Coastcruisers Posted November 17, 2004 #1 Share Posted November 17, 2004 Anyone ever stored luggage in Rome prior to cruise? We'd like to spend about ten days pre-cruise travelling on our own, but without cruise luggage which would make train travel far easier. Any recommendations about storing luggage at Rome airport? We've also read about companies that ship luggage overseas so it is at the pier upon arrival. Anyone have information on this service? Thanks . . . kitty9 Posted November 17, 2004 #2 Share Posted November 17, 2004 Just like there are no luggage storage facilities at any US airport because of security concerns, there's not any place to store luggage at the Rome airport. I honestly cannot think of anywhere you can store your bags when you're going to be moving around the country. But, there might be one solution. You can ship your bags to Italy, if you have a hotel where you'll be staying for a couple of days before you board the ship. For instance, you fly into Rome and then take the train all over the country for a few days, and then finally get back to Rome and do the tourist thing in that city for a few days. You could ship your bags, via Fed Ex, to the hotel in Rome. If you ship your bags on the day before you leave, they should make it to Rome in 6 or 7 days, which means they'll be waiting for you at the hotel. Just make sure you clear this with the hotel before doing this. As for shipping to the pier, it all depends on the cruise line. RCCI, Celebrity, NCL do not allow any passenger to ship their bags. Crystal, Cunard, Seabourn and Silversea all have shipping services.

StephenJohnson Posted November 19, 2004 #4 Share Posted November 19, 2004 When we did this, we just culled our luggage down to what we could drag around with us - we spent 6 nights in three cities pre-cruise with no ill effects. You might be able to ditch a suitcase at a hotel if you were staying there first & last nights. All railway stations have baggage checks, but those are typically day-only, IIRC. I managed to break my suitcase handle in Naples (Grrr...but it was my own stupid fault) - but we still did OK, and I still had a tux for formal nights.
