Andy C Posted June 23, 2008 #1 Posted June 23, 2008 I booked a guarantee balcony. The very next day I was assigned a D1 toward the aft. I'm curious to see if any of you have had any luck in getting a guarantee changed either yourself or by TA? If so, how did you do it? I want to be midship and am not too thrilled with being in the back. P.S. I know, I know it is a guarantee and it would not be a "guarantee" if anyone could change it - but that is NOT my question.
Sue L Posted June 23, 2008 #2 Posted June 23, 2008 Who did you book through? Either call them directly or ask your TA to call, but be prepared for the answer " if you wanted a specific area you should have booked it" You might luck out so it can't hurt to try.
cb at sea Posted June 23, 2008 #3 Posted June 23, 2008 If they have the same catagory available elsewhere, they probably will switch you. But--this is the reason a GTY is cheaper! It's a gamble!

I've booked guaranteed staterooms in the past and once I'm assigned a specific room I immediately switch it to the stateroom I want. Of course you'll have to remain in the same category to not incur any additional charges. I've never had any problem doing this.

Same here Kewlguy.......Just keep calling CSR until you get one to make the switch. I think they do it just to make you happy and hope you will book another cruise in the future. Most likely only a handful call and ask to be switched, just think about how many people don't know you can do this and keep the cabin they were assigned. That's why they don't get mad at you when you call to ask for a switch. Like Kewlguy said though, it must be the exact same Category you were assigned. Jimbo:)
cruisePRN Posted June 23, 2008 #6 Posted June 23, 2008 You could RCL and pay to pick the cabin you want mid ship. Most mid ship cabins are desirable and may be already booked. The ships are so big i don't think you'll feel much motion being off centered.
London Bridge Posted June 23, 2008 #7 Posted June 23, 2008 We did the gaurentee cabin because it was less expensive and most of the ship was already booked. We were first assigned a balcony on the 7th floor forward and for some reason were upgraded to a Junior suite on Deck 9. So in our case we lucked out. By the way I heard the aft is more stable then the front.
simplelife Posted June 23, 2008 #8 Posted June 23, 2008 To all cruisers: A guarantee is just that - a guarantee of the category you booked or (possibly) higher. DO NOT book a guarantee if you can't live with the category you booked OR with anything at a higher category. If you have a preference, book it!! Save the guarantees for those that truly do not have a preference.
amybear912 Posted June 23, 2008 #9 Posted June 23, 2008 I've booked guarantee before and then changed it... I did so because the next category up came down in price and was actually less that what I paid for the guarantee... we could have lived with what we had but if something better is available and price is right... why not try to make the change???? Incidentally, I think someone on here recently reported that when they tried to make a change similar to this that they were then subject to the higher fuel surcharge because that had gone up since their original booking... be careful when making changes seems to be the word on the streets.
Andy C Posted June 23, 2008 Author #10 Posted June 23, 2008 Well my TA really came through! I went from the rear (D1) of the ship on 7th floor to the first hump on 9 floor also a D1. I am ecstatic about my new location.

I am ecstatic about my new location. You may be lucky enough to hang onto that desirable cabin, but there's always the possibility that you could be moved again. When you book a guarantee, you have no claim on a specific cabin, even after one has been assigned to you.
Andy C Posted June 23, 2008 Author #12 Posted June 23, 2008 Interesting. Has anyone had their cabin changed (on a guarantee) after one has been assigned? I've read on here that technically that is a possibility, but come on does it really happen?

Arizona Cruz Chic Posted June 23, 2008 #14 Posted June 23, 2008 This is why we never book a GTY...we book the cabin we want from the get go. ***
lazygal Posted June 23, 2008 #15 Posted June 23, 2008 Don't worry, Andy. That's your cabin and you did the smart thing. Like others have said, once you are assigned a category, you can shop around to see what is available and asked to be moved to an available cabin within the same category. It is easier to do it through RCL, but in your case, your agent came through for you. Well done!
PH8 Posted June 23, 2008 #16 Posted June 23, 2008 I booked a guarantee last month....got assigned a cabin within days.......called to see if I could change(it was all the way up front)......was told no..... I just called back the next day and no problem! Got something better(same category,of course).......... BUT they did tack on the new fuel surcharge amount..........my original booking confirmation says -$80(had a price drop) but when I look at MY CRUISES,says I owe $18..........Im gonna wait and see what happens at the port...........already have my docs......and will be sure to bring that booking confirmation with the new cabin number and the -$80 balance on it.

Bonnielass Posted June 23, 2008 #18 Posted June 23, 2008 Wow, a guarantee is a guarantee. I have been assisgned a guarantee cabin twice, once i was uncertain and unsure of the cabin, they were aft cabins desk 6 on voyager class ship. Basically i was told tough, lump it. I have just booked my second guarantee and was pleasantly upgraded. It is a gamble, why expect to start swapping and changing, it is a guarantee of a cabin. Some you win, some you lose, but you always end up with at least the cabin category to asked for.

I know people here a going to FLAME me to death BUT... I booked my last cruise through RCCL, guarantee cabin, next day assigned a cabin i did not like. This happened 4 times I just called each time and asked to be put back in the "guarantee status" until I got a room I was happy with..........:D :p FLAME ON........ ;)
lazygal Posted June 23, 2008 #20 Posted June 23, 2008 No one should be flaming anybody. This information should be put in the learn something new everyday category. I prefer the option of booking a guarantee whenever possible. Others should do what they are comfortable with.

I've read on here that technically that is a possibility, but come on does it really happen? It happened to me last month on the Dawn Princess. Of course you're asking about RCL and it happens there too. I took a GTY and took my chances in exchange for a lower cruise fare, which is what you are doing, it's called Gambling.

I do think you are trying to eat your cake (the lower price) and have it, too (your choice of cabins). You've been fortunate that they've allowed it. But the whole point of a guarantee is for people who are willing to accept a less desirable cabin in exchange for a lower fare. Calling repeatedly to have your cabin reassigned gets expensive for the cruise line and I wouldn't blame them if they flagged accounts like this. Not a flame, just an opinion.

The result of people manipulating the system like this often causes changes that adversely affect everyone.................
jms2362 Posted June 24, 2008 #24 Posted June 24, 2008 Whenever we got a guarantee we got a great room. One time we were on the top floor in a Suite-how great that was!
BethV114 Posted June 24, 2008 #25 Posted June 24, 2008 We booked a "W"/Deluxe Stateroom Guarantee last year through our TA. We were not expecting an upgrade beyond a JS, nor did we receive one. However, when our cabin was assigned, we found we'd been assigned one of the JS's on deck six of the Adventure, so we called in and asked to be released back into the guarantee pool. The second assignment wasn't much better, same location one deck up, so we spoke with the TA we had booked our cruise with (the prior change had been made by a "customer service associate" at the travel agency we had booked with, and was not the actual TA we had booked with). Anywho, he's absolutely fantastic and was able to move us into our first choice cabin with no problem. I know, I know, it's not fair, but if everyone else does it, why shouldn't I ask to see if I can, too? (And no, I wouldn't jump off a bridge just because everyone else was doing that!).:D After that cruise, we learned how much we love JS's, so we just went ahead and booked that category, with our first choice cabin for our upcoming Mariner cruise. Of course we check back every day to see if there are any price drops or guarantees. No luck yet, but it's still early.:p
