Question about DCL Atlantis Dig Excursion

I am wondering about the excursion on Disney Cruise Line where you are provided transportation to Atlantis and you get tickets to the dig.

Has anyone done this excursion before?

Is it worth paying the $52 per adult/ $35 per child?

We want to be able to see Atlantis, look around the grounds, go to the aquarium and possibly stop in at the casino.

Is this the best excursion to do this?

We do not care about using the beach or waterslides since we do not want the expense assoicated with it and we want to save our time in the sun and water for Castaway Cay. (We are traveling with my parents who will not be able to stand long periods of sun on multiple days)

We will also have my two boys ages 8 and 5 with us. Will there be something else to look at or keep us occupyed while my Dad stops in at the casino. He wouldn't be staying long but would like to check it out and look at it. I realize obviously I can't bring the kids in there!

I am wondering how much of the grounds will we be able to see without the water wristbands?

What is the transportation like for this excursion? Is it clean, safe, etc.? Also, what time does this excursion depart and how often is there a chance to get back if we are ready to head back to the ship?

Any info on the above would be SO appreciated!

Also, anyone ever take their kids to Atlantis and say "No waterslides this time" ? How did that go over? :p We have Castaway Cay the next day and we also are doing 7 days of WDW after our cruise so we don't want to do the added price and exhaustion of the complete Atlantis experience this time but we would like to check it out.

i can only tell you about our experience, it has changed some since then.

Now they drive you on a bus to Atlantis. They use to use a water taxi and you had to walk quite aways.

Now your dropped off close to the door.

Once there you get a wrist band for your tour and are grouped to go. The tour goes quite fast but afterwards we were told we could go back through at our own speed as long as we showed the wrist bands.

I dont usually like aquariums but this was a great one and well worth seeing. Very easy viewing for the kids. You are also taken outside on the tour for fish viewing outside. There are a few stairs outside, so if you have a stroller, use one that collaspes easily for you.

Then we were told we could just go back an catch the boat back every 30 minutes until 4 p.m.. So we had time to explore. I believe it is the same now accept you take a bus.

While adults are in the casino you can take the kids back through the aquarium again when they arnt rushed and there are some awesome HUGE art work statues all over you can go and see and take photos of the kids beside them. Plus sit down and have a snack with them for a few minutes.

Just to the side of the aquarium entrance there is a huge glass window with lots of fish in it to look at too. The shops are very expensive and nothing the kids would care about but you can entertain them for quite awhile when the adults gamble.

If they want to stay longer there are always taxis at the hotel to take you back to the ship too. Just be back before the all aboard time.

Yes the transportation is safe and clean. I feel it was worth the price when we went. You wont really save anything if you pay for a taxi to take you all there and back and pay for the aquairium separately. Not enough to bother with anyway.

Its just easier to book through DCL so you can relax and enjoy Atlantis.

That was pretty much my take on it also. You meet at the time you set your tour for. There will be a bus pick to you up at the security bldg, and take you to Atlantis. Once you take the guided tour, there is no rush to go back to the ship, so you can stay and explore till you ready to leave.I think the last bus is 4 pm. After that there are taxis to take you back.I think the tour is worth the money, after all you see and experience.

Thanks to both of you for responding and thanks to others who might have input as well!

momx4grx4 especially thank you for all your posts. You have helped me plan both of my DCL cruises! You are a staple on here and we appreciate it!

My friend even asked me once I wonder what momx4grandmax4 would say about this...? :D

Thanks Again!

Thankyou, it's nice to know i helped someone with their cruise planning.

We all look for something different in our vacations so sometimes I almost hate to say yes this was fun because they may not like that type of entertainment. But I figure they know it is just my opinion.

When you get back please let us know what you decided to do and how you liked it. I love the HUGE golden throne to sit on at Atlantis for having your photo taken. I managed to climb up on it but my hubby had to help me get down, I was stuck:D. Be sure and take your camera, there are plenty of photo ops there.

Thanks so much everyone for posting this great information on the Atlantis excursions! We are going on a 4 day cruise in May and I'm trying to decide between the two Atlantis excursions. Do you know about either of them? Thanks in advance!

We have only done the aquarium, not the water slides and pools.

we thought it was extremely well themed and although I am not much on going ot aquariums I loved this one. The tours move fast, but you can go back at your leisure and walk through it again which is what we did.

Part of the tour goes outside and there are some stairs. so if you have a stroller or young kids or someone who has difficulty doing stairs be warned there are a few outside. Not too bad but still you should know that fact.

The viewing windows are large and close enough to the floor tha tyoung kids can easily see inside them.

There is a gift shop in the middle of the tour and it is the only one so if you want something you will have to go back to it to get it.

Near the entrance there is a HUGE viewing window that you can stand and look at the fish if you want. Once your doen with the aquarium take time to walk around the inside of the hotel they have many huge statues and pieces of art that are worth taking photos of. Most cost 1 million dollars. There are a few fun places for photo ops too.

so bring the camera and plan on going through twice and take soem time to explore after wards.

If you plan on eating there it will cost you a lot. even the snack bar area was something like 7 or 8 dollars for a regular burger so best to go there full or bring a snack with you.

We are planning on just doing the Discover Atlantis excursion directly through Disney which in includes the tour and time to walk around. There was one for 11:15 and one for 1:15. We chose the 11:15.

Do we just meet a bus at the end of the dock at 11:15? How close is it to where you get off the boat? (Is it just on the other side of those first buildings or its it somewhere else?)

Do buses come every half hour to pick you back up or would we need to wait until the 1:15 ppl arrive to get the bus back?

How long would you plan on for this excursion?

Thanks!

Some cruise lines have you meet on the dock but DCL is easier than that. when you arrive in your room upon boarding there will be an envelope on the desk with tickets for your excursion. On that ticket will be a place and time ON the ship where you wll meet with your tour group. They give everyone a sticker to put on your shirt too, so everyone will know which group your with. they will walk you out to the bus as a group so nobody gets separated.

It is about a 10 minute ride due to traffic. You can see the hotel from the ship.

The tour took about an hour I think? close to it anyway.

Then we spent 2 hours browsing the hotels architecture and went threw the aquarium again on our own. The tour moves really fast but you can go back on your own if you want.

Not sure how far apart the buses run, when we did it we used the water taxi, that was before they started using the buses. But they will tell you all that before you leave for the cruise at your pre excursion meet. we were gone about 4 hours all together. But we explored everything.

If your only going for the aquarium i would allow a little over an hour. Sometime syou have to wait a few minute before your group can go through. They space you out so it can take longer. If your going to explore the hotel it will be longer. It really is worth browsing around as long as your there. Lots of photo ops there.

If you want to stay beyond the bus schedule there are cabs everywhere, so no problem to get back on your own accept you would have to pay for it.

with the water taxi we had a 4 hour window to go back.
