Hi I am new to these boards and to Crystal and to cruising!!! This will be my very first trip...I am a recent widow and heading out alone. I am going on the Serenity on the Golf theme...there is also a wine group I think on this trip.

Anyone else booked on this trip? Any tips for newbies? Has anyone done the Crystal Golf trips and can offer tips....other than keep your head down.

Welcome to the Crystal board and to cruising. While things are a bit quiet at the moment, you will fnd this to be a friendly place. If this will be your first cruise you are starting with the best. Please don't hesitate to ask lots of questions. If someone here doesn't know the answer they will know where to direct you to find it. The only "silly" question is the one you don't ask.:D

While we have not done the Golf Theme cruises we do have some experience with the onboard golf pros. They are all PGA teaching pros and they are very good. Assuming you plan to play, you will find that Crystal books some very fine courses in each port of call and the golf excursions, like everything else they do, are very well run.

Thanks..yes..I am planning on playing golf...it has given me a real focus..getting my game pulled together if we golfers can ever really do that. I figured by joining the golf program it would give me another avenue to meet people...generally I find golfers a pretty friendly group..unless it is a group of guys not interested in playing with a woman.

It is funny I have a trip to Cabo planned in April and going to Maui with my kids for a week in June..but I am totally consumed with the cruise and counting the days until this wonderful new experience. Hope I don't build it up too much

Welcome Karen to the Crystal Board. Almost everybody can go to Maui or Cabo but it's the very special person that gets to go on a Crystal cruise. Don't worry about building your cruise up to much and being disappointed. It will be the best time of your life well almost:) I do worry a bit with your meeting singles. Yes there will be other singles on board. If you are friendly and out there you'll have no problem meeting lots of wonderful people on Crystal including those single cruisers. Remember a lot of those nice officers you meet will be single:). Go to the shows, casino, kareoke, dance lessons, trivia, tea, bistro, pool. Remember it's tough to meet people in your room. Don't miss any parties either they are very nice and a lot of the guests attend. They have Taylor Made golf sets on board I don't know if they have women's clubs but someone will answer that ? for you. The golf pro and the conceirge can set up golf at any stop on the cruise. Many of the regulars here have lots of Crystal Cruises so ask away someone will know the answer or know whom to contact at Crystal. We also know all the email addys to contact Crystal with just about anything you can come up with. Get excited about this cruise you are starting at the top. You can't get any better than Crystal just ask us:) Ernie

Karen - I'm sure you will have a great time. I'm also a solo cruiser and my first Crystal cruise was the golf theme Rome to Dover trip in the summer of 2006. I had a fabulous time both golfing and onboard the ship. There was not a very large contingent of golfers onboard but they were all very friendly and we mixed around playing groups at the various locations. We had two golf pros onboard plus a golfing celebrity (on my trip Ken Venturi) and apart from all the usual parties you get on a Crystal cruise the golf group had addtional ones too (including one at which prizes for the competitions, etc. were awared in the Captain's quarters).

Advice given already is all spot on, you'll love Crystal and return hooked - just like the rest of us are!! I've met and become friends with several of the posters on this board (including Ernie and his wife), all of whom it's been a pleasure to spend time with. Do not worry at all about travelling solo as the officers, crew and passengers all make you very welcome.....

As Ernie said, anything you need to know, just ask....

Thanks for the great responses and words of encouragement. I did read something on the Crystal site about encouraging golfers to bring their own clubs...using the Luggage service of the moment...Anne it is nice to hear another woman has done the golf trip. I enjoy playing with everyone and am looking forward to actually playing in Europe. I hope the weather will still be a little on the warm side. Since my first cruise isn't a deckchair type of trip I will have to work on planning one of those too.

I will hit all the parties and am generally good about talking and meeting people....I won't be hiding out in my room. But I not a late person I will have to learn to nap...so I can make it to these parties.

Karen - I'm sure you will have some warm weather on your cruise. I once went on holiday to the Canary Islands in November and it was lovely - even deckchair weather on many days but at that time of year the days are shorter and it does get cooler in the afternoons. If memory serves me correctly Crystal contacts all those signed up to be a part of the golf programme (you have to pre-reserve the golf excursions) well in advance of sail date and emails out a questionnaire. I think they asked for your home club, confirmation of handicap and whether or not you would be taking your own clubs, or need to rent them. If you need to rent then they have some sets onboard or they will arrange rental from the golf courses you play at. I took my own with me as I flew with Emirates Airline from Dubai to Rome and back from the UK to Dubai and certainly for those of us who are UAE golf association members they do not charge for taking your clubs as checked in baggage. I booked a Crystal transfer from the airport in Rome to the ship and a representative met me in the baggage claim area, collected my suitcases, clubs, etc. and took them out to a waiting car. Once at the ship the clubs were handed over to the Concierge and throughout the trip they were kept in a luggage store and brought out/taken back whenever required..

I'm not a late person either but late seating dinner does work best with this programme as, in my case at least, some of the courses we played were quite a distance from the ship and we were quite late getting back to the ship on a couple of occasions. I was on the 7 o'clock seating as it was the summer they had the 'European' timings and on at least two occasions I had to switch and join a table for the late seating as we weren't back in time to shower/change and get to dinner on time...That said, I had a great time, the group were a lot of fun and we even had the Concierge book golf for some of us at a port where no golf was arranged so we could spend more time together...I have no doubt you'll have a fabulous time and like I did, will be making a future booking before you get off the ship at the end of your trip....

Hi Karen and Anne,

Just wanted to add a little info for your future cruises. When we were on the Serenity last October/November, the ship started something new for singles. It was "Dinner for Eight" in Prego. They set up a large round table and invited singles to dine together on certain nights. I thought it was a wonderful idea. Hopefully, they'll keep doing this to make it easier to meet people.

Karen -- I'm from the L.A. area also -- live in the hot Valley!!!

Hi Karen,

We are almost neighbors -- I live in Encino. My kids live in Calabasas and it was 116 degrees last July in Woodland Hills and Calabasas on my granddaughter's birthday.

I'm sure you have read all about the wonderful service on Crystal's ships. You will have a great cruise!!!!
