Live from the Radiance....watch us go through the Panama Canal tomorrow (Friday, 4/23/04)

Recommended Posts

Good evening everyone from aboard the beautiful Radiance. We will be going through the canal tomorrow. You can watch us on pancanal.com. We should start through the first set of locks around 7:30 am Central time and pass through the last lock around 3:30 tomorrow afternoon.

We have had "a weather front" that has kept it overcast most of the week but no big storms. The entertainment has been good. The food is very good. The cabin service is excellent.

Will report more as we proceed through trip and much more when we return.

How does the ship look? What room are you staying in? What are the productions shows and the headliners? How's the food? What night would be good to book Chops? We will be on her on the 2nd for our 3rd time. We just love her. Thanks for the info.

Janet

Janet...The ship is still in good shape. She is still beautiful to us. You can see a little wear but as usual....they are out painting where it needs it and varnishing handrails, etc. We have felt for the last several years that the food quality has gone done (due to pricing) but I must say our food has been excellent all week. I have only heard one person "complain" and that was because their steak was not cooked the way they liked it. Most everyone has actually been complimenting the food. As far as headliners...we had Burt Leigh last night. We had Steven Scott, Mario D'Andrea, and a violinist from the U.K.. Tonight is the first production show and it is "Welcome to Our World". I'm sure you have probably seen it before. We haven't booked Chops or Portofinos yet. We usually try to figure out what night we will be "less than pleased" with dining room selections and then try to book that night. But so far there has been something on the dining room menu that we wanted to go there for every night. As always, the Radiance staff is awesome. Our dining staff is great, our cabin steward is wonderful, bar service is good, concierge is excellent. We are very pleased. Sounds like you are getting on when we are getting off. There are 200 passengers on board now that are continuing up the coast to Canada. I hope I answered all of your questions. Enjoy your cruise.

Hi Janet,

I just came back Sunday from a week on the Radiance. The ship is in excellent shape. She is just beautiful. I loved it. The entertainment was ok, the show reviews (with the entire troupe) were fair at best...but since I work in NYC and go to NY shows, I am a tough critic !! We also saw the juggler/comedian. He was good. The food was good to very good. Oh, the VanDells were there, for one night, very good show. I enjoyed 6/7 nights of my dinners very much. Our waiter and room steward were excellent !! Replied quickly to our every request. We couldn't have asked for more from either one. Erkan was the waiter, and Patricia our room steward.

I hope you have as wonderful a time as we did....

Denise

Thanks for all the info. We are going to be in room 8084, next to the bump and I'm not sure what the view will be. It's interesting, we have had cabins 8574 & 8622 (both assigned on a GTY) and this is the first time we have been near a bump. How many years does RCCL keep the same production show? Seeing it twice is OK, three times I think we'll find something else. The first time we sailed the Radiance was less than a month old and it was right after 9/11(I think it was 9/15). The show did improve the next time I saw it and the kids do work hard.

Skiiergirl, What movies are in the Movie Theater this week? I really would love to take the cruise you are on and go through the canal. Have a great time and thanks for answering my questions.

I haven't done any movies this trip but what I remember listed in the compass have been....Brue Almighty, Star Trek, Lord of the Rings, The Inlaws, Master and Commander, Cheaper by the Dozen and a few others. This is a great trip. I hope you can do it some day.

My good friend's sister passed through the Canal on her cruise this week also. She was up on deck waving a red shirt and my friend has two pictures of her sister up on the deck as they were passing through. She copied them off of the web site. What cool pictures to have to put in your scrapbook.

We live at Ellsworth & Baseline in Augusta Ranch, not to far by the freeway. We are taking a repositional cruise on May 2nd, a 6 night San Diego to Vancouver for our anniversary. It was a great price, less than $100pp a night for an E-2 Balcony. What room were you in? We really love the Radiance Class Ships.

woodz...Happy Anniversary! On the Radiance we had a standard outside cabin # 3132, On the Brillinace we were in 8114 it too was an E 2. It had the life boat overhang, next time I'll go for an E 1 or higher on the Radiance class ships.

You got a good rate, now I'm the one who is Jealous. Jealous. Jealous! When we did the Radiance last Oct. out of San Diego it was awesome to see the ship arrive and dock. It looked like it was never going to stop and end up in the middle of downtwon San Diego!

Have a great cruise!

Woodz....You will have a great time. We usually do deck 8 on the hump but are on deck 10 toward the back this time. We love the hump. From what I am hearing, people might get some nice upgrades on the 5/2 trip as I am hearing that the ship is only about 1/2 full. There are over 200 Canadians on this trip continuing on the 5/2 trip also.

We have had a great day in Costa Rica today! We head out in a few hours for Huatulco.

Have a great evening everyone!

Hi skiiergirl,

I'm glad you’re enjoying the Radiance. Like justcruzing85374 I was on the last Panama Canal crossing of Radiance and I loved it.

I hope you’ll have as much fun there know as we had last time.

I would change with you in a minute and the chance of going with her up to Vancouver – I would do these two cruises in a heartbeat. Well maybe next time.

BTW: You mentioned you are on Deck 10 aft - do you get any noise from the windjammer?

Hello fellow RAD-Rowdy and my congratulations to your big win! If you don't need the money right now, just send it to me - I'll find a way to spend it icon_biggrin.gif

Can you do me a favour and do a short comparison between Radiance and Brilliance?

I'll do you the favour to compare Jewel with the Radiance ! (only 8 hours till we leave icon_cool.gif)

What do you mean when you say that the dining room and stateroom attendants were not up to par? Was it because of the new system on Brilliance or was it a problem of the crew or a problem because of the RCCL cutbacks? Are the cutbacks really that obvious ?(it's only 6 months since our Radiance cruise)

Radiance was the fist of its class-is Brilliance really more worn out than Radiance?

Thanks and all the best to you

Michael

We were on the Radiance also the week of the April 11th to the 18th.What a great ship! We were in room 9060, and although the room was small, it was just fine for me, my wife, and 17 year old daughter.

Man, I am going through some serious cruise withdrawl. We had a wonderful time, and met some great people from Chicago and Ohio.We are looking to book something special for next Easter break. My daughter will be a senior, and it will probably be our last cruise together for a little while. Any questions, will be glad to answer them.

Hello GW....How great to hear from you, missed seeing you on the boards! I hope you get to see this in time before you leave.

As for any comparison on Radiance to Brilliance, they are exactly the same except for the art work. It was nice to "know my way around" while everyone else way stumbling to find their way icon_wink.gif We did help out some people on the first day and they sure appreiciated it.

We did see a difference in service and friendliness of the crew since the Radiance in October. I think it was due to the new scheduling in effect. The cabin attendants had assistants and about 30 some cabins assigned to them, they were definitly overworked. Same in the D.R. the assistant had an extra table working with 2 different waiters, so his or her job was more involved. Most nights we did not get offered more breads and coffee/water glasses were empty a long time. The waiter ended up doing most of the assistants jobs, our waiter did an outstanding job, but her hands were definity full with a demanding passenger or two. We dined in the windjammer 2 or 3 nights and Chops another night. We heard from our table mates those nights they had very good service, no doubt, less people to serve! All in all it was a great cruise and had a great time. We would definitly go again, if I had to decide between the Radiance and the Brilliance, I would choose the Radiance.

Thanks for the offer to help take care of my big Bingo winnings.....we are saving it for another cruise but I need to take care of some health issues first.

I wish you the best cruise ever and can't wait to hear all about the Jewel and her first sailing, I'll be looking for your review.

Have a great time, I jealous! icon_biggrin.gif

Hi justcruzin

only 30 minutes till we leave for the train station. Thought because of the time difference that someone might have replied.

Sorry to hear about your health problems. Hope you get well asap.

Sorry about Brilliance as well. But like someone here on the board has in his/her signature: A bad day on sea is better than a good day at work!

I'll keep you posted about our experience on Jewel. Hope that it's only an issue on Brilliance but I have my doubts about it. Too many cost reducing things going on right now.

I tried hard to get the tape but still no reply from RCL’s Miami headquarters. I think I’ll have to be patient.

CU in 2 days

Skiiergirl

Thanks so much for keeping us updated on your cruise, so happy that you are having a great time!!

There's alot of us thinking about all of you this past week, we are the "Radiant Rascals", that will be getting on the ship in San Diego. One gal recorded you going thru the canal!

Thanks again for your reports.

skiiergirl,

Ok, now I'm wishing for the up-grade fairy to visit me. Thanks for the info. on room availabily next week. I did a search last night and found out that there are many GS available so I wonder how much it would cost to upgrade. If the ship really does have room for upgrades we might change our flight on Sunday to get into SAN early and check for pier upgrades. I do feel guilty hoping my week goes fast while you are hoping it sloooows down. Have a wonderful time and enjoy Mexico.

Hey Skiiergirl,

Are you having so much fun? What night has been your least favorite in the dining room? We want to reserve Chop when we board. Thanks!
