We will be in Nola the 2nd week of Jan. The Mardi Gras web site I've been reading says Carnival/Mardi Gras starts Jan 6th. but I can't seem to find out when parades actually start. Are there parades in Jan? Thanks

January 6th is the official start of the Mardi Gras season. Fat Tuesday '09 (Mardi Gras day) is February 24th.(It varies) The parades, generally, are during the two weeks leading up to and include Mardi Gras day. I don't imagine that there will be any parades while you are there.

Thanks for that schedule - I will be getting off the Norwegian Spirit on Feb 15, 2009 and need to get from the pier to the Amtrak station - train leaves at 1:45 PM - had hoped to do a little more sightseeing before heading to the train station - are the roads likely to clogged and travel hard between the two destinations.

Cheers

Dennis

you should not have any problems getting to the train terminal. It is not that far from the river. The only parade that weekend is Phunny Phorty Phellows .

This is not a traditional parade. It is more like a bunch of men drunk on a streetcar. It kinda starts the carnival season off but it has no floats. The men just get on a streetcar and drink and throw beads. It won't come near where you will be. It is kinda fun to go to though.

Would you recommend walking from the pier to Amtrak in the daytime. I will have only one suitcase and my backpack so that part won't be a concern.

I depends on how much of a walker you are. The walk is not quite a mile, through the CBD (Central Business District), which is considered pretty safe during the day. If I didn't have luggage I'd do it and if you don't mind that long of a walk with suitcase it shouldn't be a problem.
