Help with shore excursions especially train ride

don't know the date of your cruise but we just returned from a HAL cruise with a stop in Puntarenas. People on our ship did the train/mangrove and loved it. I didn't see any police action and our passengers were walking around the town just fine. We did a Sarchi tour which was pretty safe.

We just returned from the Island Princess RT from LA 19-day PC cruise. We took the Mangrove/Train ship's tour in Punterenas, Costa Rica. We particularly enjoyed the mangrove part of the tour - we saw monkeys, crocodiles, many different species of birds, iguana, even a raccoon! The train ride was interesting. It is a jiggly about 45 minute ride through the countryside where you will see how the locals live - very poor conditions. The train has windows open on both sides next to all of the seats, no AC. I think you could go out between cars to take pictures, but we didn't as we felt it was safer to stay seated! I'm glad we did it but wouldn't do this combination again. I believe there was a Mangrove/McCaw Sanctuary combination offered, and we would do that next time. We felt perfectly safe on all of our tours and in every port, but we didn't wander far from the ship on our own in any of the ports.
