL and not the cruisers. They were not looking for something for nothing, they were told they could get a refund and asked for what they were told they could get.. I am glad the OP is going on the cruise after all.. I think they will have fun... go with the flow and all that.. I just wish that RCCL's agent had stuck by her words, which the husband tried to confirm with her in the origanal phone call. jrm9999 Posted September 26, 2004 #78 Share Posted September 26, 2004
2. 50% off on another cruise. I've been on hold for hours with RCI customer service. Have been told numerous different things. First, I was told it had to be used for another Caribbean cruise. Last night I was told it could be used for any cruise of 7 days or less anywhere in the world. I demanded they put that in my reservation record and give me a print-out when we get on the ship. I'm now on the phone to make them e-mail that to me as well. Also, I was told last night that I had to book the next cruise in exactly the same stateroom categories in order to make use of the credit. I told them that was ridiculous. A supervisor told me that was incorrect and I can use the credit on any stateroom category. Also on the phone demanding that in writing. The one thing I do seem to have determined is it is a dollar credit -- that is, take 1/2 of the amount paid for the current NOS cruise (excluding taxes), and apply that dollar amount to the best price you can get on your next cruise. No one told me you have to book with the same travel agent. Just found that out reading this posting chain. So, I guess it's the best price you can get from your current travel agent. Great.
Having been on the 9/5 Mariner in a similar situation, I can tell you the rules when we used our credit. The future cruise discount is not exactly 50% of the fare for this cruise. How much you get out of it depends on what you book next. The 50% off is 50% off the price of your next cruise in the same level of cabin or less. So, for example if this cruise you are in a D1 and paid $1000.00pp, when you book your next cruise you will get 50% off of a D1 cabin or lower. So if you booked a D1 for a new cruise and the price is 1200.00pp, you get 600.00 off. If the new price was $800.00 you get $400.00 off. There are conflicting reports of whether the new cruise credit applies to the same category or less. I don't know what the discount certificate says if you wait to get one, because we used our credit before even getting one. What I can tell you is that when I booked, I originally booked a D1 for the new cruise. The loyalty ambasador looked up our current room and made a comment "your in a JS now, so no problem with a D1". I asked her about that and she said the 50% only applied to the same type of cabin or lower. When I got home, I had changed my mind and wanted a JS again, so I called Customer Service and when I told them I wanted a JS, they looked up the last booking to confirm we were in a JS and told me the same thing about same category or lower. I was led to believe that the 50% off would not apply if you wanted to upgrade on the new cruise, If that were true and I were in your shoes I would ask them to then credit me for the price of your existing cabin and apply it towards the higher up cabin. lovetocruiserccl Posted September 26, 2004 #80 Share Posted September 26, 2004 Thank God you changed your mind. When I think of all the people who are homeless or dead because of something totaly out of their control. Your problem is minor. I understand it's nerve racking when thing don't go as you planned them. but you are getting $250.00 on board credit and 50% off your next cruise. Don't sweat the small stuff. Get on board enjoy. Have a drink for me. Matter of fact several with you $250.00. Life is too short. Get Out There
goodml Posted September 27, 2004 #81 Share Posted September 27, 2004 Orangecallalily, I just read this thread beginning to end and I can't tell you how happy I was when I got to the part where you said you had changed your mind and were taking the cruise. It's great to see that after reading other opinions you were able to look at this from a different point of view and realize that it wasn't such a bad deal after all. Everybody has a meltdown now and again! I wish you and your dh a fabulous and safe cruise and anniversary. Book that next cruise while you're on board and take advantage of another shipboard credit. To maritimemare I hope you will also keep an open mind and have a great cruise. I'm really curious as to where you are staying for $350 a night:eek:. Is this for one room??? CRUZIN BRAD Posted September 27, 2004 #82 Share Posted September 27, 2004 I'm very tempted just to go home instead of taking the cruise, Well Maritime, I honestly think that would be the best thing for you to do. I am sure at this point you will not be happy with anything connected with this cruise. $350 per night is pretty steep for a hotel room. I would hope you had other alternative. But, hurricanes are unpredictable and situations change by the hour. I am sorry that guest service agents that sit behind a computer with head sets could not find the answer in the timely manor you expected. Is it really important at this point? With all they are dealing with, I am sure your "demand" is on top priority. Should they have come back through the hurricane to pick you up regardless of the storm? Keep in mind, none of this is the fault of this nor any other cruiseline, airline, hotel, or any other company. They owe you nothing. This is done for good will to customers. People have been hurt and lost a great deal that were not able to stay in $350 hotel rooms and "demand" written documentation for a future vacation and complain that they may miss 2 days at sea. Mike&Nancy1539128145 Posted September 27, 2004 #83 Share Posted September 27, 2004 I think Maritime said she was traveling with a group of 10, and paying for everyone. Hence, 2 rooms and lots of mouths to feed.
OrangeCallaLily Posted September 27, 2004 Author #84 Share Posted September 27, 2004 Hi all! I just want to tell Maritime that I totally understand where you are coming from. It is hard to "go with the flow" through all of this... but hang in there! Everyone else posting to Maritime, please understand there is a lot of stress when there is such unknown... esp when you are away from home, stuck in a hotel room - it is hard to keep a clear head sometimes in these situations. My hubby and I are trying to look at this in a positive way - we took a 4 hour nap today... we never get a chance to do that at home, we are always so busy. We are still getting a little stir crazy in our hotel, so we are deciding to make the move to the Orlando area tomorrow (we are in Clearwater now). I just hope and pray that we can get onboard on tuesday.
dobie Posted September 27, 2004 #85 Share Posted September 27, 2004 So your hotel is OK? No more power outages? I've been thinking of you and all of the other stranded guests all day today....I'm off to the Vision 2 weeks from today in the Pacific Ocean. Last year we ended up in San Francisco, Ensenada, and Catalina because there were 2 hurricanes in Mex. We weren't thrilled, had to buy warm clothes because we had none, but we were on a ship, not working, and still had fun. There was a shipload of other passengers with not the same attitude....glad you are keeping your positive one. Hey, it's something to tell the grandkids....hope you are taking pictures... Jacquelyn11 Posted September 27, 2004 #90 Share Posted September 27, 2004 Mariner of the Seas, normally scheduled to depart Sunday on a seven-night sailing, will delay its return from its current sailing until Tuesday and will now return to the Port of Miami. Royal Caribbean will transport guests from the Port of Miami to Port Canaveral and the Orlando airport at the conclusion of this sailing. In addition, the ship will leave on its next sailing at 8 p.m. local time Tuesday from Miami and sail a modified itinerary. The ship will make port calls in Nassau, Bahamas, on Wednesday; Cozumel, Mexico, on Friday; and return to Port Canaveral on Sunday. Complimentary transfers from Port Canaveral to the Port of Miami will be offered as follows: Orlando International Airport: Between 9:30 a.m. and 4:00 p.m. from Terminal A and B. Port Canaveral: Between 9:30 a.m. and 4:00 p.m. from Terminal 10. Fort Lauderdale/Hollywood International Airport: Between 10:30 a.m. and 6:00 p.m. from Terminal 2. Guests who choose to drive directly to the Port of Miami will be transported back to Port Canaveral at the conclusion of their cruise, should they require it. Guests who sail on this cruise will receive an onboard credit of $500 per stateroom and a certificate for a 50 percent discount on a future Royal Caribbean sailing of seven nights or less, which departs on or before December 15, 2005, excluding holidays. Guests booked on this sailing who cancel their cruise will receive a letter of credit for the amount paid for the cruise portion of their sailing. Due to the aftermath of Hurricane Jeanne, this itinerary is subject to change. From Port Canaveral 5 p.m., September 27, 2004 PORT CANAVERAL — Small vessels today were permitted through the Canaveral Lock and Barge Canal to re-enter Port Canaveral. However, the channel remains closed to ship traffic pending completion of harbor surveys and repositioning of navigational aids. Assessments show several buoys out of alignment and some additional shoaling at the entrance to the channel. Dredge operations are expected to resume Tuesday morning, subject to wind and wave conditions. The project to restore the channel depth nearly was complete before Hurricane Jeanne caused additional shoaling. "These certainly have been trying times for all of us, but as in the aftermath of Frances," says Stan Payne, Chief Executive Officer of the Canaveral Port Authority. "The U.S. Coast Guard, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Canaveral Pilots Association, and the Port Authority are working together with us for a quick and safe re-opening of the harbor." Repairs also began today on some cruise terminal facilities that received minor water and roof damage. Power also has been fully restored throughout the Port. The busing of cruise passengers from Port Canaveral to South Florida ports is expected to continue tomorrow because of the Port’s closure to ship traffic. The process today went smoothly and without any major problems. Passengers should direct questions to the individual cruise lines. Hope everyone has fun on their cruise! nosnobunny Posted September 29, 2004 #92 Share Posted September 29, 2004 Blizzards have far less impact, IMHO, than hurricanes. Blizzards don't meander around the region for a week or two at a time, and generallly cause less damage to regional infrastructure. Excuse me??? Tell that to the people of eastern Canada who had no hydro and thick ice for over two weeks a few years ago. One thing about a blizzard is that you may not have any warning. Beth
sunie55 Posted September 29, 2004 #93 Share Posted September 29, 2004 I'm sorry, but I'm kinda new to this site, but I have to say that I have been reading threads such as this and I have had to pick myself up off the floor several times. Not to bash anyone, and I certainly don't consider myself the smartest person in the world---but what gives???? You book a cruise during HURRICANE season....then complain when plans fall thru because of a hurricane???? You don't take insurance....and complain when you don't get your money back??? With 4 hurricanes, the poor customer service reps must be going crazy....(who would want THAT job nowdays) and you flip out when you're on hold???? Quite frankly, I can't believe all the things the cruise lines are offering....50 per cent off, ship board credits, etc. If I TAKE A HUGE GAMBLE and book a cruise in January and can't fly out because there is a blizzard and JFK is closed.....its MY fault, not the cruise lines, and I would be grateful for anything the cruise line would offer. You've got to have some degree of common sense and personal accountability.

tnjdaniel Posted September 29, 2004 #95 Share Posted September 29, 2004  Wow, those of you who are complaining about RC Customer Service should know our story. We were scheduled to go on a cruise on the SOS Sept 6-10 of this year. We knew there was a hurricane coming but decided to go to Florida anyway on Sat., to make sure we were down there if the ship went out. We kept calling the RC cust service line and they kept telling us that the ship WAS scheduled to sail. We spent the night in Jacksonville, we had a group of 22 people there from our church going with us, we all made the trip knowing that they were telling us the ship was going out as scheduled. We even called them again Sunday afternoon around 2:00pm and the recording said YES, the ship was going out, but would leave port alittle late, around 10pm. Well, someone else in our group decided to call an actual live person to make sure and at 3pm, we were told the sailing was CANCELLED!! Well, we saw on the website where RC was giving all the other cruises whose trips were cut a day short an onboard credit and a 50%off of their next cruise... all we are getting is our money back! They arent offering to pay for our rooms, no 50% off, no credits NOTHING! The was I see it is that we were the ones most inconvenienced by all this. At least all the others got to go on their vacation. Then to top it all off, only 2 people in our group received a call from someone telling them that the cruise was cancelled and they didnt get that call until Monday morning! Talk about customer no service! So now we are waiting for our credit so we can book another cruise the end of Oct. Talk about frustrating!
