Sick Child-Familythrown off ship (merged)

Recommended Posts

Sorry, I HAVE been in this situation on a ship. And when your baby is sick you don't complain because you are only given 10 minutes to pack!!!!! You grab your stuff and get your butt to the ambulance.

If you know them in real life, please advise them to get some priorities. I won't even comment on the lack of insurance or a passport, we'll just call that live and learn. But my biggest problem is that they stopped at the TV station on the way home to complain about the cruiseline.

It's called accepting responsibilty. They should thank their lucky stars that they didn't have a dead child, not just a sick one.

Well said!

If the family acted the way they did this time and got away with it since RCI paid them for everything, odds are they will try it again. Whether on RCI or another line, they're conditioned to think the same thing will happen. That's why I said they should be banned. That might also be why RCI reimbursed them for the cruise instead of giving them a cert for a future cruise.

If it was any other cruise line, the family would have received partial vouchers towards a future cruise. MARAPRINCE

Maraprince, I think that Paul may have good insight into why they were reimbursed instead of being given future cruise certificates!

The family made the entire thing into a huge PR bonanza for themselves, so your statement is pretty hypocritical. They go to the press and get so-called "reporters" to basically call RCI evil villians in this scenario. They get lawyers involved. They use what can only be called hyperbole to describe their story. They take no responsibility for the situation.

No, I'm far from perfect, but yes, I think I have the right to judge this family because they are the ones who put themselves in the public eye and under scrutiny. They want only their "story" reported and only the way they want to spin it.

I wouldn't call it hyperbole, beachchick. It really amounts to LIES - at best, omissions of truth.

I agree, but because I wasn't actually there, I thought I should use a "gentler" word. Omissions of truth at a minimum; probably outright lies.

I read something here on Cruise Critic that the family was told to come to the ship's doctor at around 7. They didn't come until 10:30? I"ll bet they never thought they would be asked to leave the ship and in fairness, I'm sure they never thought the baby needed any more than some medicine. However, I'm surprised that RCI is paying so much to this family. These are all things you take a chance with. If you travel without travel insurance or a pass port...you KNOW you are taking a chance. RCI has chosen NOT to reimburse people for many other incidents and this doesn't make sense they would choose to pay for the passengers negligence.

Me, too. I watched it the first day this was posted with the link. I even commented that there are two other boys in the film, so the "family of five" seems to have been Mom, Dad, two boys and baby Zoe.

No real point, I'm just curious what anybody else thinks about the words used in the video. News channels used to report the news fairly objectively telling what really happened. Today, the facts just get in the way of a good story and there seems to be a contest to see who can use the most inflammatory words. And the sad thing is they don't care what the facts are.

I sent a followup email to Channel 10 and have not received any response. I didn't expect any, but I'm ever hopeful. No attempt to give RCIs side of the story by anyone but Cruise Critic and FOX.

Thanks for the link, I just got back on thread to catch up today. These people are unbelievable and I wish RCCL had not given them one stinking penny but I understand why they did. It's called "GO AWAY." Idiots.

Wouldn't it be nice to be able to check their seapass account and see exactly what they bought during that 4 hour time span before they took the baby to the doctor?

Ha ha, that would probably be pretty interesting.

If I am sick, my first thing is to seek medical assistance -- not wait until I am so sick that I cannot do anything. Pet owners in a similar situation would have rushed their dog/cat to the vet immediately. With both ends of Zoe active, how much longer was the family going to wait until they sought medical help?

Big time lapse from when they were told to report to Medical. Did they fear being confined to their cabin? Or, rather did they go and eat and watch the show before appearing at the doctor's office?

It just amazes me how people can judge one family and their actions and not know them at all and just believe a statement released by a company who is going to do everything to not look like the bad guy. The company has major PR people to form statements just so that they do not look bad, regardless of what the people involved look like. I personally know the Cortes family and know that they are not lying people. None of you know what was going on with that family between the time they called and they took Zoe to the dr on board. But I am sure that all of you are just perfect and always live perfectly so you have the right to judge them.

Go tell the Cortes family that many formed their opinion prior to RCI releasing a statement. The opinion was formed based on experience with RCI and cruise lines in general. The RCI statement just confirmed that opinion.

Money or the possibility of a financial reward is a funny thing. It makes out of the most honest people somewhat dishonest people. All it takes the suggestion from a friend to call a lawyer and there are many out there who give the law profession a bad name.

Plus the people who turned that into a PR stunt are your 'honest friends'. Nobody else. Didn't figure that the interview would propagate through the Net eh?

Whether they thought they would be asked to leave the ship or not, if your baby is sick enough to make a phone call about her, then even if you thought she just needed medicine, wouldn't you get the medicine as soon as possible, instead of waiting, with a sick child, until you had had your dinner and probably been to the late show!! When my kids were/are sick, I want them treated as soon as possible.

I'm waiting for a rash of stories about sick kids on ships. Keep an eye out for a run on ipecac (sp) purchases.

The script has already been established. The parents story was almost verbatim with the one the old man and his son used when they were "kicked off" the Carnival ship. I have the feeling we're going to hear about more "cruises from hell" and the media will lap it up.

That is exactly what I always point out to these type of stories. It doesn't matter what it is about, be it booze smuggling, "cash and carry" out of the casino etc. I always read "why do you care?" and" what is it to you?" But eventually the majority will pay dearly. Establish the script, a blue print, and it evolves.

What really gets me upset, is that we bought the insurance, got the passports so that we could be prepared. Stupid me.....all I have to do is make a joke of myself and my family, conjure up some sob story...presto..money in the bank. They think they got some huge corportation to pay money, but what they really did was steal from all the honest people who have their stuff together. The cost of operation is always passed on to the consumers. There is this guy on the disney board, whining about how his poor wife is sick, was quarantined, wants something back because everything was ruined. I guess he saw the Cortez video...too bad they wern't "kicked" off the ship:mad:

Ipecac induces vomiting. It's usually used when a child has swallowed something they shouldn't to try to force it back up before it does too much damage.

Thanks for the explanation.

Wouldn't put that far from that family. Obviously they weren't too concerned and just did stuff between 7:30 and 11:20pm.

As in medications or poison, not an object. You probably meant that, but still, don't want someone giving this to a kid who swallows an object that could cause even more problems coming back up!

Can I take that as a compliment? :D

Actually, when it comes to human behavior regarding accountability and responsibility these days, I am. And I'm "only" in my 40s. I scare myself thinking what I'll be like in 30 years!

Yes, you can. I meant it that way.

I'm 66, so you know what you have to look forward to. ;)
