glgolfer Posted January 29, 2009 Author #526 Share Posted January 29, 2009 Nothing special happened at the Horn. No certificates or anything else. In the harbor at Usuhaia now. Judy got off with the penguin pricate tour. Told her to take lots of pictures. A little rainy and chilly. I'll post more when they get back. FunCruiser56 Posted January 29, 2009 #527 Share Posted January 29, 2009 I just checked the kroooz cams website and it shows Mariner sitting in the port. Hope they adjust the camera to get a better shot. Glad to hear you had smooth sailing around the Horn. Wish I was onboard right now! Bev

Sorry to hear the weather is not Florida standards today.:D Rainy would be a bit tough with the cooler weather way down south. Too bad they didn't give out a certificate. Not that many folks cruise around the horn. Have fun!!!

glgolfer Posted January 30, 2009 Author #530 Share Posted January 30, 2009 Lots of penguin pictures yesterday and glaciers last night. Judy didn't get rained on. It quit just before she got to the penguins and again before she got downtown for shopping. Will take pics today and tomorrow. Looking forward to the fjords to see how they compare to Norway. People are saving money as the casino is shut dow when we are in Chilean waters. Passed 7800 NM at 0824 our time this morning.
Sarvowinner Posted January 30, 2009 #531 Share Posted January 30, 2009 Hi Paul Just peeking in from Sydney to see how you & Judy & the rest of the Hornblowers are doing. How long will the casino be closed? We had a great time in Rio and the Iguasso Falls beat both Niagara & Victoria. Caught up with Beryl, Caitlin & Norma in BA for a couple of days. Kept running across Bill & Sam, Carol and lots of other Hornblowers. The day after you sailed (I watched the Mariner leave from the Sofitel - our room was on the 18th floor and I have a picture attached ), I headed over to the markets at San Telmo for the antique markets. It's such a cute area, I brought Tony back for dinner. The square that was filled with stalls during the day, had tables & chairs and lots of people -all sizes & ages tango dancing. It was magic. No tourists, just locals enjoying themselves. We flew out to Sydney on Qantas and were surprised & delighted to find we had been upgraded to Business. Going through immigration, we were asked where we had visited in South America in the past six days. We told him, Rio, Iguasso & Buenos Aires but that we had our yellow fever shots. He said we didn't need tham as Iguasso & the remainder aren't in the YF zone. It's been very steamy & hot in Sydney. The dogs were happy to see us but are missing the grandchildren of our housesitters who had a family reunion here over the Christmas holidays. Without Caitlin, it's quite quiet. We are missing all the hornblowers and am sure we will meet again. Tony is definitely sold on cruising.

scapel Posted January 30, 2009 #533 Share Posted January 30, 2009 Paul, Tell everyone to be careful in Arica. You are scheduled Friday Feb. 6. I was on the Cruise where 12 passengers were killed on a tour. It was not a ship's tour. There were 16 passengers in a van and 12 were killed. They were coming down the mountain and it happened in devil's curve wherever that is. The driver, guide and two husbands survived.

Thanks for the words to the wise on this Joe....about a month after that happened, we cruised with the sister of one of the passengers on that bus. She said it was a horrific accident and RC really bent over back wards to help them. Anything can happen anywhere! ***

Papa T Posted January 31, 2009 #536 Share Posted January 31, 2009 Looking forward to joining Mariner on Feb. 3 - what are they doing for diamond members from 5 to 8:30 pm each day. On Voyager (Barcelona to Galveston) in December they opened the large lounge in front of deck 5 complete with a band and ample bar people circulating and taking orders. They had 500+ diamond members on board for that cruise. I'm hoping Mariner will do the same thing???:)

darkauf Posted January 31, 2009 #538 Share Posted January 31, 2009 Yes, My sister and brother-in-law were on the bus that went over the mountainside in Arica, Chile. They were less then an hour from the ship. All the other excursions returned but this one didn't. My brother-in-law's cousin was one of the 4 survivors. Two passengers, the travel guide and the bus driver were the only ones to survive the crash. Linda, thanks for remembering about my sister and her husband. It will be 3 years in March. We have friends on the Mariner. She sends emails every day so we have been virtually been traveling with everyone. Darlene & Larry

darkauf Posted January 31, 2009 #542 Share Posted January 31, 2009 Thanks Mary - hope your hand is feeling better. I have severe tendinitis in both of my thumbs. I am suppose to wear stuff on my hands every day but they interfere with my typing. BTW Mary, my sister had chosen the Millennium cruise over the Radiance cruise to Hawaii which is the one we took and that is where we met Brenda and Allen for the first time. Choices we make in life. Have you tried the golf simulator on board? The Voyager class sims tend to be pretty good but the Freedom Class sims are cheaper and unimpressive. glgolfer Posted January 31, 2009 Author #545 Share Posted January 31, 2009 Have not tried the sims on any ship. I had a happy birthday today. First I hit a penny slot for $300+ and then hit a quarter slot with a 7 - 12X -12X for $3600. It was a good birthday. Smooth waters and mostly sunny today. Sea day tomorrow and then the last day of the 2nd leg in Valparaiso. it's going much too fast.

sea-cruise Posted February 1, 2009 #547 Share Posted February 1, 2009 Thanks Mary - hope your hand is feeling better. Thankfully, only 6 more days til the cast comes off. It feels too tight and is making me crazy. BTW Mary, my sister had chosen the Millennium cruise over the Radiance cruise to Hawaii which is the one we took and that is where we met Brenda and Allen for the first time. Choices we make in life. Oh my gosh! You're right...choices taken at forks in the road determine our lives. See you tomorrow on our B&A board. Have a good night.
