Misty Fjords

We are on the Serenade in Alaska on June 5 and must have the early dining due to my wife's chemo medication schedule. The itinerary shows that the ship arrives in the Misty Fjords at 6pm and "departs" at 8pm. Does anyone know if we will have time to view the sights after the early meal or will we have to skip the main dining and eat elsewhere that night? Many thanks.

When the ship sails through the fjords it sails through the area. Once it makes it to the end it turns around and saild back out the pass. (that is an over simplification) Also, during that time of year it remains fairly light outside until very late so you should be fine.

If I remember correctly the captain will make announcements durring the passage, but you should still be fine.

I wouldn't worry about missing anything.

The dining room does have windows but make sure that you get a table close enough to them to be able to see. Also what we did was the DW and DD did go to dinner and brought mine back to the room, as I was taking pictures. So you should be able to get dinner delivered to you stateroom (as this was lobster night for us), just ask your waiter or head waiter if this possible. If not there is always the Windjammer...

If you have a balcony, I would order room service and have dinner while you enjoy the scenery. The Misty fjords are very beautiful and something you don't want to miss. If you don't have a balcony, get a window seat in the Windjammer. As previous poster noted, it will still be plenty light enough to see everything.

We have been on the Serenade several times and have been to Alaska three times. You have picked an excellent ship and June is a great time to see Alaska.

Another suggestion: Plan on eating in Chops or Portofino the day you cruise Misty Fjords. Make your dinner reservation for 6 PM and request a table at the window. Make the reservation as soon as you get on board as I'm sure that will be the night most people will want to eat there...don't wait....and make sure they understand you want to be seated next to a window.

Even if you have a table near the window in the main dining room, that doesn't mean you and your wife will be able to sit right next to the window if others get there first! And at the main dining room table it will be hard to watch the scenery while others are trying to converse with you.

We were very lucky to have an aft balcony on our Alaska cruise this Sept so we could see both sides at once. The couple we went with had a side balcony and it was quite breezy while the ship is moving so they came to our balcony to view the Fjords. We had late seating and so we were able to really enjoy the Misty Fjords.

Another suggestion is to eat at the Windjammer that evening and take your meal to one of the tables at the aft of the ship for that evening if you don't want to spend the money for the specialty restaurants.

My suggestions for this area and also anywhere else on the cruise is to make sure that you have a window table.. that way you won't miss anything.

You'll LOVE the cruise.

We will also be on the June 5th Serenade cruise. Carolyn, how do I make sure we have a window table? I'm guessing I should check in with the maitre d' when we first get on board? I requested a large table because, since it's just my teenage son and I, I thought it might be a nice way to meet other passengers. Thanks!

Tom, there is a Meet & Mingle thread started for the 6/5/05 cruise. It would be great if there were enough of us for a M&M!

I too was concerned about the fact that I had scheduled early seating. When I was on Jewel this past September we had early seating at 6:00 pm as well, and of the 7 nights we only finished dinner 2 times before 8:00 pm. I guess that means if we don't do the speciality restaurant or eat in the Windjammer, we would miss much of it eating in the dining room.

Is this night always Lobster night? Can you get Lobster up in the Windjammer?

If you stop in Ketchikan, think about a sea plane tour of Misty Fjords... you see so much more of this spectacular place than the ship can ever see (it's too big)...I used Michelle's Island Wings service.. superb.

Pictures are on my webshots link below.
