Noordam Review 3/19

Just back yesterday, got the laundry done and the suitcases emptied, so I thought I'd post a little. The cruise was great. Then again aren't they all? We were delayed a few hours boarding because of the storm the ship hit the night before. Better we were delayed than having to experience the rough seas the people getting off had. Still was kind of rough the first two nights and a lot of people were sea sick. The ship was quiet because so many stayed in their cabins the first sea day.

The first two things we did after boarding were signing up for the the cooking classes and the hydro pool and spa. The Guest chef was Gabriel Claycamp and he was wonderful. We signed up for his French class on the second sea day. The staff was not prepared for this and we were 35 minutes late getting started. We didn't mind because the chef kept us entertained. We got chef jackets instead of the aprons we were supposed to get. Because of starting so late we didn't get to finish the class because of Good Friday mass was to take place there. The priest was there to set up for the mass and we had a pork roast in the oven. A little embarrassing. So they gave us another class on Wednesday. Caribbean cooking. The food was wonderful, the class fun and the chef amazing. Can't wait to visit him in Seattle.

The spa was the best and worth every penny extra.

The meet and greet was nice but had to cut it short because a lot of people didn't feel well because of the rough seas. It was fun meeting all the people we spent months getting to know here on Cruise Critic. And the rest of the cruise it was fun seeing all these people around the ship. Speekertosuites set up a cabin crawl and that was fun. A group of us CCers started in our cabin, the small one but an aft balcony, then went to 4 different suites and ended up in the penthouse suite where Chuck and Carrie had drinks and food for us. Supper nice of them. Their suite was wonderful. They were also in our cooking classes and we enjoyed spending time with them.

We had late dinner seating and had great table mates. Two couples from London and the other couple from Vancouver. We plan to keep in touch. The food was great as well as the Wait staff. I can't ever remember eating that much food in my life. Robin, my weight watchers coach will not approve.

The only dept. we thought lacked was the night life. There wasn't much unless you were under 30. Very little dancing. The disco never played disco, only hip-hop. I can dance to most anything else. Piano player only played when we were at dinner so we never got to hear him. The only place hopping at night was the casino and we are not big gamblers so that didn't hold us too long.

More later.:D

I agree with all that you said. As for the night life I felt it was a little lacking compared to our last two HAL ships. We did go to the Senior Prom in the Crow's nest where they played our kind of music. I even managed to win the hula hoop contest and DH did an Elvis imitation. It was fun and we were hoping the Crow's nest would have dancing like that every evening. the Northern Lights seemed empty everytime we checked it out. But it was still a wonderful cruise and we had a great time! Sorry we missed the cabin crawl. Bob told us it was very nice.

Don't know where we will cruise from next year but we don't like to fly anymore so we may drive down to Florida and try one from there. HAL is a great cruise line and we've enjoyed each cruise we've taken with them. Sure wish they would stay up here in the North for all of us.
