Only on ship few hours.....slip..wet floor..ouch

Recommended Posts

Would you flaming believe it.....my mum and stepdad on the Brilliance today and mum slipped on wet marble floor and now has swollen knee and has had to see nurse and doctor.Heck they only got on the ship a few hours ago and it hasn't even left port yet and ouch ouch mum hurt.

This is only first day of 12 day cruise......what a disappointment for them,I really wanted them to have a fabulous cruise with RCCI but not off to good start eh.Thank goodness for medical insurance, but don't know how this works if it is the ships fault.Would appreciate advice here.

Thanks

Liz

Ouch! I hope nothing was broken! This seems to be a problem on a lot of ships. Wet slippery floors equal falls. It happened to my DH on our last cruise. They wanted to take him to the doctor, but he refused. His knee was sore for a few days, but it didn't keep him down. Hopefully your mum can rest for a couple of days and enjoy the rest of the cruise. Tell her to watch out and see what the ship says about taking responsibility.

I'm sorry this happened, my mother actually broke her foot on our last cruise, I know what a bummer it can be to be injured on vacation!!

Slips are very common on cruiseships, probably one of the #1 complaints (the floors around the pool area are really very slick). Also, women that aren't used to wearing heels in the DR tend to slip alot. We saw one poor elderly woman on our May cruise that slipped and cracked her head on the marble in the Dining room, it was horrifically sad. :( When we ate in the specialty restaruant on Glory, I could not believe how slick the floors were, DD had to hold my hand and help me walk, it was that bad!! Be careful, wear the right shoes, watch where you are walking, and take it slooooooooooooooow.

I am not sure where it happened on the ship,my text says wet marble floor....as they have eaten in the windjammer..perhaps it was there...only guessing at the moment.....as I havent been on the BOS I cant say where it might have happened.

An explanation of your comment would be kinda nice.

Thanks everyone else for their sympathy.I have told mum to make sure she gets a written report from the ship for her insurance if so required although I believe if it is the ships fault they should not be charged for medical expenses, but maybe I am wrong.

Good job mum wears low shoes or it could have been worse eh

cheers

I don't even pack heels for a cruise - everything is flat and, preferably, rubber soled (including my beaded sandals for formal night!)

Tell your mum to immediately check with customer relations as to how to go about filing a formal complaint - at least this will put the incident on official record should the injury prove serious enough to warrant legal action when she returns - keep copies of everything and TAKE NAMES. Having said that, I hope her knee heals promptly and that she has a wonderful trip.

Thanks Geri

I have e-mailed their TA to let them know what has happened also, hoping they will check on her before ship leaves Barcelona. This cruise is for my stepdad's 75th birthday later this week,I had been so excited for them to be going on this ship, they normally go on Cunard.I had told them they would love the ship and the people who cruise on it. I feel a little guilty now that I persuaded them to go on it,sounds daft maybe but I feel bad that I cant help them being so far away.I am sure the CC'rs they meet at the M and M party later will look after them for me :D

Setting 2001 The Radiance of the seas Maui, Hawaii 1:45 am tender station on deck 2. We have just woken up after a 2 hour catnap after attending the old Lahaina luau with unlimited cocktails, dinner and the show. We need to get to the pier to meet the operator of the bike ride down Haleakula volcano. I am in tennis shoes and jeans. I step on the first step of about 8 down to the tender, and it is wet. Next thing I am flying until my bottom decided that it wanted to land on the bottom step. Thank goodness I was fairly young. The security guys go running to me, and ask if I am alright. I am embarrassed to be a klutz and I tell them I am fine go away, thank you. Talk about a sore black butt. Ouch! Everyone needs to be careful as heck as you do all sorts of relatively harmless things, especially if you are a little older, and sometimes the shoes don't matter at all.

Hi Liz,

We have been on the Brilliance and it is a beautiful ship so you did not steer your parents wrong. It was an accident and could have happened anywhere. When they went to the ship doctor hopefully they said she fell on deck - possibly on the crew saw it happen or was close by. An officer should have come to complete an accident report.

Maybe this will all turn out okay. Perhaps some ice treatment and a day of resting the leg will reduce the swelling. A lot of recovery can occur over night so hopefuly she will improve over the next few days and be able to enjoy the cruise. I know we all want our cruises to be perfect. I have heard of people falling in the shower/tubs - breaking their hips and having to be to be taken off ship at first port. It could have been worse. Realize that does not help much but with the right frame of mind they can still enjoy their 12 day cruise!

Oh - I think klfhngr was referring to her bringing a lawsuit and getting a sizeable settlement in the form of stock. Thus becoming a part owner.

Hope your mum heals quickly!

Thanks, oops smiley won't work.....Had a text few minutes ago to say reports all done,I have told mum to make sure she has a copy. They were heading off for early dinner and eager to meet their tablemates,so hopefully hear from them later.I have e-mailed RCCI stating my concerns but alas no reply from them.

I am sure they will have a wonderful cruise,as the first stop is Villefranche which they have been to before mum will probably rest poolside with a book and cups of tea ! The main places they want to see are in the second part of the cruise so hopefully mum will be ok then.

Thanks again

While they are tucking in to Chicken consumme on the BOS(usual first night soup) I will go have my sausages for dinner!! haha

How terrible for her to be injured on vacation. I hope your Mum will be alright. As posters above have said, this is hardly uncommon on ships. It serves as a reminder to all of us to be careful and wary of wet/slick floors. Again, I sincerely hope your mother will be ok and be able to enjoy her cruise.

An explanation of your comment would be kinda nice.

I think what klfhngr meant by the comment was that a lawsuit on the slip and fall would yield owning part of the cruiseline from a lawsuit. Unfortunately, because the cruise ships are usually based in locations that will not hold them culpable for injuries. I hope you can get them to take care of the expenses.

Please no-one take offense to this .....but why the heck are some on about lawsuits? We in the UK do not sue some at the drop of a hat or a butt on the floor. Now my USA buddies don't go all huffy on me when I say that please :D

All I am concerned about is my mum's health (she is 69) and I just want RCCI to make sure she is alright, make her more comfortable if need be....you know...a cushion to rest her knee on etc.

Yes I realise it could have been much more serious and yes it will make things a little difficult to enjoy excursions etc.But a lawsuit? tsk tsk

Until I speak to mum,I wont know how badly damaged her knee is,hopefully some rest and she will be fine. They hadn't even left Barcelona,(it was about seven hours before leaving port) when it happened !!

Och parents you can't take them anywhere these days ....without having to go back and apologise....oh maybe it is children they say that about ....or dogs....och well.

Oh heck I was going to say there....I am sure they will have a swell time but oops not appropriate saying :D

Cheers guys and gals for your kind thoughts

Liz

So sorry your Mum took a tumble & hope she feels better soon.

Just to let you know my experience on the Brilliance!

We did the transatlantic inaugural sailing from Harwich(UK) to Boston, which by the way was fantastic!

One night after dinner we went up to the disco bar, whilst having a drink at the bar my husband mentioned that he could see a ship in the distance so me being nosey decided to go & have a closer look out of the windown! whilst going down the steps the ship lurched a bit (going through the end of a hurricane) and I lost my footing, the problem was as it was a brand new ship the metal strip on the steps was razor sharp! I cut my heel very deeply and was bleeding all over the place, the barmaid got me lots of serviettes to mop up the blood and also a plaster to cover the wound!

It wasn't till the next morning I realized how bad the wound was so went to the Doc's where he cleaned & stiched it up, we insisted on an accident report be completed at the time, funny enough when we went up to the disco area later on that morning to read a book in peace! we noticed that the handymen & foreman were looking at the step, next thing we saw was a handyman grinding the step down, we made sure we noted all this down!

For the remainder of the cruise we constantly kept on at the Senior Administrator for a copy of the Accident Report, we never did receive it!

On arriving home to the UK we contacted Royal Carribean in Miami, eventually they agreed they were at fault (without prejudice) and compensated me with a $1000 voucher, which we are using towards a cruise around the Caribbean in November.

My advice to you is to try & get a copy of the Accident Report whilst you are still on ship, request a meeting with the Senior Administrator if no luck, pursue the accident when you get home and then write to RCCL with your complaint......did you take any photos at the time! if not make sure you take photos of Mum's injurys.

Please don't let it spoil your cruise (it spoilt my holiday as when we got to Boston I had to buy a pair of backless shoes as could not wear normal shoes....this was the case for 6 months!)

The Brilliance is a fantastic ship & we hold some great memories from her...give her a X from me.

Meanwhile enjoy the rest of your holiday

God speed

SO sorry about your Mum! Hope she is alright and enjoying her cruise! Last month on the Navigator, my mother slipped 3 times in the first hour we were on the ship! She's 76. Luckily, I caught her the first time, second time she caught herself with the handrail, third time she ended up on her knees (and the plate of cookies she was carrying went flying), but was just a little bruised. From that point on, she didn't walk anywhere without me or a handrail to hold on to!

Got text today from mum(I made mistake today is Livirno not sea day),she feels alot better today within herself.

She went to the Doctor-different one on duty today...was told will take about 8 days to clear bruising, tendon and muscle will be sore for few days.

And tonights itinerary was.....food....bingo....show....casino....No Dancing.

Last nights text before leaving Villefranche was.......food good.....great company.

Maybe they will enjoy this cruise after all.

Well just had text to say,mum and Ray have had to be moved into other cabin as theirs had blocked toilet and bad drains !!!!

What a way to celebrate his 75th birthday,my poor stepfather.....he hates packing his case at the best of times....that is why they usually have 12/14 night cruises so they dont have to worry about luggage too often.....och well...will get more news tomorrow whe mum uses her 10minutes voucher for the internet.
