Renting a car in Playa del Carmen?

Does anyone know if it is possible to rent a car , drive to Tulum and see the ruin and then some beaches? We are family of 4 and have scheduled quite a few tours on other days and thought this might be a place where we could relax a bit. In port from 7 am -7pm.

We just returned from Calica on the Carnival Insipration. Yes, you can rent a car with Executive which is right at the port of Calica. Take a look at my post, "Tulum ruins without Carnival" There is a lot of advice about car rentals. After reading the comments we decided to book with Edventures. They picked us up right at the port in a small van for less than a car rental with all the insurance. We went to the ruins of Tulum (impressive, but hot and with dozens of bus loads of tourists), but the best part was the snorkeling and dining at the beach at Akumal. Try contacting them. They can customize a day for you and it may be less stressful than driving in Mexico. Our Edventure day really was the best day of our vacation.
