Anyone ever....

Has anyone here ever booked a cruise the day of sailing? We live in the Tampa area and thought it would be neat to do a very last minute cruise. I've heard of people packing there bags and heading to the port and asking if there were any cabins still available and getting a great last minute deal. I called Carnival today to find out if you can really do this and they said that you used to be able to go right on board to the pursers desk and check with them. I guess that was back when security was not so tight and visitors were able to go on before the ship sailed. They told me that it is still possible to get a cabin the day of departure, but that you do it by calling in. He said that there is a waiting list and that if there are alot of people wanting cabins, but only a few available cabins, the price could be high, but if there are still alot of cabins and only a few people wanting them you can get a really great deal.

Has anyone done this, and how good of a deal did you get???
